This is pretty serious, though. Who do the Chinese execute for this one?

It's getting hazardous to buy anything from China lately. Remember that auto tire recall a few months back? Defective sidewalls so the tires were blowing out and a couple people died from the subsequent accidents.

Can't be too careful.

Have you read Mark Nagata's article in Kai Zine about the potential toxicity of vinyl kaiju? It has that strong smell for a reason.

I like his attitude ... basically "I'll live with the risk." :-)

Dude, I live in New Jersey.

My toys are most likely the least toxic thing I encounter all day.

Hah great answer turtletooth. Yeah, I'm more worried about the fact that my landlord claims "we know nothing, NOTHING about whether or not there's asbestos in your ceiling!" On warm days I can smell the vinyl toys in my home, and I kinda like it. Go! Unstable vinyl molecules! Go!

On a more serious note, I saw some pictures from toy stores where all the recalled toys had been removed. Amazing ... empty shelf after empty shelf. Some Chinese officials are playing the recent toxic product recalls off as politics and xenophobia. The politics contention may be partially true, but when it comes to child safety, who cares what the catalyst was?

please post a link to the pics.

In all seriousness some financial analyst think there might be a lot more recalls. Furthermore, since 80% of toys in the US come from China and most Christmas toys were made before the big toy companies started paying attention kids in the US might really get a lump of coal (or lead coated plastic) this year. Kind of a bummer really.

I'd say it's worth it for kids to go without toys for one Christmas if the toy makers are going to be subjected to further scrutiny, hopefully resulting in safer toys for the next Christmas.

I was talking to a couple of people in the Japanese toy industry the other day about this fiasco and they say that nobody here is surprised. There's a stereotype regarding Chinese manufacturers that they'd gladly melt down a school bus with the kids in it to save 5 cents on metal. This incident definitely fit the mold, so to speak.

All of these things: the tainted wheat gluten, faulty tires, the deaths from the toothpaste, capacitor plague, the toxic toys, etc. should really make us think twice about who we're entrusting the majority of our manufacturing to these days, and how to prevent this from happening again.

That's ridiculous Roger. The Chinese would never do that!

Those kids would be valuable factory workers.

I would be happy to if I had any recollection of where I saw them. I tend to scan many, many news sites every day including aggregate sites like Google News and Drudge. If you're skeptical, I suppose it's possible that someone used a stock photo to illustrate the story (as Drudge does in a particularly insidious and slanted manner,) however it was my impression that what I saw were indeed photos of shelves depleted by the current recalls.

Sorry man, I saw what I said I did but don't remember where.

For context it might bear mentioning that not all Mattel products being recalled are due to toxic parts from China. Some are being recalled for Mattel's own design flaws, namely "small magnets."

Yeah... it would cost way more than 5 cents to smelt all those kids down for the metal anyway.

If my toys smelled a quarter as strong as my Dead Presidents paint, I'd be worried. I swear I get a contact high every time I walk by the sealed box.
