Saw it yesterday, I was disappointed with the body count actually.

Felt far less menacing and atmospheric for me than the first film, but this one definitely shows Eli's growing maturity in film making, the film has a better plot and more serious.

I got to meet Eli ( and go for beers after woo!) at a Q+A held by en established group here in Australia called Popcorn Taxi when he was promoting Cabin Fever's theatrical release. Such a crazy guy with an awesome sense of humour, had me in stitches.

I can't wait to see what he does next!

yeah i had no idea there were cameras on the crowd as often as there were. I would have at least TRIED to not look like I have 9 chins. hahaha. Still, fun. I think we can blame our friend Lawrence who runs Fearnet.com's content. I'm thinking we were edited in a little more intentionally. bastard.

haha I have mixed feelings about his incredible amounts of foul language at press screenings and interviews.

on one hand, I think it's very unprofessional

on the other hand, I respect him for just being himself and also I guess he just figures you sat through this totally outrageous, violent, sadistic movie that was also filled with foul language, so you're probably okay with swearing

Cool! It's always such a bonus to get to see screenings with the film makers present.

I get the feeling that Roth does his interviews as a fanboy speaking to other fanboys and girls. He always comes off as passionate which is something I can always get behind.

I saw the movie last night. I liked it but didn't love it. It genuinely shocked me a few times but the original left the sequel with big shoes to fill. I'll agree with Darky that I saw a couple moments of great mature film making. There's a great instrumental montage that blew me away.

I really loved Cabin Fever. It was brutal, it was funny, but more importantly, I thought it was significant because it was the first horror movie I had ever seen that had no monster. I liked it so much I actually watched the DVD again the next night. I was kicking myself that I hadn't seen it in the theater.

I went into Hostel with the same expectations, and although I saw glimmers of the same twisted sensibility about it, I felt let down. Now that Roth has made a sequel to it it seems like he's out of ideas. Can I ask everybody: what did you see in the first one that made you go to see the second one?

I liked the idea of Hostel, I find the whole people fucking with you in a foreign place thing pretty scary, but I wasn't a huge fan of the first movie.

I had press passes to both Hostels, so what I saw in them was a free movie

He's a jock?? So that means he sucks at making movies? He's way into horror and esp. Italian horror. Besides he cast Luc Merenda,Edwige Fenech, and Ruggero Deodato in Hostel2. I need say no more

A little harsh Jess !
Hostel I thought was very cool, nice little social commentry about you bloody Americans thinking you can buy any poor fucker off. Plus really nice tense little flick, bit silly at the end but still, it totally gave horror a new lease of life with the amount of cash it made.

actually, the "silly" part at the end was the only part I thoroughly enjoyed. the first 45 minutes that were just a bad, sex comedy took way too long to get going. then the other torture part was alright, pretty tense and definitely gory, but once again moved rather slowly at times. I didn't feel the film found any real character til the black comedy kicked in.

I didn't hate it though

no deneying Roth is a horror fan, but he's a total sci-fi channel director who for some reason gets finacial support to make multi-million dollar blah horror flicks.
Horror fans are eager to embrace a new generation of horror directors and right now roth is all they have. oh yeah and Rob Zombie but that's a fucking joke that has run it's course... I hope

I guess i'm just a disgruntled old school horror fan

I see your point, and I'm not saying any of these new guys are great, but at least their hearts are in the right place. they are influenced by the "right" movies.

and if you look at the recent output of all the great, old school horror directors, it's all crap. when's the last time Argento or John Carpenter or Tobe Hooper put out something worthwhile? almost all of those Masters of Horrors are crap, the new Third Mother movie is going to be atrocious I'm sure,....they've definitely all run their course of greatness and are now reduced to basically bad TV movies with some glimpses of gore in them.

I think a lot of people just don't care for Eli Roth because he comes off as obnoxious. I think if Hostel were made by a Japanese or French director, a lot of fans would feel differently about it.

and I would honestly rather watch another Hostel sequel than another shitty remake where they ruin some old movie including upcoming stinkbombs like:

Wolf Man remake
Suspiria remake
I Am Legend
Death Race 3000
etc.

If Hostel was japanese or french it wouldn't have 45 minutes of "stupid americans". Unless it's a horror comedy (motel hell, Brain Damage, Basket Case) I prefer the characters to be somewhat intelligent, otherwise it's insulting to the audience.

I Am Legend... one of my favorite books... starring Will Fucking Smith... fucking sad.
I'll stay with Last Man on Earth
Suspiria remake???

I guess you're right, even though I do think that other countries think we're stupid Americans, because a lot of us are.
