You get what you give, brother...
Somebody from hippieland should already know that...
Offering assistance to people that can't make it is a great gesture---but trying to recoup your trip expenses by charging a fee, plus more for shipping, is not the way this board "rolls", and it really shouldn't take much effort on your part to have figured that out by now. You might have found that people would have been grateful for the help and would have offered you more money or toys anyway.
You made a mistake. You may be able to correct it in time, but some folks have long memories around here...
Good luck, and enjoy your time at SDCC

thanks _______.i already apologized in the first post in the new thread and then tried to explain myself a little better which just dug me deeper so whats the point? anything i say can and will be used against me regardless....a bunch of people on here have already made up their mind about me, tho they have never even met me and don't know things about me like that i've been a volunteer reader for Lighthouse for the blind for nine years and going now or that i've taught community art courses for underprivelidged children for free or a whole host of other things about me that are good and noble. it's all about the toys and that seems to be all that matters. If I don't fit in here because i don't do things the way certain peolple DICTATE that i do, then so be it. i have been polite and proper in most cases on this board since being here and will continue to do so. I'll just stay out of the way and not be a really active member of the community becasue it's been made clear that i am not worthy by some.

Okay, quick recap for those not in the know. Also, I do think the thread not only got locked but deleted before I even saw it. Here's the rub.
Generally speaking, lots of people go out of their way to help other collectors on the board get items here and there free of charge. They do this because they hope someone will do the same for them later on. This works pretty well. If you try it you might be surprised at how well it works. We have been calling it toy kharma for as long as I can remember. Basically, if you help your fellow collector looking for stuff, he (or she) will do the same for you. It's all about being polite to each other, we are building a community of collectors together not in a vacuum.
Another problem, is that we aren't going to let people gobble up and buy more than one of any toy unless it is sunday. Sorry, there has to be enough to go around regardless of how true your intentions are. Therefore, your order holders will be very disappointed. As you point out, people pay a grip to get to SDCC, so they deserve to have a shot at some of the toys once there. We aren't selling toys to fund people's trips to SDCC, there are Star Wars figures for that. We assume you are coming to SDCC for fun and enjoyment, not business. And we are there to have fun with you.
So, when you do this, as reasonable as it may sound to you, we are all "friends" here, so you wouldn't do that to your friends would you? That is what will get you pounced on. Hopefully that explains it.

Hi Playdoh. I honestly don't think it's as personal as all that, although it probably seems that way to you right now. If it helps for perspective, bear in mind that the passion here is one of the things that the community prides itself on, and that sometimes views are stated vehemently to keep it real, keep it underground, and generally "RFSO." The issue isn't you personally or your respectable qualities, it's that people here tend to do one another favors without financial compensation other than toy and shipping costs. Favors come back to people in the form of returned favors, testimonials about good trades and sales, that sort of thing. People actually lose money on a lot of the helpful things they do for one another here on the principle that it's all about true collecting and collectors as opposed to for-profit enterprise. At least that's what I've seen during my active time here. I've done trade deals where the other party sent me more than I was expecting, and have tried to do the RFSO thing in turn by selling items for less than I paid because it seemed like the right thing to do, or asking for less than what was publicly requested in some cases. That's the kind of Real Fan Shit Only ethic that works best here and makes this place exceptional. For my part, it's clear that you intended no harm ... it's all about perspective and perception. I hope I'm not making things worse or coming across pretentiously here as I'm not exactly an OG member, but ... like Robert implied with his photo ... try to make lemonade of this but don't let it be too bitter. Tomorrow's another day and if someone is harsh on you now, they may come to chill and be friendly in the future. I think it takes some time to earn trust around here but it can be done for sure.
EDIT: Oops, cross-post with Mr. Flynn.

I personally don't think what Playdohpunk did was ABSOLUTELY wrong. I'm sure some of us on this board appreciate the help even with a little fee since not all can attend SDCC and not all of us are willing to pay double the price from flippers.
Some however will find it offensive that u're charging a fee when you're offering to help so it feels as though u're taking advantage of the situation. Especially if you're not a legit business and openly declaring you want profit will certainly spark a few plugs. Celga is a business that consumers seek and not the other way around.
Just don't take it personally. Words are always harsher online.

thanks brian, thanks xoco...FYI i've only been taking orders for one item each, two if i have a friend with. sorry if i stepped on some toes, i didn't mean to, nor, as i pointed out did i think i was gonna "profit" offa this and yes, people would have offered me a lot more, (i've done this before), what happens then is it becomes a bidding war, which is going on now over on KR, where people rent themseves out to the highest bidder to pick up stuff,,,i figured by capping it, it would stop that from happeneing. The people who have asked for my "assistance" have got it....there's not all that much i am seeking this year so it's pretty conflict free.
and is that what robert was implying? i missed that one.

Only the Jar-Jar lollipop thing. I am not kidding. There really was a Jar-Jar toy where you had to pull his tongue out so that you could suck on it. If someone actually wants to buy that, by all means, flip it.

yeah, i thought it was pretty cool to see that in the issue. i think this is about as "original" as you can get from him... it is on tracing paper, but still labor intensive, expensive, and cool (IMO). i'm pretty sure he'll have a table this year again with a bunch of these laid out.
hey. i think it's ok to flip star wars stuff... they make thousands of them and you see people leave with cases and cases of the stuff (what i got was nothing)

Here's a cynical hint though - it's OK to use 2006 SDCC exclusive toys to finance this year's trip. Remember to plan ahead!

I only know a few folks here but Playdoh has always been a good guy to me. Given that you should know that this is an actual community and the place to make a buck is that other place.
