Old Navy sells reasonably priced blue fart filters.

Allows for more toy spendage.

for casual wear I stick to Carhardt welders pants and rip-stop poplin BDU's.

both are inexpensive, comfortable in any situation and last for decades. In fact, I still have a pair of BDU pants that I was issued in the military 28 years ago. damn things are indestructible.

same pair of jeans. One worn the other basically "MIB".

I wore these 100's of times before the 1st wash. Lots of starch and febreze to keep them looking and smelling kinda clean.

To be honest the markets and consumers for fancy jeans and fancy toys are really different from my experience. One interesting fact is Evisu and Secret Base were in the same small alley in Tokyo before SB moved.

I know more about denim than I care to admit.

At the end Lisa made me take them off when I got home. She was afraid I would make the couch stinky if I sat on it. They even had their own drawer.

The pair I am breaking in now are 18oz denim the fuckers are so stiff it hurts my thumbs to push the button through the wholes.

i've been thinking about getting a new pair. i pretty much recycle two pairs of levi's throughout the work week. im leaning towards a pair of edwins. any other suggestions?

I have 3 pairs of black jeans I bought from Target (I think) that I've owned for like 3 years. I might buy a new pair soon.

Wallmart is now selling a special spray that you can apply to your stinking jeans so you can wear them as long as you want (with or without a clean change of undergarments) so as not to offend people around you. My guess is it probably just Febreeze.

Wallmart also sells a special fabric "softener" that you can spray on your jeans that you have starched so that they aren't so stiff.

What's the point?

Why not just wear clean clothes that are nice and soft (comfortable), smell good, and don't break your thumbs when trying to put them on?

Homer never changes pants. He's been wearing the same pair of blue pants for almost 20 years.

Though he does take them off surprisingly frequently for being a cartoon character!

because once they are broken in they feel great. A few weeks of pain and then you have a 2nd skin made of denim.

I don't understand why people want poorly made clothing.

Interesting, interesting, interesting...

I have no fashion sense, and it shows. Most of the non-work stuff I wear comes from Old Navy because it's relatively plain looking and comfortable. Looking a little deeper into my preferences and habits, I can see a pattern that when it comes to things that serve the essential needs in my life, like a car, cookware, clothing, etc. I usually settle on things that are functional and reliable, and I usually stray away from things that are flashy, or status symbols, etc.

(And even if you haven't met me or been driven around in my Saturn to see what I'm describing, by now you have seen my no-frills indestructible coffee table, so you probably get the picture. I plan on using that for at least another 100 years, so get used to it. ;p)

On the other hand, when it comes to luxury items that really serve no function except for making me happy that I own them, like toys, artwork, books written in a language I can't read, etc., usually price and difficulty in obtaining these things are no object (and to be fair, some of these things are flashy or are status symbols in their own way, although I don't think I seek them out because they are as such).

So I can't see myself buying $200 jeans, much less $1200 jeans, even if they were really amazing and would serve me in everyday life. I could definitely see myself buying a $200 Scopedog toy, because it was a really good Scopedog toy, even though it would spend most of the time in a box in the closet.

I have spent serious money on suits for going to the opera and custom made motorcycle clothes, but for normal every day life all my clothes just get supertrashed between motorcycling, painting, gleing, sanding,hauling shit around etc.

makes no sense to buy any sort of fahion stuff. t shirts, carhardts and military pants. cheap, durable and stealthy.

Yeah, even though I am a pacifist at heart I really enjoy the hell out of the military clothing and gear I've gotten. The army-issue pocket knife I have has outlasted any other tool I've ever had, and even though I am officially uncool for wearing an M-65, with the liner it is the warmest winter jacket I will probably ever own. Again, function winning me over and pushing form aside.

(Most of my robots are military-styled machines, too. I really am a walking contradiction.)

The sad thing is the whole denim thing started because Levis had sold or mothballed all their original looms and stopped making good denim. Most of the working looms ended up in Japan. Companies started by making Levis bootlegs to fill the demand for well made unwash denim. Now those same companies make crappy denim too.

When it started it was more anti-fashion than fashionable. In 2001-2002 wearing dark blue unfaded jeans wasn't "cool". You had to wear that pre-torn crap to be cool. When I was breaking in those Jeans above my friends gave me so much shit.

The expensive denim fads will come and go but there is a large group of people that like unwashed selvage denim with little to no branding (markings on the pocket).



You probably were, Desiel makes most of their denim at exactly the same factories that walmart (use to). You were basically paying for the fancy fades and wearing.



Frank, I actually seriously considered doing this but was told it was insensitive.

If you want really great denim for a fair price from a company that is ecofriendly look into APC. You really can't beat their products. If you ever take the time to break in a pair of jeans on your own you won't ever wear anything else.

or maybe I just want to be a cowboy.

...so how often should you wash these jeans?

I sometimes wash mine inside out to preserve the color.

I have a fashion sense, but I draw certain lines. I'm not going to buy Armani or anything else ridiculously priced, but there are certain clothing companies are reasonably and make one look sharp. Also subtle things like a good pair of shoes or an unusual watch can go far.

I appreciate industrial design so I have some cool cookware and utensils etc.
I see furniture as sculpture so I have some Eames and Corbusier. It just looks cool and is different than regular junk even if if its more expensive.

But I drive a shitbox VW because i live in the city and it will only continue to get dinged up. I also don't want to pay high insurance premiums to insure a 2006 car.

I avoid flashy or status symbols.
