I'm really hoping I'm not the only one on this board with a growing collection of mugs (or anything Tiki for that matter). I've been collecting/obsessed since senior year of high school about 11 years ago. Let's see those mugs, or anything tiki for that matter.....Polynesian, PNG, Hawaiian, Roratongan, DOLE WHIPS?! ... If it's tropical put it here!

This is a photo of our hutch right now...horrible photo but it's the only one i got. Munktiki, Trader Sam's, Tiki Farm, all kinds of goodies in there including a couple cans of GWAR beer from Gwar-B-Q...

So for my birthday a few weeks ago, my sis copped three boxes of mugs. I guarantee MANY of the folk within the tiki community would find this sacrilegious...However I am a big Star Wars nerd (local 501st member what-what!) so I love these babies. They'll go nicely next to the Munktiki bastard mug.

And to keep this thread rolling on with those sweet sweet dole whip vibes....

I saw a carved Tiki in a thrift shop once, but it was apparently before I realized how cool they are. Suffered quite a lot of regret thinking back on it.

carved wooden tiki are definitely pieces I strive for in the long-run. Unfortunately for now I have no physical space for one of them, however I will definitely have one or four in my future backyard and/or basement hide-away. I would also love to learn how to properly carve idols. The pros always made it look so easy......I mean Crazy Al for cryin' out loud can carve a full tiki in one live band set on stage in front of a live audience. good grief.

    posting strictly for research purposes.

I'm also JUST noticing the similarities of both polynesian idols and modern vinyl "toys". They're the exact same thing to me. Stick em on your shelf or somewhere in your home and worship them in whatever manner you see fit.

Indeed, I bought several of his books about 7 years ago while still in school. Very fun stuff to look at!

Currently looking into and potentially booking our next WDW trip within the next day or two and we may end up staying at the Polynesian, since the Boardwalk's rooms are already waitlisted (for March of next year. YIKES!). Fortunately for my girlfriend and I, we both adore the Polynesian for obvious reasons. Just means more Polynesian and Trader Sam's tiki mugs for our collection! WOOOHOO!

My girlfriend just got a handful of these guys in the mail this week. They're surprisingly teeny-tiny. Shot glass size, if you will.

I just opened up another webbrowser and typed in "google". Then in the google search box, typed in "Ninja Turlte tike". BEFORE I clicked search I went back and corrected it to "Ninja Turtle tiki" Then it led me to another site. I scanned it and read that it was Loot Crate. The process was for finding it was very quick.

I was gonna say, I'm surprised you got anywhere using a word like "Tike" to look up tiki mugs

Also can't wait to finally get my hands on one of these on our upcoming trip in 39 days. <3 <3 <3

Sorry but search engines like google are so critical. If you were interested in a toy...why not take the time to search for it? I don't get it.
If I am into a toy...I wouldn't just post a.."what is that toy"? post and wait for a response. I would either message the person or do a little research. Especially when it's licensed

I'm aware that I could have easily just taken care of that myself but it seemed pretty obvious that Yuck is into Tiki stuff and I thought it would be a better idea to engage him in conversation about these items then just take the antisocial road and look it up on Google. Before I posted that question this thread had 8 posts and 6 belonged to Yuck. Sorry for trying to give this thread a little life.

Given that this is a forum, I'd like to think we'd all rather engage in conversation and the opportunity to share information on things we're excited about. Being an asshole for no reason and recommending a board member go a route that diverts activity on this board is just unnecessary.

The Gremlins mugs, while pretty cool, just look a little too literal in my opinion. It would've been nice to have more Polynesian influence, almost having to study it a bit to notice it's Gremlins.

Mainly I thought the shape was just to flat against the surface. If they'd pulled the ears out a bit, rather than back, I'd enjoy them a lot more. The color and contrast with the glazes also didn't help. The best was red/white, and isn't at all Gremlin colors.

Good call on the ears. Now that they've been brought to my attention, they look a little more like wings than wars.

An acquaintance of mine, Tiki Tony, is apparently in the works designing a new mug for the Hukilau which is pretty exciting. If you haven't seen any of his past works.....here you go:

His "Fatutu" character is one of my favorites.

Edit: Also in response to the back and forth above, don't worry about giving my threads life. I like what I like and I'll just keep posting about it until it rots.

I saw these in person Friday at my local Alamo Drafthouse, and I thought they were pretty eye catching.

I think with ceramics there is just always a big gulf between items that have been designed for mass production, and the results that can be obtained through a more handcrafted approach. That's at least part of the reason why Munktiki's wares are so nice.

How did I not make the connection that you could get me all the cool Mondo stuff I can't get because I'm not in Austin.

I agree, I too collect munktiki's work and realize it's a numbers thing.

Discovered a must-have this morning before work. Two of my favorite things in one! Ancient meso-American culture mixed into an aesthetically pleasing mug. And if you physically count the alcohol that may or may not be in the mug, than that's actually THREE of my favorite things.
