 Smoking in a toy store/gallery
Hi,
I wondered about the opinion of this on here. I went to an art opening/toy release in Philly this weekend, and although I was disinterested in most of the stock in the store, I was STUNNED to see that the owner allowed customers to smoke inside.
Not only did he allow it, but when some folks spilled into the street, he came out and announced that it was ok to smoke in the store because all of the staff smoked.
I was shocked. I would never buy a toy or original artwork that was in a gallery or store where people were smoking. I'm serious. Is this commonplace anywhere?

Lame. I mean, I like that he CAN allow it, it's a private business and I don't feel the government should have a say on whether or not smoking is allowed in a privatley owned business (if you don't like it, don't eat or shop there, easy.)
BUT as a good business owner he should have been aware of what he was allowing, something dangerous to the products/art he displayed and sold at his business. It's just being ignorant.

yeah i didn't even mention that they sell a lot of clothes, and I'd hardly want a new shirt I bought to smell like a smokey bar.
Also there were TONS of people in there, and an accident was certainly a possibility. I don't care if you want to fuck up your toys or art, but leave mine nice until I get them home.

and actually, Smoking is Illegal indoors in Philadelphia: I might report them.
The Philadelphia law banning smoking in many public places has gone into effect as of today. (9/26/06)
The law mandates that smoking in prohibited inside:
* all workplaces
* galleries
* sports facilities
* restaurants and most bars
The law mandates that smoking in prohibited outside:
* of all of the above locations, up to 20 feet from all entrances
The following are exempt from the ban:
* outdoor cafes
* private clubs
* bars that that derive at least 90 percent of their income from drinks (waiver required)
Fines for violating the law range from $25 to $300.
Read the full text of the Clean Indoor Air Worker Protection Law.

I figured it would be, being a large city.
I don't actually agree with that law, but whatever, that's not a discussion for this board.

Well since I don't smoke I sure as hell wouldn't want to buy something and get it home and it stink of smoke and make my the houst stink as well. Not including the fact that it is damaging to the art. Lame.

I wouldn't report him, no one likes a snitch
But honestly, you have reported this guy! You are talking to people on this board who might potentially go to this ashtray and buy something from him(or her).
I'd name names right here on the board!

Well brace yourself if you ever go to Japan. There's a few sections in Nakano Broadway and some of the more old timey places that are pretty cloudy.
I don't smoke either but I agree with BloodDrinker6969. There's a city a little south of here (SF) that recently banned smoking INSIDE your own apartment, condo, duplex. Geez. If they're going to pass that kinda crap, I hope they ban strong perfumes and colognes.

Banned smoking, perfume, and cologne, plus a required 2 daily showers sounds like splendid utopia to me.

I kind of wish they'd stop banning shit, and start passing a few more freedoms up in this piece!
