What music trips your memory and what memory does it invoke?

OK. This is not necessarily (at all) your favorite music, but I am talking about music that "trips" or "jogs" your memory about specific incidents or events in your life.

For just one example, the "Rod Stewart Album" VERY specifically reminds me always (for some reason) of driving downtown (in my sort of lime-green yellow Opel GT with my baby - who I later married - all of which is irrelevant to my inquiry) towards the Zoo, but we stopped on our way and had our very first, ever burritto (we both thought the burritto wrapping was some kind of paper at first - this was 1973)...

Point: I hear the music, and I am transported to again driving down the street again towards the zoo but stop and eat my first burrito with my lover.

This is but one example of how hearing a certain song, or album, triggers memories that would otherwise be long lost.

--whenever i hear any song off duran duran's seven and the ragged tiger i think about this old gray tapedeck i used to have and playing this little tabletop pacman game that i still have

--the song mayonaise by smashing pumpkins really makes me think of an ex girlfriend and driving around with her in the middle of the night with the windows down

--the song black hole sun by soundgarden makes me think of the same ex getting nailed in the shower by another guy

Fuck,that some strong shit pickle,had a woman run me off tha road one time and I hit a tree head on in a MG miget,when I came to the only thing I can remember was the rolling stones "I can't get no satisfaction" playing on the radio,I'll never forget that as long as I live...

I remember David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars after driving away from a beach public access... I had been parked there sleeping in my car waiting for my friend to come out of the sand dunes... I heard a car crunching on the gravel coming up next to me... it was a sheriff... searched my car completely... didn't find anything ... said they were looking for naked people on the beach... left... I went and drove around for awhile and listened to David Bowie... will always remember that "moment."

"(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult. I was being put under deep sedation at a hospital and it was playing on the radio in the room. I remember thinking about how ironic it was to hear that tune, especially after a previous night's conversation about excessive insurance rates for anesthesiologists. I just fell asleep, then later when I awoke, I felt like I lost time or something.

Some off the top of my head:

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower -- My dad's favorite song.

Buckethead - Welcome to Bucketheadland -- My dad bought the import of this from a local Royal Oak record store for me back in the early 90's for over $30. I thought that was a huge amount of money for a piece of music at the time.

Cat Stevens - Teaser and the Firecat -- Reminds me of being very young and my dad playing the LP. I thought the cover art was so cool.

Jimmy Cliff - Cliff Hanger -- Reminds me of playing the tape in the car while camping with my dad in various places in Michigan.

Sly & Robbie - Rhythm Killers -- " "

The Eagles - anything -- Again, reminds me of my dad. We saw Glenn Frey perform a solo show at some Detroit music festival.

Atreyu - The Remembrance Ballad -- I'm sure you can guess.

Chiodos - anything -- Reminds me of living alone, breaking up with my then girlfriend in probably the worst way, probably the lowest time of my life.

Watch Them Die / Soilent Green / The Black Dahlia Murder / Clutch / etc. -- Going to shows with my old buddy. We recently started talking again, and thinking about this makes me want to hang out with him.

Actually that's why I kept hesitating to say this, but here goes anyway...

I have a friend who can't be in a room where Cocteau Twins music is playing. He is about the least "sensitive" or emotional person I know, but we associate that music with a mutual pal who died way too young about ten years ago, a close friend and an unforgettable person. He loved that band and played their music way too much. I think that the melancholy/bittersweet quality in CT music plays a part, but my friend says that whenever he hears them, he feels the grief again and wants to run away. For my part, I like sad-sounding music. I think sadness and bittersweet emotions in music are incredibly beautiful. For example "In My Room" by the Beach Boys always reminds me of my older brother who died in a stupid accident in 1981. It's a personal sort of song and a sad memory, but it's not bad, I don't try to get away from it. I'm glad I inherited his love of that band.

"Tell Me Something Good" by Rufus brings back strong impressions of the 1974 World's Fair in Spokane, which had a big impact on my young self. That song was all over the AM radio at the time. It's more than just memories ... it's like I can see things, smell things ... very strong mnemonic effect.

What used to be side 1 of "Ziggy Stardust" was playing the first time I "made out" with my favorite high school girlfriend, a woman whom I admire and have affection for to this day. For years I tried not to overplay that record because I wanted to "preserve" the impression. It's faded with time but still triggers happy memories of puppy love.
