Does that mean the villagers would have me lynched for having Bwana paint over my MT SDCC 06 clear red painted edition of 50 mini Zagaron that is in my avatar?

I guess I need some structure to what I collect. Some people only collect certain toy lines, or colours or sizes or whatever. Some people mix and match, sometimes with amazing results, sometimes not.
I just don't understand collecting commissioned customs.
Just seems too random to me.
But then some people collect railroad spikes...

I see them as a good complement to the standard collection. Granted, I don't collect Secret Base or much Gargamel, and the only things I've ever had anyone customize are the "nude" M1s. I guess I'd never JUST collect customs, just a few added in for "flavor". I don't like the idea of a rare toy being painted over, but when it comes down to it, you buy it, you do what you want with it.

i understand this, but there are ways
to tighten the focus of a custom collection, too,
like having multiple customs based on the same sculpt,
or lots by the same artist.

Nothing screams play with me like a custom "toy."

I wouldn't think so.
Not that value is a big part of this game for some people.

good debate! I love it!
I asked koji to customize my silver smogon cause I knew he would make it look rad! nothing more, nothing less. I love the job he did. Koji is part of Gargamel so I am honored to have him customize this silver smogon.
As to the question is painting figures really collecting? Hell yeah! it's called collecting rad customs!
What's funny Liquid, is that you seemed to like the last custom, of an equally rare Dragamel that Koji also did: http://www.skullbrain.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=6859
I find the hypocrisy and double standards.......amusing!
Where was the outrage when another boardmember customized a GID Chaos? Where was the controversy when a Bemon was recently customized? That's not very rare is it??
It's fine with me and doesn't really bother me cause.....LOOK AT HOW RAD THIS CUSTOM IS!!!! I LOVE IT!!

So if Koji is from Gargamel and he customizes a Gargamel figure, is it then a custom or is it a one-off? Hmm, something to think about, eh?

I think that line really sums it up for a good portion of people around. I may be the odd man out but I often feel that a lot of scults are wasted on a paint scheme I don't care for but I love the sculpts. Gargamel Pinwheels come to mind. I love the figure, but i can think of only 2 of the paint jobs I actually like, I think they and a good number of other toys look better as a herd unpainted.
Needless to say I have been impressed and inspired by many of the customs I have seen here from the likes of Paul, LASH and the others.
Bottom line to me is, its your toy, do what thou wilt.
Enjoy, or don't.

I love the effect. It almost appears as if the colors are anodized into the figure! With the worldwide fascination with the automobile, this figure screams to be customized. It also helps that the orange vinyl version is still readily available for $36.00 or so.

Jeff,
As one who customizes (rare Rumble Monsters), i find this interesting.
You're a hypocrite. Please give me back that Booska that you were going to customize for me! hell, while you're at it, also send back that Jyrinco Mutant Evil that you were going to paint like Santa's elf!

maybe i should rephrase myself.... i agree that getting customs done by someone isn't really "collecting", maybe it's some sort of OCD thing. sort of like I wouldn't buy an autographed comic or baseball card because I feel it has been defaced... but I would get a comic or baseball card signed for myself solely for sentimental reasons. However, if it is some chase baseball card and it came from the pack autographed, i'd want it. I also feel a bit uncomfortable stripping away paint... unless i think it's real ugly. nonetheless, I love seeing pictures of all the customs done on the board and if koji put up a smogon for sale in the b/s/t, I would bitchslap everyone for it for it.
they've looked like this for awhile

Like I said up thread, "Just got tired of ranting at people who paint over figures."
And the Dragamel comment, was just an observation, not approval.
I would have probably said nothing had the issue not been raised by someone else.
But in the end, obviously people can do whatever they want.
It just becomes another mobius strip thread. A neverending debate.

I can see the argument on both sides. But in the end, I don't care and custom that bi-atch if you wanna. I'd say just sell it if it's rare use the money to buy more figs, including a cheap version of said rare sculpt and get THAT painted, but I'm all about capitolism and getting your money to go farthest. Also, if anyone has that rare figure, better for them, it just got rarer.
