Well, seeing as I have a lull at work right now here's a story:

Best Metal Shows:

1. (Altho I classified this as hardcore at the time): Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror/Bolt Thrower/Electro Hippies/+ someone I can't recall. University of London Union around 1990 or 91. This was filmed for a BBC Arena doc on metal as well. The audience participation was by far the best part...mass stage diving, disclocated limbs, stage covered in water from extinguishers being let off, fizzing electrical equipment and seeing a gay psychobilly aquaintance of mine getting all over sweaty metal/hardc ore skaters in the pit...hee heee

2. Monsters of Rock 1984: Motley Crue, Original line-up VanHalen and AC/DC were the winners. High Points: Backstage pass, seeing Cronos from Venom in thigh length docs and meeting lots of bands (Not VH or AC/DC..they had their own areas). Low points: Flying bottles of PISS, skinheads and being nearly killed when I was leaving after being jumped by a group of psycho wanna-bee biker types, who got a thrill out of mangling a 9- pound long haired teenager. I was in bed for two weeks recovering. Still an amazing show.

3. Altho not metal, but in the day it was. First KISS show in 1983 with teh tank that drove around teh stage.

4. First ever metal show (ok, HARD rock, but back then...): Richie Balcmore's Rainbow with Rose Tattoo: 1981 in Leeds.

5. Motorhead at Hammersmith Odeon in 1983...think it was teh No Sleep tour finale. Insane seated venue mayhem ensued after Lemmy vehemently encouraged teh balcony people to come downstairs....and security was powerless to stop teh ooslaught.

6. Twisted Sister at Hammersmith, 1984. Being stuck upside down between row two and three after jumping across seat backs was scary, but all worth it when I got clsoe enuf to scream "Iam, I'm me" into Dee's mic!!!!

7. Seeing various shows by 'maiden, Scorpions and Def Leppard at Hammersmith Odeon.

GOOD TIMES!!!

Maiden and Kiss are two totally different animals.

Agree. I was just saying they're the two bands that least matched my expectations based on their imagery.
I listen to Maiden occaisionally, but I don't listen to KISS at all.

if we are going metal and not hardcore, i'd have to say meshuggah in the mid 90's right after "destroy, erase, improve" came out. they were just solid as a rock when they played and i was dumbfounded that they could play that shit so tightly. i also remember the guitarist had some sort of acky contraption going from his mouth to the guitar that would tweek the sound. fuckin' nuts.

Hair bands

Worst era of music in the history of the world Carl.

Reminds me of all those "Punkers" that grew their hair out and got into that crap because the chicks were "looser".
I still want to kill them all.
Fucking sellout twats.;)

Plus you have to figure I was stuck in high school, having to fight those hair dickwads every day. Effin' tanktops and bozo-tent-pants.

Can you tell I'm fighting bitter.

Lol, I hear you Paul! Coming form that background I understand it.

The funny thing is, I have always had eclectic tastes. Now that is de riguer, but years ago it wasn't. Consequently, I have always ended up havng to listen to people tell me that something or other I like sucks, whereas I generally can find common ground where our tastes overlap. Altho saying that, I actually got into a fight with some old friends when I was singing teh praises of Psychocandy and they insisted that Dire Straits ruled and that teh J&M Chain were talentless twats! They wanted to fight me over it as I woiudln't back down!

Anyway, I'm sure you above a lot of people here might dig my RFSO mix...check it out, and lmk what u think. It's mostly INDIE - one of the least popular genre's on teh board...or is it just that the metal heads are louder?

So despite coming form a rock background I adore pop (Abba to Fountains of Wayne), glam (Hanoi Rocks and The Sweet to the Living Things) indie (The Shins rock MY world) metal (you know I LOVE teh Sword and all teh old skool stuff) and electronic (Orbital have put on some of teh best live shows I have ever seen) . I don't dig jazz, or hip hop too much, but I gave it a shot and saw the Pharcyde, GangStarr and De La Soul years ago. De La I liked best of all I guess.

The good thing about teh VH1 show I watched is that it covered so much pre-80's stuff like Priest and Rose Tattoo - guess it tweaked some memories ... and made me start this thread :)

If u asked me what my favorite non-metal/hard rock shows are I'd be hard pressed to list them because their have been so many of em!

That album is not glam metal at all. It also received a glowing review in Kerrang back in the day.
