Yeah, patience is fun and all, but why wait if you don't have to? The folks who search for years would've jumped on the first opportunity to get that desired item if it came up on this wonderful board or elsewhere--but maybe it didn't. I think the sooner the better--especially with all the flippers out there with their K & Y jelly (btw, I'm not tryin' to totally hate on the flippers or say I'm above it; a rare item for sale is still for sale--though suckily--but we know flippin' ain't how you win friends!)

But doesn't it become an infinite loop of immediate gratification?

A toy is released but one misses it at retail.
Herd mentality and panic sets in.
One buys said toy at inflated flipper prices.
Herd mentality and panic fades.
Toy can be found at a later date at a reasonable price.
Repeat.

Obviously this doesn't apply to all toy lines or releases.
But I've seen it enough in my short time here.

And the people who are searching for years, they are hunting for extremely unusual or rare things. Or so I have heard.

Yeah, I see what you mean! Thankfully, I'm not one of those people. I only just started to actually collect this stuff--but that isn't to say that I only became aware of it at that point. I edited my post because to say that I didn't quite mean that how it came out; ppl should use good sense, when collecting, but don't let a good opportunity pass you by.

I don't think ppl should just whip out tons of cash on the spot because it's available 2hrs after it sold out. I think good judgement is priceless, but don't miss out if you know what's best.

Sure is! I've been a fool in the past and jumped, then maybe 2 weeks later someone totally awesome offered the damned thing up for retail.

patience does pay off.

it took 5 years to find all the Fiery jacks I wanted. And many dissapointments like seeing one in Hong Kong and the dude saying 'not for sale'.

the fiery jack hunt was my longest constant hunt.

most shit is out there if your willing to fork mad cash...but once in a while you really really got to be patient.

Patience(key word here)
When I started collecting this stuff a few months back,I bought a little of this and a little of that, then I purchased my first RxH fig and I was FUCKED! I have finally found something that really gives me enjoyment to collect, and tha crazy thing is I know I will never have a complete collection of RxH but I don't give a shit! If I can pick 1 or 2 figs up every month or so I'm happy, and some day I'll have a BIG RxH collection! I also collect CP's,when I first bought one I really didn't know if I would like it or not and come to find out it's one of tha coolest lowbrow art collectibles(IMHO)out there. So all of you out there that ordered tha ZAG CP and minizag set you may become a Circus punk fan and not even no it yet!

I have basically been collecting nothing but S7 exclusives, and nowadays i am buying more RxH stuff, but I would like to snag some Target Earth things too. If I like it I might buy it if the price is fair and I am financially "able." I have no delusions of grandeur at "completing" any of these!

2 days ago, I bid on a superfest chaos on YJA. I really wanted it, so I got robbed.

The next day, I found one on YJA for the RFSO price.. so naturally, I picked it up. Thus, leaving me w/ 2 mutant chaos..

I plan to sell one at exactly half of what the combined two cost me..

am I a flipper ?

No, but don't expect anyone to buy it (although, if there are more collectors like Vombie, someone probably will). You overpay, thus expect someone else to overpay?

Of course this desire, the hope or expectation that someone will do so, is ancient, dating back at least to the Tulip Bubble.

It's the 'bigger fool theory' - as in, "I'd have to be a fool to pay $X for this ... But, what the hell, I can probably sell at a profit to a bigger fool."

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigger_fool_theory

I have noticed more and more board members selling off new toys almost as soon as the buy them.

What's the point of this?

If you don't like a toy, why buy it in the first place?

Are our attention spans getting so short that we're already bored with the toy before it even arrives?

I'm not hating on anyone, mostly curious...

I think that it is Internet buying that causes a lot of people to
"flip" their recent purchases............

Sometimes it is really hard to tell what a figure looks like from a small
picture online & very often, with some sellers & artists, you have to sign
up to purchase the vinyl without EVER having seen a picture of it.........
(at times: Kozik, Bwana, etc.) where if you don't jump on the list you
are out of luck by the time you finally see what it looks like.

I think that most of the "flips" are a result of this & when a vinyl
figure is purchased in person & held & looked at before it is bought
there is a lot less reselling of the piece
