Post Giant GID Kanegon!

Images from 'Hyper Hobby'.
This is in some lucky guy's collection.

All I can make out is it was not made for retail but as a promo item for stores,
which was the same as the blue one I think.

The blue one is pictured in 'Hyper Hobby Dash 6'
and they had one in 'Hobbit' in Shinjuku for yonks.
(They finally sold it, though not to me - bastards!)
A couple of Skullbrainers are proud owners too,
and they do very occasionally come up for sale.
Anyway, I reckon that one came out around '97-'99
... but I have NEVER seen this version before!

Actually, given the choice (LOL), I would still take the blue,
but I'm just wondering ... WHEN was this GID one released?
Anyone know?

I can't help with the information you're looking for Alice but as a trivia point, I believe there was one of those sitting in Kazuho Mitsuta's home when he was interviewed by John Ross for Japanorama. Unsurprisingly, the director had an awesome kaiju collection.

OMFG! That thing can probably light up a whole rumpus room when he's fully charged.

I agree - i like the blue color better but I'm also picturing how incredibly cool it would be to see a 4' hunk of vinyl glowing in my living room at night - or what it would look like under a black light.

That's the glow version of the M1GO giant Kanegon. I had no idea there were any assembled, painted, and out there!

I'd only seen one as parts in a box up until this point. It was explained to me that the figure had to be filled with some sort of a fiberglass foam to prevent it from deforming and cracking when fully assembled, and that you could see it through the glow vinyl (this wasn't a problem with the blue).

I was told that Yuji didn't like the result, and so wasn't mass-producing them. But I guess at least a couple made it into peoples' collections.

I believe the regular blue Kanegons are still available on a special order basis, and they run about 100,000 yen or so (don't quote me on that).

I'm sure the inside surfaces of the body parts could have been coated in a primer to give an opaque backing so the foam wouldn't show through. I wouldn't let that minor detail keep something that awesome from being produced.

That was the filing set of some kiddie idol TV show here in Japan, the actors somehow end up in a "friends shop" and it just happens to be an Ultra Q only shop. Fuck, I want to go there.

I have not heard any definite news about release either. Roger should know more than the rest of us though so I trust him! :D

That sounds right, after all it does take a lot of effort to produce those things, and I'm sure that their factory won't make just one.

I'll be in contact with M1GO in a couple of weeks, so if you guys want I'll pester them for more info about pricing, ordering, etc.

Will do.

I'll say up front, though, that they'll probably reply that they can't sell to people outside of Japan because of their licensing agreement. However, that doesn't mean they can't sell it to someone in Japan that you know.

I'd go in on this too. If Frank wants a few, Scud80 wants one, I'll take 1 we only need a few more to hit 10. Maybe Garadama's shop buddy will take a couple. Is there's enough interest to do a release? If these were shipped unassembled it would sure help the cost a lot. Shipping one of these fully assembled costs as much as the figure! Roger - what do you think?

Or how about a release of the blue ones unassembled? I'd actually prefer blue anyway, and 100,000 yen is cool, but with $1500 shipping it's just too much. If you could get these into peoples hands for $1000 or less shipped I bet there would be some interest! I'll wager you could get 10-15 prepaid subscribers anyway. Damn, there go the hopes again!

Mmm, seems like there is hope we can get a GID version. Let me go to the shop today and see if he's there first (only he will be staying a week here and he will be back to japan for accompanying his japanese gf)
And let him know there is a need of the giant GID kanegon. See what's the minimum order he can placed, the price, shipping and so on.....
