Post Anime series like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo
I throughly enjoyed the Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo anime series and wanted to know it there are any others out there that are comparable to the artistic style and energy that I shouldn't miss

I enjoyed both as well.

You might like Afro Samurai. Not bad. Short series, but worth checking out.

Not as hip, but pretty good was Seven 7. Anime re-telling of Kurosawa's classic set in futuristic cyber-punk setting with giant mechas....

one of the better Anime movies I purchased recently as Karas the Prophecy. Awesome graphics and action.

While i'm at it, I really, really enjoyed Appleseed the movie. Can't get better mech action than this... awesome...

What other cool, not cutesy, non overly dramatic, action anime are others watching?? :?:

I can't explain it. I liked the films and series.
But I've also rented stuff that never worked for me despite multiple viewings and others loved it.

Then again I like slow stuff like Brown Bunny... hahahhahhaaa

vampire hunter d: bloodlust is my FAVORITE anime film!!

well, next to that is Ninja Scroll, lol (which u MUST check out)

theres really nothing u can say is really similar to Cowboy Bebop, its so unique

a few other series i love are:
GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka)
Deathnote
Fooly Cooly (of course)
Evangelion is a must for any anime fan, but i found that the significance of it was lost on me the first time i watched it
there are so many, maybe i'll add tomorrow lol

besides that, i watch a TON of shoujo series (girly type stuff) so thats a whole other type of thing

was enjoying Tokko recently but who knows whether that will go on

i rather like alot of Stand Alone Complex, but sometimes the dialogue etc. is just plain crappy and annoying

I'm not big on Anime, but what I like I like a lot. I like Fooly Cooly lots, Vampire Hunter films of course, nothing weird or unknown from me. But Cowboy BeBop has to be my all time fav. I didn't wanna watch it,. to me it was just more anime on Adult Swim, than I watched it once and was sold.

The downside of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is that the plots of the episodes usually rely on technology that's very poorly defined. The more real-life computer knowledge you have, the less sense it will make to you. Despite this, it's still worth watching for the Tachikomas.

I second the recommendation for FLCL. That's the opposite end of the spectrum. It deliberately tries not to make sense and it's tons of fun.

Evangelion is good, too, but keep in mind that most of the religious stuff really has no significance and that the TV series is its own entity. While you're watching that, consider that one story, and then the movies are a different version of the story.

If you're in the mood for some 80s robot anime, definitely watch Armored Trooper VOTOMS and Genesis Climber MOSPEADA.

Nothing does Cowboy Bebop, like Cowboy Bebop, it's a masterpiece.

I definitely must suggest Escaflowne, an amazing series and there is a movie too.

Another amazing series, The Big O, give it a chance and you will grow to appreciate it.

And I have to say it, Trigun, it's dumb, but I love it.

FLCL is the most beautiful 3+/- hours you will ever experience
also checkout
last exile
planetes
paranoia agent
kinos journey
Dead Leaves <fucked up
Gunslinger Girl
these aren't exactly Watanabe style but they are all great

The Animatrix, Watanabe directs a couple shorts on this but the best by far is The Second Renaissance Part 1 and The Second Renaissance Part 2 friggin mind blowing!

Yes! as Jackie states Ninja Scroll is a MUST own. Make sure you get the first one.

I actually found a movie list I created on Amazon a ways back....

Some other notables:

Blue Submarine 6
Demon City Shinjuku

http://www.amazon.com/Top-Ten-Action-An ... 50-3411240

Oh, on Fooly Cooly, i've heard a lot about it. Never seen it. Can someone explain the attraction?

That's a tall order. I would liken it to Crayon Shin-chan or Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo in the respect that after 15 minutes, you know whether or not you love it or hate it. I recommend dipping in with the first episode and seeing if you want to watch more.

I second Big O, both 1st and 2nd series. Love the background music from this show.

Also:

Top wo Nerae 2 (the Gunbuster anime "sequel")
Zegapain (one of the best recent mecha series, I think)
Eureka 7 (takes a while to get into, but it's really good mid-series)

Didn't care for FLCL. Samurai 7 didn't do it for me either, although I expected to be really into it. And yes, I watched the whole thing.

That's what I'd say on FLCL. I watched it and in 10 min was in love. My wife, however, hates it, but out of passion. She WANTS to know what the hell is going on but just get's mad and stomps off anc calls me stupid.

If you guys haven't seen Escaflowne before, you should check it out, this thread has inspired me to go home and watch the TV series from start to finish over the next few weeks. It shall be awesome.

Firefly is cool... I dunno though, Bebop is amazing, and nothing resonates so completely in the genre like it. I'd love to see Firefly off the "canceled" shelf.

Ninja Scroll the Movie is fukin Rad.

They also made a series of 30min episodes. You can find a 3-disk series of these - they are truly awesome, yet not quite as awesome as the movie.

It's worth watching. It takes place a couple of years after the "2nd Gig" episodes. Expect more Uchikomas than Tachikomas.
