Gotta see that Miike fiilm! Cowboys with Samurai swords is brilliant given how the Samurai and Western genres influenced one another.

Yeah, it was a ton of fun. It is not in any way as out there gory as Gazu, Audition, or even Ichi the Killer, however as a Western, it was quite good. The leader of the White gang is crazy. Of course there are the obligatory sword slicing a speeding bullet in half scenes, but there are great moments of subtlety, like Miike quoting Orpheus and Eurydice at a moment late in the film. Think less scary movie, and more shawn of the dead. His love and respect for the Western genre is quite evident throughout the film. A turning point, perhaps?
If you want wild gore, Dario Argento's Mother of Tears served it up in spades, though the movie as a whole was more Suspiria than Deep Red.

Does this mean its a masterpiece as opposed to sort of a really well filmed slasher film?
Its the end of the trilogy and has huge potential; it'd be great to see Dario making incredible movies again.

Unfortunately, it is bad, and not in a good way. The film starts off with a bang with goblin-style monsters strangling a museum intern with her own entrails while simultaneously displaying a shrieking baboon, however the film's acting soon goes to porno levels, and by the end you are left with what seems like a really bad Cinemax after dark movie. It was the only film at the festival I can recall where noone clapped after the film. And this was at Midnight Madness.

Yeah, I was really excited to see it. It played at the same time as Diary of the Dead, which I heard was a racuous showing.

I got to see the first couple of minutes at Chiller this past weekend. The person who showed it to me thought it sucked, and the person he got it from (who actually worked on the film) felt the same, but I liked what I saw.

If I had just seen the first few minutes of the film, I would have felt exactly the same way. The unearthing of the coffin, and the whole Museum of Rome murder and chase scenes were superb, however Asia Argento's character then proceeds to spend the rest of the movie going from friend's house to friend's house trying to escape the evil creatures, and at every stop she has the same dumb animal look (think Will Farrell) on her face when she is shocked that inexplicably the supernatural being was able to find her. The gory scenes are not even laughably bad. However, If one ever wondered what the guy who asked Jody Foster whether she ever made it with a knife was thinking of in The Brave One, you do not have to look any further than this film to find out.

I should have been clearer, I actually saw the first couple of minutes of Diary of the Dead. From the people you talked to who saw it, was the overall feeling about it positive or negative?

The couple we talked to while exiting the theatre said they had a blast, which was in stark contrast to the frowns my friend and I were wearing. However, that is really the extent to what I heard about the film. If you check rotten tomatoes I think the film is in the 60's and the Mother of Tears is at 100%, though with only 9 reviews. Seriously, the reviewers must have seen a different film than the one I saw, or perhaps is the result of fandom. Really mind boggling!
