On the flip side, is the "get it now" panic where people pay inflated prices when they miss a release only to see prices come down. Seen this so many times.
I really have a hard time thinking that alot of contemporary vinyl will hold its value. Or grow in value. I can't get into the "investment" mindset. I also can't imagine have a "love" for only one toy line. For me, it's broader and more complicated. logang1 wrote: I have collected vinly for a long time...but never really had the passion (or patience) to chase the limited stuff....

There are also theories about consumer consumption where the most exciting part of purchasing an item is at the moment of the sale. And how some buy not for what they truly like or desire but for the image that it creates or projects.
Speaking in general terms.
Editing this for clarity:
that the exciting part of purchasing an item is at the moment of the sale instead of owning or using the item afterwards.

Humans are hunter gatherers. Thrill of the kill. Thrill of 'Consuming' is merely an abstraction of reward behavior ingrained on our species to insure survival.

Yup, that instant-grat thing is a big part of what drives commerce. I think the greatest thing about this hobby (by contrast) is when that insta-thrill is gone, but the love for something that's been on the shelf for awhile keeps growing. Like ... for me there was a big thrill in landing some Cronic pieces recently, but even though they're great, some easier-to-get stuff around which there's no hype (e.g. Dino-Tank, Aion) delivers more unique character. The Cronic felt like a more exciting purchase at the time, but those vintage repros keep shouting good stuff from their shelves. Nice thing about the best RxH is it works both ways. It's exciting to score but it keeps delivering, too. Seems to be a big difference between first impressions and lasting impressions.

Has anyone considered that these early Real x Head figures are worth that much?

To build on that, part of this scene that I don't really care for is the conspicuous consumption. Sometimes it seems less of a "hobby" and more of just the purchasing and trading of commodities, especially in the online world. Point click purchase. Point click purchase.
The figures that I had the hardest time chasing, with false leads, people flaking, overloaded web servers, me sleeping on something and missing it, are the ones that I really care about on a certain level.
The figures that just ended up in my lap with minimal work carry less value to me.
The excitement and appeal of certain toys also seems to morph over time. Where you can really warm up to something or appreciate something much more after seeing a tokusatsu show or seeing it paired up with other figures.

Its definitely out of love. Bidding on this lot was a collabo with another SBer.
Yes it was expensive, but figures still minty in bag??? Old header Mutant Head with that cool little white tag?? And I am gonna be the first to liberate them from their bags??? Ever??? Hard to contain my enthusiasm guys, and happy to pay the dollars.
Sorry if not everyone agrees, and thinks patience is better, stalking....etc. These are good points.
Also....
This is no where near considered as an investment, strictly FUN.
Oh, and what do I love? RxH, Dream Rocket, Gargamel to name a few.
But the passion is definitely RxH.

Are they that seminal and groundbreaking? I think not.
It's like the internet bubble.

So what are some of the prices for these same figures on Yahoo Japan?

Does it count when it seems like some of the same parties are bidding on both ends?

Love it or hate it, one thing about "the list" has become clear to me. To the extent that people respected it, it took the "I have more money to burn than you" factor out of the game to some degree. I can't compete with some of the high rollers but I can only imagine what it's like for people who can't even afford stuff at my level. Oh well such is a Capitalist world and I can't say I've got a better alternative.

Kirkland, really pumped to get a couple of figures I've wanted...thanks man....that GID Evil is sweet, but not going to me, its going to the other board member splitting the lot with me.
If this "list" you are referring to was a "who needs what figure" thing...I am up for it....taking turns...if it needs to be that formal. Otherwise many SBers have PM'd in the past to ask me to back off of auctions, and I have readily obliged. Some have even PM'd with their max bid, and offered up a greenlight if they got outbid....whatever works is fine by me.
I knew that bidding on this lot would be a complete cluster, since there were so many rare figures, but I'm not gonna apologize for buying what I want to pick up with my money....
If you were into Real x Head when the figures were more reasonably priced, or were around when you got to buy them at retail from S7...then I envy those RxH fans in a big way.

The List was started by Pogue as an honors and courtesy system. People added their eBay and YJA screen names to the list on the principle that when bidding, one would not bid against someone else on the list who got there first. (Correct me if I got that wrong, OG peeps.) Earlier this year there was a debate about whether or not such a list was valid when the whole point of auctions was competition. Evidently frustrated with the way the debate was going, Pogue took the list down.

I respected the list originally, then Skullbrainers outbid me repeatedly.
