Re: The "What you just got in the Mail" Thread
Just picked these up from Mandarake, and all I could surmise from the listing was 'MM-Son of Soil ' Anybody know who made them ? Couldn't find a stamp on the toy anywhere, the packaging pics are in the spoiler.

Re: The "What you just got in the Mail" Thread
Those are BEAUTIFUL! They look very much like BearModel's Tsuchinoko, but the sculpts are a bit different. Here's a great little post that ultrakaiju made about them a couple of years ago: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=38011&start=375The variation/similarity in packaging between his and yours is quite interesting. What's the size on those pretties? edit: Found something: http://ameblo.jp/kaizokusouko/entry-12064204385.html

Re: The "What you just got in the Mail" Thread
Thanks, D ! Really cool toys. Always wanted the Bear Model versions as well. They measure 8" long, and about 1 1/2" wide. The yellow/green one has his tongue perpetually stuck out, and it just kind of wiggles when you squeeze. The orange/brown one works like it was made yesterday.
Thanks for the link !

Re: The "What you just got in the Mail" Thread
エムエム (MM) seems to be the maker, but I can't find anything else that looks similar using that search with tsuchinoko or sofubi. Searching for that will also come up with M&M stuff and another modern character named エムエム among other things.

I always thought the Bear Model,RealxHead, etc. versions were tributes to the ones I scored, but admittedly that assumption is based entirely on my own observations. For what it's worth, the packages seem vintage...crinkly, thin plastic, ultra thick cardstock, and rusty staples. I also found this post on the boards....looks like a different color scheme, but the size and mouth apparatus seem the same. http://skullbrain.org/bb/viewtopic.php?f=30&p=329628#p329628

Re: The "What you just got in the Mail" Thread
Really excellent scores Erik! I definitely enjoy my pair of tsuchinoko , and have been meaning to pick up a set of the ones you got as well, I have seen them from time to time. There are definitely vintage toys of these out there, and I am not certain when I seen them come up which it is exactly. I think this specific set could be more modern remakes of the unlicensed toys, but are probably a bit older (i.e. not current era). The vintage style packaging is just excellent, and I love the colours on your two. They are still making new variations of these toys, and some might recognise the inspiration for one of the RxH figures.

Re: The "What you just got in the Mail" Thread
@Bryce, thanks for the vote of confidence, but truthfully, I don't know much more about these than any of you.
I've always assumed the versions found by Bitterpill to be vintage toys. But they seem to show up fairly regularly unopened and in good condition. So I wonder if they are not actually that old- maybe they are from the 80s or 90s. I see the 'balloon blower' versions quite a bit. I have never seen the 'tongue' version before. That is pretty cool.
Looking at my old post dug up by Bitterpill, that version of the balloon blower Tsuchinoko does seem to be older than his two, just looking at the paint wear. The head sculpt is also different, and it has a white 'straw' in its mouth where the one found by Bitterpill just has a hole. So perhaps Bitterpill's versions are less-old repros of a vintage vinyl?
The Bear Model Tsuchinokos probably do pay homage to the balloon blower vinyls, at least the small one. That never occurred to me, but the smaller vinyl does seem to have the hole in its mouth.
I haven't thought about the Tsuchinoko vinyls in a while, but seeing all the photos together brought up some interesting comparisons.

I saw a different version of this toy recently on Medicom: http://www.medicomtoy.co.jp/list/9760.htmlSuch a bizarre looking toy! Reminds me of the Sunguts Shigeru Mizuki line. Is it from a show or anime?
