Cloverfield
Anyone else see that badass trailer before Transformers with the statue of liberty head flying & the whole city blowing up thru the eyes of someone with a camcorder? looked pretty cool to me. hopefully there will more info at SDCC
there were also some videos on youtube on the movie, but they were taken down.
here's a website keeping track of it:

well... i'm looking forward to seeing more on the movie. i think that getting the look of an amateur using a camcorder mixed in with crazy special fx is interesting... i also still like Lost alot
i thought transformers was decent... i was disappointed that it had no relation to the cartoon besides the fact they used the same names. the character designs were a major letdown, but the fx were amazing.

Website for the film? http://www.1-18-08.com/
and because if you play the games you'll need help: http://thebraxcave.com/2007/07/05/solution-for-ethan-haas-was-right/
I did all but one without the solution hehe.

Upon further review of the bootleg, I agree that it could be Godzilla. I really hope they put Mothra in it. Mothra slays.

I think I'm safe, for now. Wherever I go it isn't long before they find me.
It seems The Mezin are connected to every aspect of humanity, from culture
and religion to our most advanced technology
I have to be more careful contacting all of you. When I began I thought I
could safely speak about his writings and perhaps save us all...
but now it seems I will have to find a more subtle way to share his
visions.
If this is the first message you have received from me do not give up hope!
There are others that have gone before you, the way has been found, you only
need to search and you will find the answers you seek. We are getting
stronger, our voices will be heard!
I have more of Haas's writings, once I find a secure way to transmit them I
will leave you clues to find them.
The more I read the more I realize Haas was right...

Some are speculating that the concept is based on HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, which may be partially true, or a bit of a stretch, given that the speculation appears to be based on Sanskrit references to "Old Ones" in some of the VM text ... except that it would have been Arabic in Lovecraft's world.
I'm very interested in this film, whatever it's actually going to be called, but am wary of premature hype and viral marketing that expects the interested party to keep hunting for clues all over the place. (E.G. "Meet me back here on August 1st." No, I'll just read about it at aintitcool.com or here LOL.)
I think the movie industry grossly underestimates the power of "word of mouth" regarding the success of commercial films while overestimating, to some extent, the allure of hype. Hype can create a blockbuster opening weekend, but if expectations are set too high (as clearly happened with the American "Godzilla" picture) then the letdown is exponentially greater. I'd rather go to this film "cold" with low expectations and a hope that the expectations are set too low, rather than buy into the hype and expect Scariest Monster Movie Ever.

I love hype! I go in with no expectations, I just love the hype before hand. Generally, more hype=more crap, but I still am such a sucker for gimmicks and crap like this. Deep down the 8 year old in me who fell for it still does, just in a way where I know not to REALLY get too excited and just have fun with it.
No hype or lack of hype is a brand of hype too though. Giving nothing but the name of the movie and like maybe 1 quick shot. Hitchcock really used that well.

Nothing wrong with enjoying it, that's for sure! I had fun with the viral marketing buildup to Blair Witch, definitely, and it didn't ruin the film for me one bit. I guess a sour taste was left with "Armageddon" and "Godzilla" though. The SF area was PLASTERED with ads for those movies well in advance of their release, and when they came out ... ugh. It was almost as bad with "Pearl Harbor." Huge amount of hype for a movie that fell far short of its subject matter.

I'm that way with pretty much all movies. I don't want to read reviews beforehand, or see too much of the plot in the preview. Same with LOST and 24 episodes - I would never watch the teasers at the end of the episodes, or any commercials leading up to the next episode.
I already know enough about "Cloverfield" to know that I want to see it - I don't need to know anything else about it.

The trailer (on IMAX, no less) was incredible. The whole feel of terror, what-the-fuck-is-going-on was really well done. I can't wait for this movie. I posted about four related links to it in the TF movie thread. But here they are again: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/http://www.1-18-08.com/http://www.cloverfield-movie.com/blog/http://www.ethanhaaswasright.com/

+1
Particularly if Cthulhu's involved- he's one of my top three all-time fave monsters. I've been waiting for years for someone to do a kickass CGI realization/interpretation of him.

While it wasn't literally intended to be Cthulhu, I thought the tentacle creature at the end of "Hellboy" was about the best unintentional representation I've seen in cinema.
The "Lord of the Rings" movies convinced me that fantasy literature that people assume can't be translated to good cinema actually can be, given the right directorial controls. I used to think that too much about Lovecraft was too nebulously described (and scarier for it) to be translated into literal depictions. I now think that with excellent art direction and ways of conveying fear other than words like "eldritch" and "unspeakable," it can be done. Unfortunately most of the Lovecraft adaptations so far have been low-to-middle budget and very cheesy, if fun. I haven't seen the recent low-budget "Call of Cthulhu" ... has anyone here?
I don't know, but have wondered if some of the Blobpus figures were inspired by Lovecraft's vision. Maybe I just read too much of that stuff as a kid. It seemed so scary then!

Not to derail the thread, but Blobpus' stuff has always reminded me of the dolls from the Jomon period in Japan- at least in terms of the head. But there's definitely something else going on in their design.
Sorry, I'll look for a pic of one of those dolls later.
(Apologies for any historical inaccuracy.)
