Out of curiosity I looked up dogfighting and was glad to see that it's illegal in all 50 states in the USA. Cockfighting is still legal in some states, but very few. Bullfighting without slaughter appears to be legal in some areas ... not sure how to feel about that one as I'm not anti-rodeo even though I dislike animal cruelty. I think it depends upon the level and definition of cruelty involved to some extent.

I used to be part owner of a very sweet female pit bull. She was about the most gentle dog I've ever known ... she played gently with kittens and was always well-behaved. Still, I have mixed feelings about the breed based on stories of nice dogs suddenly attacking people. I don't know enough to have an authoritative opinion about these breeds, except that in urban areas, more and more people think it's cool to train them to be very aggressive.



It's the cool or "pimp" factor. It's a subcultural thing, glorified in gangsta hip hop lore. There's also big money to be made in the game. I had the same thoughts though ... he's already an overpaid athlete ... ain't that enough?

dogfighting i believe is a federal crime. cockfighting and bullfighting and any sort of animal abuse is just repulsive. rodeos are digusting. it takes a tough 'man' to wrestle down a scared calf. any level of cruelty shouldn't be tolerated. civilized people should act civil.

I really tend to agree. I know my perspective might seem iffy ... it's just that I was taken to rodeos as a boy and didn't think of them as cruel until I was an adult. I'm content to let kaiju fight figures do my battles by proxy at this point.

he's been charged with a felony. i believe he has been suspended from the nfl. he derserves to be banned. the max he could get for what he has been charged is 6 years. drowning, electricuting, slamming dogs on the ground until they die... is 6 years justice?

i'm sorry but this topic really infuriates and saddens me. when his house was first raided i would listen to the reports on espn radio on my way to work. i would listen to how these animals were treated and then look across to my dog sitting in the passenger seat with his ears back, eyes squinting just struggling to sit up and stay awake while i drove. and i couldn't imagine him suffering that type of abuse or what i would have to do in order to get him to want to kill or hurt another animal. it truly saddens and sickens me.

I HATE dog fighting just about more than anything. In the old/bad are in Chicago where I grew up it went on, but you couldn't do anything, especially as a kid. Worst was when I'd see, the next morning, a poor pitbull with scabs and scars sometimes still bleeding, walking the streets the next morning barely alive. I've been trying to get into the fire dept. for the last 6 months, but also the police and a lot of people don't understand the cop part. The ONLY drive I have to become a police officer is that the force that go out and find and stop dog fights is SO small. I feel like more people should be on this, it's sick. I hope this guy get's tied up and dropped in a pen with some of those pissed off dogs.

I have been involved with breeding and showing American Pit Bull Terriers for most of my life. Vick has been a known dogfighter for years, and has been on the "do not sell to" list of reputable breeders for a long time. I've heard that he buys most dogs through a 3rd party. Probobly his cousin who ran the operation at the house that was busted.

I work in Atlanta so it's all over the news, but I remember like 2 or 3 weeks back some other football player was commenting on it all and to sum up his opinion on it, he said something (of the sort, this isn't an EXACT quote) 'I don't see what the big deal is, a man does what he wants in his own home behind closed doors, it's his business. If you wanna see a dog fight, I can find you a dogfight, we'll go down some dirt road.' Like I mean by his logic, if someone wnats to have sex with a baby behind closed doors, his business right? Some people need to get prison raped.

I didn't read the article - reading the responses in this thread is enough. To me, animal abuse is worse than abuse towards humans. Animals aren't able to understand or process what's going on, and aren't able to defend themselves. Even in the most over-matched human/human cases, a person has the ability process what's going on and possibly defend themselves.

I have a Boston Terrier and I've heard that they're sometimes stolen to train fighting dogs because they will actually fight back but aren't able to do any damage to the larger dogs. I would probably kill a person if they stole my dog and used her as a training dummy.

Louisiana is THE last state where cockfighting is legal and a law was just passed to outlaw it.

I am not sure when it goes into effect.

Cool. Odd that info at the Humane Society website is slightly out of date but it appears that outlawing the practice has come a long way since last I checked. It wasn't too long ago that it was still legal in Texas.

There's been an ongoing debate in California for a few years regarding bullfighting. If I understand correctly, it's permitted in some areas if the animal isn't tortured during the "fight" or killed at the end.

If Vick is found guilty, I hope he loses his NFL career.

I really can't understand why someone who already was making so much money wanted to make more by participating in such a horrific blood sport.

Not only that- I'm sure the participation of someone of his wealth and "stature" in dogfighting only served to further validate it as a manly pursuit/lifestyle aspect to all the sick idiots he came in contact with thru it.....
