Yeah, I know the show is completely fake but I still enjoy watching it. On tonight's episode Darrell Sheets find a near mint giant Marusan original kaiju in an abandoned locker.
Yeah, I haven't watched the show in ages (mostly repeats these days), but I threw this on while paying bills. I happened to look up and catch him at the store seeking advice. Pretty cool find. Hit the record button so I could rewind and see the initial reveal.
Don't remember the name of the shop, but the first thing the owner did was smell the vinyl. He also found a mini Bullmark Geronimon.
The actually valued them correctly: the mini at about $45 and the giant around $1000 (although recent YJA auction results for giant Marusan originals may put that one about twice that.)
Here's the clip: http://on.aol.com/video/storage-wars--d ... -517772672 Notable quotes that had me laughing: "The SAN toy company", and "When I'm good I'm more than good"- what does that even mean? Can't believe these asshats found something like that.
Ha, what a bunch of weirdos. It is so funny to me how these 'reality' shows, as fake as they are, get people like this to be on them. I guess being a moron is the appeal to the audience, but then, what kind of person goes on television to be that person. Can't watch the clip in Canada, but I am sure I am not missing anything. Pity they had to resort to pulling out a giant Marusan though. They probably have producers doing regular ebay/internet searches for high ticket unusual items, which they can feature....I mean find... on the show.
^^^ This episode was on A&E last night and I was watching it on Shaw in Vancouver, so it's likely to be repeated next week or whenever the next new episode is shown. Pretty sure you can catch watch it then. Also, look into a DNS plugin for your browser that makes this kinda nonsense like 'oh, you're not merican? cant watch this!' go away. On a different note, I love these characters for the cheezy funterntainment I get out of them. Darrell's lines are so well scripted too. Much like that Japanese game show Takehashi's Castle or MXC. Probably the same writers crafting these gems. And Barry's a hoot as well, I don't care what anybody says. Plus, he's got those funky vehicles. But. I am suspecting these unique gems they find are tossed in there by the production assistants just to go and see these unique shops where the expert opinions are given. This would mean tho that somewhere along the line of these masters of reality, there's a kaiju collector who obviously new the value of that Marusan piece. I recall seeing Coop's original art in one of these 'find'-s in a locker, so..
I've read a few places that that's exactly what the producers of Storage Wars (and similar reality shows) do - they plant unique and valuable items in the lockers beforehand though the people bidding on them don't know in advance what they're going to find. Often times it's pretty obvious the items have been planted when you see such total non-sequiturs like a rare Ming vase or bakelite jewelry tossed in among a locker full of grungy mechanic's tools. Like the audience is suppose to believe that the owner of the locker was a down-on-his-luck car mechanic who just happened to have a collection of rare, art deco jewelry that he either chose to abandon or had no idea about the value. It's still fun to see what surprises they find in these lockers though. And I'm assuming that somewhere in the LA area a kaiju collector loaned his vintage Marusan piece to the show (or the producers bought it to stick in the locker).
Used to watch this show all the time just to know about the rare things they found but i've cut cable so its been a while. I would though like to watch this episode entirely just to see how they value it and how they describe the piece. I never liked any of the people on that show aside from Barry.
^^ Barry really is the best character on the show, and I love how he doesn't give a f*ck, because hes the CEO of Island Def Jam records. Here is a link to the full episode, http://www.aetv.com/storage-wars/video/the-monster-hash-28778051674 if you jump to about 18:40 its when they take the toys into the shop to be appraised. Looks like the place is called "Jungle" and possibly in little Tokyo, but it could be anywhere in LA really.. I pretty much hate the show but get stuck watching it with people who do.. I have always wondered what they would pay for my storage unit though! Almost enough to not pay my bill.. almost That one hurt.
I could swear this is the exact toy they had on the show: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-1970-Marus ... 0906687377 I think the link is ok, since the price is BiN.
Same figure different toy. On a related note I saw Team Tanktop at TAG last week. He wasn't buying kaiju though.
Island Def Jam Barry: Storage Wars Barry: I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say they aren't the same Barry.
Dammit Google! Why ya gotta make me look like an ass!? Turns out he's got money from fruit and vegetable exporting.. http://starcasm.net/archives/136005
