I have spent long periods hanging in Japan and I would just go shopping at the market. Best fruit and veggies ever. seems like it would be easy to maintain extreme veggibletarian status. all that good tofu as well. I suppose if your eating fastfood at train station its impossible.

luckily, I respect nature...and since nature equipped me with Top Predator status and full on Omnivore set of teeth....I say thanks Mother Nature, hand me the cow....

LOL.

how to you guys get all your amino acids and so on? pills?

Actually Frank your teeth are more suitable for grinding and chewing plant/vegetable matter, not ripping flesh apart. Hence the absence of fangs and sharp teeth. ;) (Our stomachs are lousy at processing meat as well, so we need to cook food...tres unnatural...)

Anyway....tofu yeah that's another good one!

In Japan it's really just a matter of knowing where to go and how to go about getting decent food. Of course it's doable. It's just a matter of time, since sorting all that out does take a bit of time (it's not always easy to find a supermarket, trust me!) especially when you're traveling to a lot of places outside of Tokyo.

the back molars are for grinding the front teeth and canines are for the rending of flesh. the human tooth kit is designed for eating everything. Omnivore predator/scavenger is what gave us dominant life form status.

Vegetarianism these days is an unnatural personal lifestyle choice...it has naught to due with physical reality.

Vegans are not better than Omnivores and Omnivores are not better than Vegans.

but..if we are ever lost in the woods..i'll have a belly full of animals....I hear pine needles are tasty. LOL.

Hmm, well, we'll just have to disagree on some of that. Based on everything I've read, the only food the stomach processes on its own without needing to draw on resources from the body is fruit, which is digested in around 20 minutes.

Meat (which needs to be cooked, incidentally, so we can process it at all) takes hours to digest, and a large percentage of what we eat is wasted, passing right through the digestive tract without being utilized. Essentially, whereas we can eat damned near anything (as you point out), we're a whole lot better at extracting nutrients from fruits and vegetables than from meat.

Anyway, like I said I'm not trying to sell anything to anyone but since you brought up biology I thought I'd chime in with some counter-evidence. ;)

then please explain why man began to hunt and scavenge animals in the first place.

in 'real' paleo terms a hunk of meat contains many many more calories and protiens than its equivelant weight/gathering effort in vegetable matter.

REVERE THE ANCESTORS!

also...on further thought...I think bacon is more of a fruit...being so succulent and all.

LOL I'm not debating the actions of early homo sapiens sapiens or whether they ate meat. Hey, gorge yourself if you want - it's your body!

But the fact is we're no longer tromping across the plains spearing hyenas, so, no disrespect to Fred and Barney, but I'll pass on the Brontosaurus Burger... Living our cosy sedentary lives, we can choose what goes into our guts. So I make my choice, and you yours. Fortunately we can both indulge in our respective food fettishes quite conveniently in this crazy age of refrigeration. ;)

Sadly, Frank is actually right. Our dentition is pretty close to other primates like chimpanzees and baboons and they are omnivores.
Most anthropolgist believed that man adopted meat eating due to changes in the African landscape from going to forest to savanah. So spending more time on the ground and scavenging became the rule of the day. Having say, 10 oz of animal that you happen to find left over from another animal is more energy effieicent as compared to trying to gather 10 oz of berries, grains, leaves etc when its a scavenge situation or a harsh environment. Hunting came much later.

And there are benefits to 'meat eating' and its not really the meat, but fat and the quick load of calories which may be the real biological drive to eatinig meat in the first place. And for human survival today we clearly do not need to eat meat to survive.

Oh, and Im a vegan for the record.

I hear that, and it's the prime reason for obesity throughout the world. Meat is certainly super packed, nutrient wise. Unfortunately it comes with fat and a lot of other not-so-body friendly elements.

Places like McDonalds thrive because of their high oil, sugar, and fat content - things the brain thinks are "good things" because, as you point out, back in the day when these resources were scarce, attaining them was quite a meal and could sustain the body for long periods. So in a way we are hard-wired to (literally) sniff out these foods.

These days, however, with the cheap abundance of these once scarce resources, people feed on meat and other high calorie/fat food several times a day. That, coupled with our sedentary lives, leads to obesity and, ironically, a host of health problems.

So yeah I agree. We have plenty of choices now. Hey, Buddha, Gandhi and John Lennon were vegetarians. I'll take that company any day.

(BTW chimps' and other primates' diets are largely vegetarian. Aside from insects, their animal product intake is rather limited. I vote we send Frank an insect hoagie to go along with his bacon. ;) )

its quantity, not what u eat.

sure, if youre hogging down 3 triplecheeseburgers a day your a fool and are gonna stroke out young, but if you a decent balanced 1800-2000 calorie a day range of all foods and lay off sugars and get a decent normal amount of activity...thats optimal.

my 'food rules' are I try to eat no packaged or preserved foods. and NO fast food at all. 1 soda a week maybe, no booze. no cheese ( I hate cheese).

just about everything I eat is 'real' frsh meat or fish, fresh made breads, fresh fruit, vegetables etc.

Im 45 and just had a full physical and im A-OK..actually 'well developed' according to the doc.

I know LOTS of 'vegans' that are basically big fat pigs that live on potato chips and orange soda. I am way healthier than they are.

plus, HOW CAN U NOT EAT SCRUMPTIOUS BACON?

thats just crazy talk.

as far as animals...all they do is eat each other all day long so I gots no problems eating them..and most veggies are full of poison that we have either bred or cooked out of them etc. NATURE IS WAR.

Well, hell, them's some good rules to live by. May not agree with the bacon side of all that, but the rest of it is pretty solid. Add regular exercise to the list and it's good to go!

I agree, and failed to mention that most primates with our dentition do rarely eat meat and they do eat a largely vegetarain diet (hell vegan!) except the passing bug next to them or while grooming etc.
Our overeating of meat and processed foods is a really big issue and a lot of our new/modern choices are actually bad or tied to a quick biological rush. French fries are a prefect example, Carbs/Sugar, Salt and fatty oil... early man would have worshiped it and killed for them no doubt.

The only thing I would not agree with is the good company, you can keep that John Lennon stuff away from me

Buddhism is a slave/famine religion, enforcing a caste system to insure social dominance by the elect over the many and the stabiltiy of a labor intensive hydraulic irrigation economic system.... 'be quiet and suffer and maybe next go round you'll be better off. now go dig more canals'-fuck that.

LOL Frank you may know a thing or two about anatomy and anthropology, but your sweeping comments on Buddhism reek of head up the rectal passagism. I live in a largely Buddhist country, and there is no caste system. I suppose you're talking about India? Well, if so I don't live there, so I'll refrain from making generalizations that I can't back up.

Well, now I must sleep. The hunt for the SWW Obake, which has caused me much angst due to my attachment fettish, has drained me of the limited energy supplied by my vegetarian diet.

(That, and it's 2 AM....)

Frank

I know a few of 'Fat Vegans' but I know more overweight people who are not. They all come in different shapes and sizes. I run 7 miles 4 times a week, that is clearly not for everyone and I am not a 'thin' vegan as we often get sterotyped for. I am glad you are conscience enough to make healthy decisions.

As for the Budhism comment, you can replace Budhism with protastant as well, hell almost any relgion with changing a couple words on the section.

I think Budha is cooler then Budhism, I think the perovious comment was on the philosophy end not the religious aspect

To each his/her own

the original idea behind Protestants was cool, but as with all things that involve people it became lame.

NO SYSTEM is best. lets just worship the reality of the universe.

all I am saying is that all the OG agricultural Asian and Eurasian civs where based on exploitation of a huge labor source to maintain water systems. Hinduism and Buddhism where actively encouraged by the ruling classes because their 'pacifist' ideals made them perfect to convince the vast downtrodden minority not to make a ruckus. So, in essence slave religions.

The Sikhs where perhaps the one exception to this, being a mercantile and aggressive people with definately non pacifist beliefs and a yen for self improvement. Hence their constant persecution...

Hydraulic Societyes are fascinatin' reading.

To be clear...
Im not endorsing anyone or any belief, I am not a man of faith at all. What I meant was the people behind the movements if its Bhudha, Hitler whomever are not 'cooler' just more interesting.

The list of history torts can go one forever for that matter with or with out religion.
