This has to be some sort of evil joke right? I played the shit out of that game when I was younger, have been a part of numerous gaming communities and such in the past, and I've never even heard about this until. Mind has been blown.

Well, in a sense, yes. I'm gonna try to do my best to shy away from a piracy discussion, but -- I'm not sure how much you might know about emulators so I'll be kind of thorough. You can play classic and even recent arcade games on your computer. Think of an emulator as the console, the ROM as a 'game.' ROMs are technically illegal unless you own the actual game you are playing, but who abides by those rules. Anyway, since it's on your computer, people have figured out ways to go in and edit code to do what they want. In this case, it could have been to set up that stage to flow seamlessly without any effort. In other cases (most notably Japanese RPGs), people translate Japanese text into English and release the translated ROM for other people to play.

I'm not going to link directly to anything out of respect for the S7 crew not having any association with piracy web sites, but doing a search for "rom hacks" pulls up some more information as well as examples.

Edit: I've noticed some pretty weird things in these videos. Something spelled out in kanju on the sky (using the platform wires), what looks like the outline of a coiled turd made out of brown blocks, Yoshi's egg saying "Fuck you!" etc.
