Would be great if Ultraman Ace is remastered for future release. My bootleg copy looks like it was filmed on a calculator.

They'll be releasing the blu-ray so it's coming!
Things I'm stoked for: an entire season of an Ultra show in high def for $40!! Series I've never seen full episodes of! And subtitles!
I swear to god I am going to purchase every single series... well maybe not Nexus.

If you’re yet to see Leo it comes recommended. Despite butchering Ultraseven’s character, Leo is really it’s own beast: alternating between kung fu against kaiju action, kiddy episodes and completely left field nihilistic dark and violent episodes.

Funny you should mention Nexus as despite its high praise by fans, I dropped it a few episodes before the end and never attempted to finish it. Sure it tried something different with the formula but it failed IMO.

Yeah Nexus seems to be completely polarizing; people either love it or hate it. And I stormed through Leo on Crunchyroll a couple years back and could not believe how fucking wild it is. It quickly became one of my favorite Showa Ultraman series. I've not seen Taro, and only seen a few episodes of Jack, Ace, and The Ultraman animated series. Of the Heisei series Mebius and Orb are my favorites. So far Taiga is really strong and I feel it's the strongest series since 2016's Orb.

And yeah Seven was a horrific dick in Leo, but they seemed to freeze that as his style from then on as the overly harsh sensei, which makes sense later on when Zero comes along as the super cocky loner since Seven would probably be the overly tough dad trope to him.

Anybody keep up with Max? I've tended to avoid Ultra shows post 80, but on the strength of a couple of reviews, and the mention that it got pretty nuts thanks to the occasional presence of such folk as Takashi Miike, I decided to give it a go. I got bored and moved on before any notable subversions took place on screen. I guess maybe I should just go back and cherry pick some episodes? At the time I decided that I wasn't allowed to skip ahead.

Mill Creek, eh? Perhaps we'll be pleasantly surprised.

Watch the Miike episode of Maxx because it is definitely fucking nuts and really funny.

Miike directs two episodes I believe. Maxx is an important series to cherry pick episodes from due to it also featuring Akio Jissoji’s strangest episode in the entire franchise as well as throwback homage episodes featuring the original Ultraman cast + kaiju. Overall though? It suffers from the normal issues you may find with other Heisei outings if they aren’t your thing.

I have not yet been able to get into any of the Heisei stuff either myself. I am sure it is great entertainment, and wonderful for the younger generation, but it just never connected to me in the same way as Tsuburaya's stylings and rubber suited monster-of-the-week adventures. I am not so naive as to dismiss the nostalgia component, but it is also just personal preferences (same with anime). [And I would say this applies equally to all modern reworkings of tokusatsu stuff.] I might have to check out this Miike episode now though from these recommendations.

Yeah, CGI in heisei Ultraman is unacceptable to me personally.

Let me re-emphasise that there are TWO Miike episodes which are great but the Jissoji episodes are superior. You owe it to Jissoji because he wrote and directed the greatest and most thought provoking episodes in both Ultraman and Ultraseven.

Agreed; doing The Targeted Town in Seven, which is one of the best Ultra episodes made, and then doing the follow up episode The Untargeted Town in Max which was absolutely amazing.

Thats really great news! I've never heard of Indigo Entertainment, who i assume are doing the R2 releases. Hope they do a good job because i'm buying these bad boys. Well, the original series anyway.

I finally clicked the link about the releases. I have never heard of indigo either, and amazon uk has no information about r2 pre-orders... So is it that a UK company is just helping mill creek with the US releases? If so why make a point about their nationality...

Nice to hear the recommendations everyone on the newer stuff, will need to do research!

Ah, i see what you mean. Indigo are described as a distribution company, so i assumed that meant they would be handling the release in the UK.

Edit: Actually thinking about it, i would of thought the demand for Ultraman in the UK would be minimal so i have a nasty feeling this is only R1 release. :(

I am kind of wary of this too. R2 sees so little love for these sorts of things. Even monster films, as I believe I brought up in another discussion, can be found on Amazon Italy, Spain, Germany, France, etc. But try to find these in English versions of R2 - forget it. I think, this is total guesswork, that what probably happens is a company like Mill Creek secures right to the English language releases of a film/show. Then, being US-centric (sigh!) they only ever concern themselves with pressing R1 discs. I mean, further to this, one thing that always irks me is how a foreign film will be released by all these countries but with only one (or two) language tracks. This is another thing which leads me to believe in this hypothesis, of language licenses versus regional licenses. Think about it, if one company pressing DVDs/BDs has the original footage, and all these subs exist (poor or not), as we know they do, then WHY don't they just press one DVD with English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Danish, Swedish, etc., etc., etc., sub tracks as options. I am pretty sure this used to be way more common than even the rarity it is now. I guess I notice it more having moved all over this world, and am constantly trying to source watchable media. :| Anyways, end rant as I could go on forever. Suffice it to say, frustration!

And yes, fingers crossed viewers outside the US won't be ignored.

    Dept of Cherry Picking:

I went ahead and uploaded a pack of all of the subbed Akio Jissoji Ultrastuff that I had in my archive. If you want to have a Showa film festival at home, shoot me a PM for a link. The only Heisei era stiff that I had was from Max, so I included his and Miike's eps from that run, too.

If you want to go full Heisei, you can check out these 3 pre-Max eps as well:
I didn't have a source for his Ultra Q: Dark Fantasy work, also pre-Max, but I know it's out there somewhere in subbed form.

Just as an aside; for Region 2/B for blu-ray playback of Region 1/A disks there are always inexpensive players out there. Of course then there is import fee hikes etc for the disks themselves ugh. But at least it's not a totally lost cause, especially since the disks seem to be (so far) $40usd for a season as opposed to ~$400usd per season from Japan. If you have Amazon Prime you can link a USA account to it with a separate email address and shipping would be cheaper as well. At least that's how it works for me when I use UK and Japan Amazon for the States.

I always bought hackable DVD players way back when; universal joy was just a code or two away. Not so with blu machines?

Many people also have small PCs as dedicated media machines hooked up to their TVs as well, and I know that VLC will do region-free pass throughs.

Champion! Thank you for the lovely cherry picking. Can’t wait to delve into these episodes I haven’t seen.

^ Which eps/series were you able to check out. Neil?

These previews from Mill Creek are looking pretty foxy, I'll admit:

October 15th release for both sets, and the pre-order pricing via the usual channels is bonkers cheap.

Serious question: What's a SteelBook and why should I care?

This is very good news, thank you for sharing it. You should maybe have a look at their Goji picture.

I tried to focus on the older stuff.
The one I can remember right now, there’s a guy in a lizard suit crawling around in the water.
    So fun.

I watched the Miike ones as well.
They were cool, but nothing like the old stuff.

I love the old ones, the way they production and art direction solve problems.

The suits and editing is inspiring.

Makes me feel like I’m a kid again!

    Thanks for the hook up!
