Oh indeed, its the first game to feature Yoshi, star of one of my fave platform games ever ... Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island
Everything I’ve heard my friends say about Starfield makes me want to play it.. but my backlog is saying “no more”
Yes, its been weird seeing some of them go up in value so much. Paper Mario especially! I recently bought this one, i didn't think much of Vol.1 and didn't buy it, but this new release is much more interesting. Its bare bones with just the games, you can download most of them individually, but i like retro collections to have random games i wouldn't normally choose to play. Four have stood out so far, i haven't played them all yet ... New Zealand Story. I'd heard of this game but never got to play it before. Classic Taito, it reminds me of Bubble Bobble. Liquid Kids. I already had this from Hamster, but its nice to have it on a physical cart now. Again, classic Taito. Kiki Kaikai. I love the sequel Pocky & Rocky, but i find it a bit hard, so i'm hoping this one will ease me into the gameplay more gently. Metal Black. Never played it before, its quite janky in a good way, and has very trippy visuals. Lots of fun!
@The Moog wasn’t aware of the Taito collections until you mentioned it but having now looked at them, I have to say I’d buy Vol 1 just for Elevator Action and Front Line - both of which I played in arcades in the early 80s and have great memories of. Could probably buy them independently, as you mentioned, but as you said, having the cart is nice.
Not sure if these have been mentioned yet: https://newwavetoys.com/ but they are amazingly well made reps of the original cabs from the dawn of arcades. 1/6th scale, they aren’t too large but are still very playable with the details being spot on. For the UK audience, you can find the sold out ones online at a large UK retailer, should you want. Random YouTube video, of which there are many showing the various cabs with reviews:
Maybe i should have another look at the first collection, i didn't recognise any of the game titles, so i may have judged it a bit harshly. Yeah, i've seen these in Retro Gamer magazine. They look really detailed. I'd love a little mini arcade but i don't think i could spare the cash.
Picked up Baldurs Gate 3 recently. I'm an Orc with a worm in my head, traveling with a Vampire, a cultist, and a dude that gets magical tummy aches. I opened some barn doors against the advisement of my party and interrupted a bugbear and an ogre having sex. In spite of my apologies they attacked me so I had to kill them... Good times!
I recently downloaded the PICO-8 fantasy console: https://www.lexaloffle.com/pico-8.php It's a lot of fun. If you don't want to pay $15 for the software, you can play the games in a browser.
I'd heard of Raspberry Pi but not PICO-8. I assume this is a kind of shareware / programming thing. It looks really cool.
PICO-8 is just software, think of it as an emulator for a game console that never existed. When you pay for it, you can run it under Windows, Mac OS, or Linux, and there is a Raspberry Pi build for people who want to make their own homebrew devices. There is a similar project called TIC-80 that I haven't tried out yet. Wikipedia pages: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PICO-8 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TIC-80
I've been playing Minecraft Dungeons with my five year old. I've been having so much fun with it that sometimes I play it solo once he goes to sleep.
Here's an appropriate PICO-8 cartridge, a remake of Crush, Crumble, and Chomp: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?pid=103706#p
Somebody mentioned Nemesis the other day, and it reminded me that it was the first Shmup i ever owned, and it was a great one! Nemesis (1990 Game Boy) Part of the 'Gradius' series. So, fast forward 33 years and the Shmup i'm currently obsessed with is 'Mushihimesama'. Just a slight difference in graphics and gameplay! 'Bug Princess' (2004 Arcade / 2021 Switch)
The Gradius series is easily my fave shmup experience. Just the right amount of difficulty and a killer soundtrack to go with it.
Got Majora's mask in TOTK over the weekend. Thought one of the levels had two Lyonels at the same time. Glad I was wrong.
To me Mushihimesama is one of the best of Caves lineup. If you get the chance to check out its sequel "Futari" definitely do. Its far and away my favorite shooter. I think its currently only available on X Box 360 but hope it gets a Switch release soon.
Yeah, I'm definitely a Cave convert I've got 'ESP Ra.De.' on the way in the post too, it's apparently a very good port on the Switch. And I didn't know about the other Mushi games, just looked them up. There's something about the insect theme that really adds to the excellent gameplay. It reminds me of Centipede by Atari ...
Have my TOTK saved at a shadow soldier in the depths that is offering a pristine royal guard's claymore. I have not selected the sword yet though. I keep reloading over and over trying to get the damage buff, but no luck after hours of trying. Is the chance at the buff behind an enemy kill number level that I've yet to reach?
Golden Sun is such a gem, it doesn’t get enough recognition. I remember being floored by the battle animations, I had never seen combat look so good on a non-3D handheld. But hey, with all the remasters coming out these days, maybe we’ll see it come back again. I’ve currently been playing Starfield. I know that a lot of people have strong opinions on the game, but my opinion is pretty simple. If you were looking for a Bethesda game, you got a Bethesda game. If you were looking for something more, you probably will be disappointed. Probably 50+ hours in at this point.
