Kathie Olivas: Benny and Red Bird
I am not sure how many fans she has on this board but I thought I would throw it up and see how people react.
I think the colors are a little glossy but the sculpt is cool. It reminds me of the Woodring toys which is strange because their art is very different. i can't wait to see the final version.

I'm not sure but they are way behind on their release schedule. I think it is supposed to come out at some point.

rabbit reminds me of a custom 10" ciboy. seems weird to make a production toy from a custom of another production toy.

Have to see this in real life. The colors seem too pastel, as well as the glossiness you mentioned. So many painters have a hard time translating to vinyl - just look at the Camille Rose Garcia figs. Yuck!!!

A bit too cutsey for my taste, but it looks interesting. The bird reminds me of Nathan Jurevicius's ScaryGirl stuff and the rabbit has a ninja look to it. The tentacle legs definitely remind me of Woodring.
It would kinda fit in with my StrangeCo and Woodring stuff, but I'm not made of money and gunning for other stuff.
Also interested in how that Violet piece turns out with Wheaty Wheat.

I like it. I like seeing 2 different companies interpret Kathie's work in vinyl and with WW's schedule, I'm not expecting it anytime soon. It does look a little glossy, but it has that Woodring-esque brought to life feeling. I think my daughter would love it and she'll have one.
I'm diggin' companies getting in and developing the details of an artists work more in the vinyl.

oh no western!!
regarding the colors,
MisKat wrote: Hey Kids, thanks for the kind words! That pic is a 3-d digital concept-- not a true picture of the actual paint master. The colors will all be matte finish and the main color way will be closer to my actual customs. I'll see if Mind Style will let me post actual pictures when I get the prototype this week. As far as Wheaty Wheat, I am told that my Violet figure will go into production right afetr Ringo Bear and the Inkslinger, so maybe later this year.

I love her paintings, sculpt, customs, etc. , but these are missing the "dark moody" shading that sets her stuff off for me. Too clean.

An excellent point that I wish more Western artists who wish to venture into toy design would consider more thoroughly. Camille Rose Garcia's unappealing toys are an unfortunate example of how the translation didn't "work" for most people. Similarly, artists who work with "platform toys" should realize that while their designs might be very clever on paper, they should ideally work brilliantly with the platform sculpt, as opposed to simply slapping a bunch of graphic design all over it to mark it as their work. I am so tempted to deconstruct Tokidoki on this point, but I'd rather not incur the wrath of a million 13 year old Tokidoki-worshipping females ... like my niece.
Olivas' new toys pictured above don't appeal to me at all, although they might if they had a darker edge as another member said. I dunno ... maybe it's the bunny thing. Must every western toy have bunny ears?
As a personal aside, I'm finding it increasingly "tired" that the vast majority of western artists designing toys hail from the "Lowbrow" and "graffitti" catagories. Don't get me wrong, I have enormous enthusiasm for artists in both camps and have going back decades, before lowbrow art was called that, but ... it's so entirely predictable now. Every time I see a new toy that's basically some anthropomorphized animal in hip hop duds holding a spray paint can, I want to put it in a hot oven and watch it melt. That was so cool for many years ... now it's predictable and boring IMHO. This is a stereotypical example but you know what I mean. What was once so fresh and liberating and entertaining is now becoming the boring norm.
I think of Mars-1 as a good example of a western artist whose toys compliment the universe of his art perfectly, "work" perfectly, and buck the sort of stereotype I'm bored with.

LOL ... you read me like a book.
Thing is, some perfectly nice people do like them, but ... they weren't even born when "Rapper's Delight" was all over the AM radio, so maybe they're not as jaded to some stuff as we OG types.

as far as the toy, i think it's better than most stuff out there but i'll probably skip. that's more because i own customs though, and this just can't compare no matter how good the final version looks.

I agree. Maybe there will be some hand painted versions that would look good on the same self with the other KO stuff I have.

I think if nothing else, this is a good representation of her work in vinyl.
I like it more than the Wheaty Wheat piece too. Not sure why...this one seems more lively...also it will probably be released this decade.

I like this piece. I can see myself picking this up if the colors do end up being closer to the original.

It does look promising, and if the colors end up closer and less glossy I'll probably pick it up. I like her darker edged stuff and the custom & painting I commissioned from her are definitely on that end of her spectrum, but I do like this one.
I'm not holding my breath on the Violet from WW dropping any time soon either, so this would be nice in the meantime.

Cool, and please don't feel insulted by my comment! I was intentionally exaggerating my perspective, which is based on whom I see buying and wearing Tokidoki stuff in my city. "To each their own" rules the day ... I'm sure some of my friends are thinking that I've age-regressed for collecting toys. Oh well, their loss.

i'm not offended, just had to step up as a fan. ^^
but i'm really worried if 13 year olds can afford the purses .... they are not cheap, espcially the larger and more detailed ones!
somehow i'd guess these kids aren't mowing lawns on the weekends. LOL
