A Google search on his name will yield many informative hits.

yea i was looking through the website, but google translator doesnt seem all that accurate. i am looking more for the history of his work... main themes, stuff like that

i see the overall yakuza theme and the figures seem to be comments on various society flaws in japan, but has anyone read interviews with dehara or anything discussing his work

have there been more figures than the yakuza themed ones?

is he making a profound statement on human sexuality or is he simply a pervert?

Here's a good interview:

http://metropolis.co.jp/tokyointerviewa ... iewinc.htm

So far as I'm aware there's no "one stop shopping" site in English that will offer all you're asking for. Unless RFSOers who know a lot about the man are willing to help out, I think your best bet is to use Google to find the various art sites, blogs, and so on to find blurbs, pictures, and so on, to get an amalgamate view.

Giant Robot in the USA sells some of his figures and books.

me and cupco interviewed him for the converse conversations project. it's in the zine that comes with the pair of shoes. Giant Robot has done a few stories/interviews with him as well. just check the back issues.

haha

i had to set the google search to english only to find that one near the top

do you know if his work has a big following here? it's pretty intriguing. i like the process of illustrating with sculptures to tell these types of stories

Hm, define "big following." :-)

He's certainly caught the art world's attention, and to some extent, the toy collector world's, perhaps because of the affordability of his original works as well as his uniquely odd toys. There's a lot of respect and affection here for what he's doing, for his originality and twistedness. RFSO member drano recently posted this link to a short movie on the man:

Michael has a cool Dehara shelf, as does joenm.

whoo! i got a mention! haha. i know ive seen way more impressive dehara collections on here.

i love dehara because if its quarky, home made esque style, which are the factors that caught me with kaiju as well. i got into him late in the game, and the hunt for more figures is fun because i can actually get ahold of some of his figures. i still havent caught any handmade ones yet but my dehara collection is slowly growing. once i get a few more figures in these comming weeks ill show some more of what ive gotten.

The large photo prints (12"X20" or so) are very cool too. I scored a number of those from the show at, I believe it was GiantRobot, a year or two ago.

Figures sliced in half and posed in cityscapes. That sort of thing.

Just came across this on the Kaijin blog. The characters are apparently from an anime called Space Brothers. I love the dude on the left!

Giant Robot Issue #34 is the best source for a great detailed interview. Also has some excellent interviews with Tadanobu Asano, Christopher Doyle, Takashi Miike and Pen-Ek Ratanaruang as well.
