    Saw the 3d trailer.
Have to say I'm getting more and more ready for a let down.
The son looking for father heading towards I assume the cliched son vs. father is disappointing.
Glad to see they are keeping the original "look," but it appearts that its more directed at a new crowd with some campiness thrown in.
Still not sure why 25some odd years later it is being done.
I mean, I will see it in the theater, but most of the people who saw the preview around me were asking "what's tron?"

    Disney bought Pixar in 2006.
Pixar people are running Disney's animation and film business these days.
Maybe it took a Pixar person to run with it whereas Disney people didn't have the technology...

This movie will fail because it will give people headaches.

I guess the obvious and cynical answer would be "$$$" but I'm not sure that works, because for reasons including those you mentioned, it's not a sure bet.

What's cool about the original has a lot to do with what might be called its flaws. It's a truly strange, disjointed and slightly confusing film. It's "good" in a surrealistically entertaining sense (it's almost hard to believe it's a Disney movie) and for many people, nostalgic reasons, but truth be told, it's not a very good movie. I find it sort of hard to sit through, and did in its original release too. However it does have its low-tech high tech charms, and therein lies the problem with a sequel. Given the advances in CG since that time (no longer a novelty,) the "wow' factor will be missing, and what's left to work with is pretty meagre. From the clips released, it looks like its makers are trying to pull off a sort of updated minimalist approach, but that's not where computer games have taken us since the original, and in a post-Avatar milieu, do the masses really want CG minimalism?

I do. I'm really glad that they haven't redone the whole tron world as some crazy avatar ish real life video game looking all image no substance.
I agree the original has its flaws, but I recall being mesmerized by it as a child and still count it as a favorite.
I just assume this may be a "tween" flick that has the look of tron thrown on it, but who knows.
I doubt $ will be an issue b/c the previews def make it look like any other movie teenagers go see, minus the whole glowing suits thing, and as I said a certain camp factor (the white haired guy playing his cane as a guitar?)

I'll rent it out of curiosity.

I tried to rewatch the original a couple years ago and couldn't finish it.

The urban motorcycle scene, the light cycles and music vaguely reminded me of Akira.

I'm just glad to see it has a new story and is not just a remake. I'm tired of remakes(and i'm sure I'm not alone)

That was a widely touted criticism of the original film prior to its release. The idea was that the stark contrasts would hurt people's eyeballs after twenty minutes or so, and poor word of mouth would do the rest.

I personally am looking forward to this movie, after all, the original TRON is a legitimate cult classic. It is to info tech what Star Trek is to everything else. It is firmly rooted in 80's style and design, much like the majority of pop culture is right now. The original is by no means perfect, yet I remain transfixed by it after dozens of viewings. From what I'm seeing TR2N is looking like a love letter to my childhood fantasies, timed just right for everyone else.

It looks fun. ANY storyline they could possibly use would be cliche unless they got obscure and not in a good way but in a "trying too hard way." I think it'll be fun, I'm keeping my hope there. Because even if the plot sucks, it'll be visually fun.

Looking forward to seeing the movie. Not too worried whether it blows my socks off . . . it's not life or death and I'm willing to risk 90 minutes! ;)

That was kind of my point with the "camp."
And not in a good way.

I have to say that every time I watch TRON I'm surprised at how good it is. For the era and genre I feel it has a very strong story. Some of the acting - particularly the lady's - wasn't great, but that's par for the course given the era/genre.
There are a lot of movies from my childhood that I remember liking and then being disappointed when I re-watch them as an adult. TRON is not one of them.

I think the scene lit by neon through Venetian blinds is the most "80s thing about the original. :D

If you read up on the production of the first TRON it's pretty surreal how it was made. Frame by frame rendering that would take days from coast to coast? Yikes! So at the time it was made it was a technical novelty. The film is really one of the most soulless and draining things I have ever seen and I did see it in a theater when it came out. Granted it was at a local discount theater at the end of the run, but the theater was packed. Because honestly what I remember the most about TRON is how everyone I know wanted to see it, but nobody wanted to pay full price to see it.

That said this re-imagining could be better than one would expect. But what I want to know is are they hoping on creating a new franchise? It's the only explanation for this coming back and having the teenage son show up. What's next? "Tron: Twilight?"

Disney is also going to make a TV series out of this, BTW.

I can't wait for this to come out. I'm a fan of the first one, and this follow-up looks great.

I was going to post about this updated trailer, but I figured I'd get yelled at for linking to yet another trailer. :)
