iPod Touch will eventually have greater capacity, but in the meantime, 16GB flash ain't bad! Obviously a problem that Apple faces is that they don't manufacture their own flash memory, so this increases their per-unit cost dramatically. People considering buying one might alternately consider the amazing increase in capacity for the new "classic" iPods. The advantages of the Touch models are cool, and the form enjoys the same attractiveness as the iPhone, but the feature set is not necessarily what most users really want in their iPods. So, the choice is between having the super-cool toy with lower capacity and more features, or the more essential iPod with larger capacity than most users will ever really need.
Great stuff. Now it'll be interesting to see what the Fall computer releases entail.

So long as I can fit a season or two of Venture Bros. for me to take to the gym, I'll be happy.

it will be a while until the iPod touch has storage comparable to the other iPods, the reason being the "touch" uses flash memory while the "classics" use hard drives...
flash memory being like the cards in digital cameras the benefit is there are no moving parts making the iPods more durable to drops...
16gb flash is about the biggest available at the moment

The iPhone 8GB also dropped $200.00 off its original price as well as the 4GB model will be discontinued

this is the most surprising news. Apple basically charged people $20 a week for buying the product at its launch (10 weeks ago). That is expensive hip.
I wonder if you can stream audio from the itouch over ip. If would be amazing if you could.

jawkdna you hit the nail on the head. I believe higher capacity flash exists but would be ridiculously expensive to implement in the iPods for now. It's hard enough for the company to keep costs as "low" as they are now. To complicate matters, some flash makers, most notably Sandisk, are now making their own flash players, and have an easier time keeping storage costs lower for obvious reasons. Apple's got the top brain trust when it comes to simplicity of interface, and delivering the features that people really want and use the most. I wish they'd implement on-board FM radio reception and recording, but the feeling at Apple is that most consumers don't think of that as an especially important feature.
Has anyone tried recording in stereo on a fifth generation iPod? It works really well, and iTunes makes it easy to do some basic recording editing. You can even use the Belkin mic to do direct inline recordings from analog media. I know a dude who ripped some of his vinyl and cassettes to digital this way.

This isn't exactly the case
after a company sells X amount of product the cost of producing more of that product is cheaper...
the second pressing of an LP is cheaper than the first...
So either Apple could keep charging more (which some would say is profiteering) or they could charge less (which people who have already paid the hirer price will be pissed) either way people are angry, but if they reduce the price more people are buying...
AND
I rip alot of my vinyl with the griffin iMic...
works fucking awesome

Never saw the sense in buying an IPOD. MP3s can be played on nearly everything these days, and flash memory cards are dirt cheap. I use my PSP as my MP3Man.

All true. However, it has only been 10 weeks so it cost you $20 a week to own this phone since the release no matter how you look at it.
I have been buying apple products for a long time, the apple IIe was my 1st. I learned a long time ago not to be an early adopter with apple products. I assume a lot of other people just learned this lesson too.

Possibly good timing for me as my iPod will not turn off. Detached from my work computer last evening, tried to turn it off and nothing happened. Remembered it after dinner and it still wouldn't turn off - and the battery had nearly drained in the 4 hours it had been since I left work. I bought it in May.
Here's hoping for a new 160gb iPod!
Now, will Apple be able to transfer the music from my current iPod to a new iPod if that's their way of "fixing" the problem? I stripped nearly all my music off my computer once I transferred it to my iPod - keeping only the albums I didn't sell to a record store. I really don't want to have to go back and put all my music on my computer again...

Hey NT
did you try "reseting" the iPod by toggling the hold swith and then holding down the MENU and CENTER button for up to 10 seconds...
that may fix your iPod if it doesn't trying doing a "restore" from iTunes...
Apple won't transfer your music from your ipod to a new ipod (as music is meant to be left in your iTunes)...
but you can with programs...
Versiontracker.com is a great place to look just search from
"music from iPod"

Thanks! I think...
I'm now able to turn it off. And I guess I'd rather keep my iPod than have to put all my music back onto my computer. I was kinda hoping to score a new iPod though. But I'm still concerned that my battery drained in a matter of 4 hours...

Were you watching video in that 4 hours, 'cause if so, 4 hrs is pretty amazing.
But if you have an older iPod you probably weren't.
The new Nanos must have an incredibly short battery life if you watch video on them. I know it is flash memory and thus, less power consumption, but the screen size and the tiny form factor still make me think this thing will be good for 60-80 minutes tops.
