suggest your favorite (or rare) arcade games
so I've been geeking out and playing a bunch of MAME roms lately and want some more suggestions
I'm really 2-D run through beat-em-up style stuff a la Double Dragon, Final Fight, TMNT, X-Men, The Simpsons, Superman, etc.
I'm always looking for bizarre, "forgotten" games in that style, like Captain Commando, Ninja Combat (Neo Geo), etc.
also, I'm into almost anything with a fantasy, medieval warrior theme a la Golden Axe, Rastan, Magician Lord, the Ghouls N' Ghosts series, etc.
once again, the weirder the better. if I've never heard of it, I'll check it out.
shooters are cool too
or any suggestion for a good game that I might be overlooking or have never heard of

Kid Chameleon for Sega Genesis, I don't know how rare it is, but I loved it. It boasted like over 100 levels or some crap, but all I know is I never beat it.

I love love love the arcade version of Ninja Gaiden. The "Continue?" screen taunts you with a 10 second countdown to a rotary saw coming down on your chest. Hard. Core. it's a Mame must have.

My favorite "different" arcade shooter was Rabbit Punch. I don't know if there is a rom of it anywhere. When I collected JAMMA stuff, I always looked for it but could never find it. I think there might have been a Master System version too? (it was by SEGA).
Also, for shooters, gotta check out the various versions of Parodius..basically altered versions of Gradius with bizarre characters thrown in.

Have you heard of CHILLER ?
this is the sickest fukin game, literally made my stomach turn. The game is set in misc torcher chambers and stone castles or some shit. Its a first person shooter, but your targets are people on the rack (whom you rip in 2) bats, ghosts, corpses, flying skulls, maidens in flowing robes, half dead dogs, rats, and tons of naked blokes all tied up...
I still cant figure out if I blew the face off a innocent man or what. Then a rat chewed on his bloody skull. The greatest part of the game is the fact no one is attacking you, they are already tied up waiting to die!!!

Tiger Road was an old platformer with a "Kung Fu Movie" theme. The character and level design are top notch tho. Get it if you can its rad!

I believe I have Tiger Road. and some of the Parodius games (I think I even got the dirty one)
Ninja Gaiden is a good call.
I pretty much went through and got most of the Konami and Capcom back catalogs.
next I'm gonna do Sega, Taito, etc.

Besides a few old school pinball machines like CENTAUR, HAUNTED HOUSE and ADDAM'S FAMILY, here are my all time favourites as a kid, in high school and after high school.
Apple II fav - Conan (remember the axe that acts like a boomerang?)
- although I played the green mono version only
Dragon's Lair (high school fav)
Breakthrough in LD type game. very addicted and left me poor. Didn't like the second or third releases.
Virtual Fighter
Mind boggling graphics when it first came out. I think I liked VF2 better.
Fighting Vipers
Can't get enough of it. Smash each other's armor until it falls off then go in for the final kill. If you are a master, you can blow up your own armor and fight without. So cool.

That was easily the most difficult Playstation game to track down, but I have had it for years now.
One of my favorite games of all time, arcade or console

Re: suggest your favorite (or rare) arcade games
Not exactly beat'em up but: Metal Slug 1 - 6, but above all Metal Slug 3 alone, if I had to pick one game for life that would be it, secrets galore and just classic gameplay and amazing pixel art you cant get anywhere else.
Also Shock Troopers 1 and 2, like Ikari Warriors but better:
http://www.neo-geo.com/reviews/neo-revi ... 2/st2.html
I was and still am a big Neo Geo head, nothing beats arcade games imo. The only stuff I find myself playing on 360/PS3 is the arcade downloads.
If by shooters you mean shmups then thats going to be a big list, but a few of the must haves for mame:
Guwange (aka EFFIN' MASTERPIECE!):

ESP RA.DE.

Wow, Altered Beast. I'm having a major flashback. I probably haven't thought about that in 25 years.
Tempest was always my fave. I wasted many hours playing Defender too.
