How does he manage to get away with it without the McD suits cease-and-desisting his hiney? They put a tiny little vegetarian place in Santa Cruz out of business for calling itself "McDharma's." Maybe the Clown finally got a sense of humor?

I hope so. Ideally in a "free country" that should be good enough, but you know how big bad corporate money can change things. Maybe that's why The Mouse and Michelin haven't bitten KAWS too. Groenig probably collects KAWS. :-)

for art transformed into a toy thing
quality & sculpt is secondary to me
as art concept behind it still strong.
and as turtletooth mentioned in the goga thread
figure captures the feel of the character pretty well
& weak quality of figure reflects u.s. not to bad with its wider blackouts,
steam explosion in the streets and collapsing bridges.
(dont get me wrong not trying to make fun of victims
and still jelaus not living over there! ...period)

to me buff monsters is a pretty tight line of a minimal style toy - fun.
or maybe do i only like em because they look like my favorite
candy - chocolate marshmallows??? ...dont know.

its too...I guess 'normal' looking? I like the McDonkey one a lot better. This is just like...too well sculpted...like its just not weord enough.

I cant really explain it. I know Ron and LOVE his paintings but i dont think they translate into toys, at least not at this level of 'just like the painting'.

I have to agree - I really loved his "art terrorism" stuff, because that seemed quite risky and exciting. This seems much more safe, somehow. Like shooting fish in a barrel (to coin a very overdone phrase).

I liked this "anti consumerism" toy until I bought the 7th one. Whoops.

I do like the metal versions.

+1......thats exactly it. the whole point of this toy was to blast consumerism and big business etc etc....but lets keep making different colourways to take "advantage" of the consumer and essentially ruin the message the piece is trying to portray.

anti consumerism is cool, if you like living in a hole in the ground eating turnips all winter.

"Capitalism for good or ill is the river in which we sink or swim, and stocks the supermarket." - Gary Panter, The Rozz-Tox Manifesto

Maybe the figure is broadly anti-consumerism, or maybe it's just a comment on how consumerism as so well-exemplified by McDonald's is all-encompassing and ultimately unhealthy. I saw the thing as riding the wave of consciousness-raising brought about by the movie of the similar title and the preceding book "Fast Food Nation." While there may be something to the general idea that "too many colorways" is fan-gouging, there's also the fact that even one edition is non-biodegradable and mildly toxic. :-) If English really wanted to make an anti-consumerist statement, he wouldn't have made a vinyl toy at all, but would rather have done something "green" as "art." Such is the use of irony in post-postmodern times. You can use it to justify anything.

I don't see how the figure has anything to say about tragic accidents or their causes being essentially American.

Ironically, McDonalds, in the form Of Founder Ray Kroc's widow,is not only one of the largest Charities for Children (Ronald McDonald House) but she consistently was the largest contributor to anti-nuclear prolifertion charities and organizations, year after year after year.

The food is unhealthy, but so is any food if you eat it 8 times a day.

on the flip side, McDonalds was relatively inexpensive and offerred many many people their first job.

I can see both sides of the coin.

PLUS their fries USED to be awesome, until all the PC nuts made them change the recipe.

Yeah even Julia Child said they were better when McD used lard. :-)

I dont get it. He is promoting anti consumerism, anti corporates destroying the environment... yet he produces toys to entice consuming and also uses plastics like there is no tomorrow.

Don't get me wrong, I really love his messages... and I get off on the Ad Busters stuff... but when I see his merch.. I get confused.

See thats the whole thing. I am a capitalist at heart and promote a free economy, hey you know what make as many designs colourways you want.....simple supply and demand. However, when the main message behind this piece becomes null and void it loses its effectiveness and everything it stands for.

Is it worth sacrificing your message/what you believe in for some extra bucks essentially?
