He thought I might like it because I bought the fortnite stormtrooper skin even though I do not play fortnite.

Just helped my brother swap his Fish Tales pinball machine (Williams '92) for a Jackbot (Williams '95) and we got it done without damaging either one of them. He traded-up. The Jackbot was made in lesser numbers and is worth quite a lot more.

Its the third machine in the Pin-bot trilogy and it mixes robots with a Poker/Casino gambling theme. I played it a bit when we set it up, its way cooler and slicker looking than the whacky fishing themed one.

My forearms hurt a bit now, but it wasn't quite as hard to shift around as I thought.

So for maybe the past month or so I’ve been playing Control: Ultimate edition for the PS5, played it all the way through and I *loved* it. What a game. If you liked the atmosphere of the Portal games, or you’re currently watching “Severence” of Apple TV (which is also amazingly weird) give Control a try. The combat is great, the story is mind bending. I can’t say enough good things about it. It’s part X-Files, part portal, part HP Lovecraft part Metroidvania- so much exploration with bits of information of a really thoroughly realized in-game world hidden throughout. And it ties into the game “Alan Wake” which I then played through before starting the final control DLC. It was so good I made sure I got every achievement available and now I’m replaying to experience the beginning of the game knowing how things unfold in the story.

really great stuff. I’ve heard however the best ways to play are either the PS5 version or PC. the older generations consoles apparently suffer from a lot of slow down from so much happening graphically on the screen as you play.

I recently had the urge to upgrade my handheld retro gaming hardware, and bought an Anbernic 350M to play emulations. It was a big disappointment. The admittedly cool looking machine was insanely heavy for its size (not good for a handheld), the flash card the games were supplied on fried itself almost immediately (I was warned the cards the machine is supplied with were cheap), and then the spring mechanism for inserting the card broke and it went up into the housing of the machine. I returned that shit immediately. The ROM's I did try out varied wildly in quality, but because of their illegal nature, I was at least expecting that part of the experience.

Anyway, I stopped mucking about and bought a Nintendo Switch lite, and i am now enjoying perfect emulation on carts and downloads from the eshop. I'm aware the switch has problems with 'Joycon drift' but because I'm almost exclusively a retro gamer I will mostly be using the D-pad and won't be using the analogue sticks very often.

So far, I've bought the following carts:

    Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection.
    Namco Museum Arcade Pac.
    Sega Megadrive/Genesis classics (50 games).

But, I think my favourite source will be the eshop downloads:

    Arcade Archives:
    Pooyan
    Out Run
    Bomb Jack

    ACA Neo Geo:
    The Last Blade
    Metal Slug 3
    Waku Waku 7
    Puzzle Bobble (Bust a Move) 1 & 2

I absolutely love the Neo Geo arcade ports. Are there any other retro gamers here with a love for the chunky Neo Geo sprites? Any retro game/collection recommendations for the switch in general? I think next up I will download Shock Troopers, Mutation Nation and Neo Turf Masters ...

Cool post Moog, always great to see someone show Pooyan some love. Way underrated Konami title that is always a joy to pick up and play.

Big Neo Geo fan too, used to own an AES and MVS system, still got my Neo Geo rental banner somewhere. In terms of big sprites I always loved the Art of Fighting series, AOF3 in particular looks incredible and never gets enough love. If you like Puzzle games, definitely check out Money Puzzle Exchanger. Neo Turf Masters is also essential, greatest golf game ever.

The Hamster Arcade Archives are awesome, the Donkey Kong port was the first proper home port of the arcade version, well worth owning. More faves include XEXEX by Konami and Omega Fighter for 2D shmups. Other than that, Shiren the Wanderer is a superb rouge-like and the recent Quake port is sublime.

It always amuses me that they chose the name Hamster Corporation for a video game publisher ... the Neo Geo library is so much fun, especially. I love a long Zelda adventure the same as anyone, but there's nothing better than the instant hit of an arcade game. The pick up and play-ability.

I think I will end up buying a lot of the Metal Slugs as well, they're so damn entertaining and beautiful to look at.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

This one looks good, kinda reminds me of 'A Link to the Past' on the SNES.

'Money Puzzle Exchanger' looks good too

I downloaded a few more this morning, including this dusty old one from 1986 i wanted to play when i watched 'Hi-Score Girl' ...

The Genji and the Heike Clans.

There are two more featured in Hi-Score girl i'd like to play if they ever get added to the archives ...

    Bonze Adventure 1988
    [IMG]

    and 'Yokai Dochuki' 1987

I've been stuck on Elden Ring since it came out. Absolutely love it.

Also, it's a late 90s game, but if anyone is looking for a superb RPG, Ogre Battle 64 is amazing. Not sure if it's on any e-stores, but you can easily find a ROM for it online.

@The Moog is Bonze a Ghouls n Ghosts riff? Looks a little that like from the box.

As you mentioned, most of the old arcade companies have realised the nostalgia for their back catalogue and released ‘approved’ emulator versions.

My favourite thing about those old games is watching teens and twenty-somethings playing anything 8bit… and fail miserably

Games were a lot more challenging back then :D

This one was ported to the Switch about 2 years ago, and i've been playing it a fair bit. I love it, its a fun little game at a budget price and its absolutely made for chilling out and relaxing. Its like a cross between Animal Crossing and parts of the Legend of Zelda (without any enemies to kill). It's an open world exploration game in which the player is tasked with reaching the summit of a mountain to get cellphone reception, along with plenty of side games and things to search for.

    A charming little gem ...

I've been going a bit mad with the downloads for my Switch ... two that have stood out the last couple of days are 'Doom 64' and 'Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti'. The latter is a chibi version of Splatterhouse that's mainly a comedy parody platformer. Its a lot of fun and was only ever available in Japan on the Famicom, they took a lot of American horror movies etc as inspiration. For example, the first boss i came up against is a a vampire dancing and moonwalking to Michael Jackson's Thriller

The Doom 64 is a bit of an oddity because its a sequel to the first two Doom games, but was only originally available on the N64. I forgot how much i enjoy playing the original style Doom games

Its certainly very similar, I don't know much about the toy itself. Sure, maybe they loved the NES back in the day ....

Elden Ring is such an awesome game. It came out when I was still recovering from covid and that truly helped while my head couldn’t concentrate on anything. I’m slowed down since I started to feel better and am now finally arrived to the last boss (I mean I think I am…. this game is so huge and there is always a thing after the thing…)

I recently mentioned an obscure little 1987 Namco title called 'YOUKAI DOUCHUKI' and to my surprise they've just released a port to the Switch on the Hamster Arcade Archives. Its an unusual, spooky little game and is actually funnier than i was expecting. I'm loving it, and the soundtrack is great too.

Late to the party on this one, but i read about it in a retro gaming magazine a year or so ago in their 'classics of the future' section. I bought the Switch special edition last week and have been playing it a lot. Its heavily inspired by 'Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past' which is what caught my attention in the first place. Link to the past is one of my fave games of all time.

Hyper Light Drifter is beautifully done, with glorious pixel art. The soundtrack by 'Disasterpeace' is really good and gives the game extra atmosphere, fitting with the sombre mood of the visuals. The gameplay is the 'easy to pick up - hard to master' kind. I'm still getting to grips with the combat controls, weapons and techniques, but i love it already. Its going to be a challenging game ...

I’ve been replaying Hollow Knight for the last week or so… it’s much less difficult the second time around, I’m finding. Still difficult, but not throw my controller at the screen difficult. I don’t know if I chose a better path, grabbing different items at different times- but some of the bosses that I had to fight dozens of times the first play through only took two or three tries this time around. I can’t wait for Silksong.

it’s a beautiful game. I wholly recommend playing it, preferably with headphones on a TV. The art, story and music, the attention to detail are all top notch if you like metroidvania style games; but it is also a *difficult* game. There is only two settings: “normal” and “steel soul” which means you have to restart from the beginning if you should die. I’m not a sadist so I won’t try that mode. I do wish there were an easier setting. I played the entire game, including the dlc “white palace” section, then got to the final boss and couldn’t defeat him. I ended up watching the ending on YouTube. But it was still absolutely worth it.
