Me, too, I've heard good and bad stuff about it, but who am I kidding? I'll be there on opening day.

Hope it's better than Land of the Dead. I don't want to see hordes of Zombies evolving into complex societies. I wanna see evil, brain eating zombies.

I was almost expecting to hear 'One Tin Soldier' in the last scene of Land of the Dead.

Yeah, Land of the Dead stunk on ice. It's too bad, because John Leguizamo gives the best performance of any actor in a Romero film, and it's stuck in that turd pile.

i have seen some good reviews on this but from places like bloody disgusting and they never give nagative reviews aicn has had good and (very) bad, to be honest it sounds pretty bad, and if we are all honest romero hasn't made a good film for 20 years ....
i mean i know he virtually invented the modern zombie movie, but i cant forgive him for lotd or knightriders if i'm truthful.
I'll check this on dvd but his best days a way behind him.

I wanted to make it to Toronto to see this, but unfortunately couldn't (I was there about a week and a half before and couldn't make a second trip).

pros:

- it's an indie production again, no studio meddling
- supposedly shot in a different style for George, with lots of long single camera shots, like Hitchcock's Rope
- supposedly loops around and is set on the night which the original NOTLD takes place

cons:

- I think GR hasn't done anything good in years, it seems as though he may have joined the ranks of those horror directors who have lost their touch

- indie film budget might actually make it look cheap

- story apparently is from more of a zombie perspective (sounds pretty dumb to me. I don't really care/want to know what a zombie is thinking. the only thing they should be thinking about is eating brains)

- personally, I don't really want/need another zombie film, even if it's from Romero. I'm from the school of thought in which the more characters/backstory/mythos you try to add to something, the more convoluted and silly it gets (ex. Star Wars, Halloween, etc.) I think we all know sequels are rarely as good as original/earlier efforts and can often "ruin" a series when tacked on way too late. I was good with the 3 solid Dead movies, shoulda stuck with that.

I agree on ALL of those points. But at least Land of the Dead made me laugh, especially the ending where they just let Big Daddy go.....so sweet.

I think Land of the Dead would have been better than it is, but George got screwed on production values and had to cut a lot of scenes he originally had intended to be in there.

that said, I do think the story was trying way too hard to be overtly political, where as the other films did a good job of conveying a message underneath the surface of a horror film.

Roger has suggested that a better ending would have been Big-Daddy getting shot in the head in that final scene, echoing the scene in NOTLD where the survivng guy gets shot by the rednecks at the end.

I know this new movie will probably suck, but I'll take my zombies where I can get them. Does anyone know when this will get released to it's assumed 'limited market'?

And Bub had an explanation for using a gun: he was being "conditioned" by the doctor and regaining his previous memories. There was no explanation for Big Daddy's proficiency with firearms.

that's true. It's been a loong time since I've seen that film.

I actually HATE when Bub uses the damned gun. "Day..."' is more of a joke to me. There's some OK stuff in it, but ugh.....it just can't live up to the prior two, and I can't say I cared for anything Romero did after it anyway.

I liked LOTD. You're right tho. I preffer simple NON RUNNING beautifully rotting, not necessarily evil (they can't help being re-animated and hungry for living flesh), eats anything with a pulse ZOMBIES.

Knowing me (a zombie flick whore) I'll prolly see it anyway.

During the Q&A afterwards, Romero said that Day is the favorite out of his zombie movies (although he thinks Martin and Knightriders are much better).

I like Day a lot, but I would have loved to have seen the version he originally scripted. Check out the DVD, it's available on there as a PDF.

I agree, though, it's the last good movie he made. Ever see Bruiser? Yecch.

Romero was on Opie and Anthony yesterday and someone brought up 28 Days Later. He said that he liked those movies, but they're not zombies, they're just sick people.

(He could have been a real stickler and called them out for being Crazies, but I think he was being diplomatic.)

I saw him speak in Chicago a few years back, my wife straight up asked "Why did you create Bub?" and he went on about it and the ideas and I get it and all, but it takes away what makes Zombies so damned cool to me. It's like sometimes less is more, and I think he over-thought Zombies.

Yeah, I guess that's true. The infected are not technically Zombies, in the NOTLD sense.

However, I consider any dead guy who tries to take a bite out of me to be a Zombie.

After all, Romero's Zombies aren't true Zombies either. They are reanimated dead folks. Real Zombies are unfortunate Haitians who have been drugged with blow fish poison and buried alive until they suffer brain damage.

I don't LOTD wasn't that bad. Geez. Yes I prefer slow moving unthinking purposeful (by that i mean the one thing they do know how to do attack and eat) zombies. BUT LOTD had it's moments. Not his best film though.

I'm pretty anxious to see Diary of the Dead. I heard somewhere that it's only getting a very limited release and some west coast theaters are upset with Weinstein for doing that. I'm sure it means Buffalo will not get this anytime soon.

Just finished ready Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z by Max Brooks. Awesome books. I finished WWZ in a week, I couldn't put it down. I hear this is going to be a movie as well.

Romero got hung up on the idea that he was portraying the rise of the zombies as the evolution of a new society. He admits the idea was cribbed from Richard Matheson's I Am Legend, but he seems to think that he pulled that off in his movies. He really didn't.I love these books, too. Currently the movie is being developed at Paramount. J. Michael Straczynski delivered a script for it and they're looking for the right director.

Romero was asked about Brooks' books at the Q&A. He said they're not his thing. Too straight-faced. (That's sort of the point, George.)
