Are these girls hired to dress up, or are they actually fans of the characters they dress up as?

theres this huge cosplay con that they hold in baltimore. Its called odakon and it feels like it shuts down that city. nothing but people, mostly girls, walking around in amazing costumes.

SOME of them work on the stands.

A few of them are aspiring models I guess
(One girl I tried to photograph had like a bodyguard
and I got shooed away cuz I wasn't waiting in line).

But for the majority of them, THIS is their hobby ...
Pretty sure a lot of the costumes are home-made.

I really have no problem with Japanese Cos Players, they put lots of work into it. Not saying American fans don't, but they always seem a lot less impressive. Also, they usually don't fit in their outfits in my experience.

Boston has a similar (though American) scene at Anime Boston 2006 last year. There were areas where girls would just hang out all day in costume, posing for cameras.

I appreciate the effort the japanese cosplayers put into their costumes. Even if it doesnt look great (rarely the case!), you can tell they've spent a great deal of time and passion creating their outfit.

What shits me is the 18 yr old guys who put on a blonde wig and call themselves Naruto, gtfo!

:)

So if these attractive young ladies enjoy dressing up as their favorite characters, why do all the geeks have such a hard time hooking up over there?

I would think instead of buying a creepy lifesize doll of your favorite anime character, it would be much more rewarding to chat up and hook up with a female fan who enjoys dressing up.

geek boy + geek girl = geek love. It's basic nerd math.

You would think so, but the doll is MUCH easier for the people into it, and probably MORE rewarding, in their mind. No disappointment, no heartache, and she's exactly what you make her. It's probably much easier for them to "shack up" with their fake girl, than invest in a complicated human relationship. I certainly don't understand it. No wonder the birth rates in Japan are so low.

As for putting on a wig and calling yourself Naruto, it's just the next silly progression from putting a piece of foam on your head and calling yourself Goku....

I guess you're right.

I just always assumed that there were no compatible girls so our otaku friends were loners without recourse. The revelation that there are girls that share some of the same obsessions makes the dolls etc. all the more disturbing.

I went to this two years ago and it was overrun with cosplay.

The costumes they make are great! it's a bit much in some cases, but hey to each their own.
