I sort of envision this as a BBS version of ToyboxDX's datafiles... but vinyl-oriented.

The key for the new section, if it goes through, is that it is only for identification and not for posting pix of toys that you know. That's what the Show Off section is for. Yes the search function works well...but you can't search for something if you don't know what it is or where to start. Yes the mook will be useful, but there will always be someone that didn't buy it. The biggest problem I see will be the long list of posts with almost the same subject: "Can someone tell me what this is?" or "What is this?" or something along those lines. Yes a pic collection would be awesome, but who really has the time to set that up and maintain that section?

I'd like to know EXACTLY what the little birdy told Loco.

I find it frustrating that there isn't a good database of past releases, and silly to think that knowledge of these past toys could be detrimental to collectors. The toys are already out there, and the market is what it is...people who want the stuff are looking,,,this would really serve as a tool for them, no?

I also don't like the "Us and Them" attitude toward people who would just happen upon this amazing visual database and conspire to join the flipper armies and ruin the chances for the real collectors...it's a long leap to think it would lead to that, no? why not just see it as something we would all really enjoy looking at? Flippers tend to live off the next big thing usually...I haven't met many flippers wasting time trolling for a figure that would have to be pried from the rigor of a skullbrainer's hands. They feed on fresh kills.

As rumored, we are in the middle of programming our online toy figure database that will live on this site with almost all the main toy manufacturers and visual checklists of everything they have made to date. It is a daunting task, but one we relish, we have so much stuff in the works, it is a little crazy, it just takes time to complete these things, as they are not small tasks. We have a lot of added functionality that we plan on trying to launch at the same time, so it should be a pretty large "remodel" all at once. Stay tuned.

That's exactly what it should be. A datafile, chronicling past & present releases. Very informative and would definitely reduce the number of posts requesting info. I mean if u think about it, there aren't any websites/forums (that I know of) which provide a library for Kaiju vinyls. If Skullbrain decides to take this route then it'll be the next step in boosting S7's presence as a center for kaiju geeks.

My impression is that people on this forum do not like pictures of toys.

It's the multiple "spam" threads for one photoshop'ed toy in the same sterile setting that aren't well received. A (near) complete resource in one place would be awesome.

Please explain why or how you consider pictures of kaiju toys on a kaiju toy forum to be spam? How are pictures of toys, whether you like the particular style or not, more "spamish" than all of the (perhaps innocently) inane comments between the pictures of what this board is really (purportedly) all about?

[edited to remove the (justifiably IMO) whiney bits...]

I voted no because I heard rumors of S7 creating their own database which they apparently are.

I trust S7 to provide the framework and provide quality control. Possibly open it up to certain people to add information in a wiki fashion.

No matter what venue it's in:
- S7 doing it
- A separate / subsection of Skullbrain
- A forum member who I believe is doing something along these lines,
I would love to contribute as much as possible.

I was actually contemplating starting a similar thing for neo-kaiju and fight figures. I stopped dreaming when the knowledge of PHP would have to be learned to make it work to the best of its ability.

Since we're talking about software, I think the new board update with the new ignore feature is a great improvement.

I set certain members to ignore mode and the noise level has dropped dramatically.
No drama, no posturing, no pimping, no pity cases, no racial stuff, no homophobic stuff, no thread floods.

I encourage everyone to enable this feature.

Because most likely no one would do it. We would end up with a forum section where the only post are by people complaining about the lack of lists and pictures. Then it would somehow become S7 fault..........

There it is. People would need to work together to compile these, similar to the "Datafiles" over at TBDX. Not to say it couldn't be done, but it seems that as of late, folks don't want to play nice....

Edit: Whoops! Didn't see Senor Flynn's post about S7 taking the lead....ganbare!

yes, of course rules would have to be laid down. it would nt be a discusiion area. i'm glad to hear super7 are already doijng something about this.

i had envisioned it as each person who was a member here, just picking their great love out of all this and doing that section, because who else would be so knowledgeable? as frank said, photos would follow exactly the format i already used in the Blobpus dokugan thread, front/back, no glamour shots.

and i really dont see how having these lists woukld benefit flippers in any way, they woukld be after something more like the dionne warwick psychic list of all future toy realeases - who, when, what? ')

I think the lists would have extra goodness if they included:

- original release date
- original yen price
- character and manufacturer's name in Japanese
- size in metric and English (because one company's "mini" is another's mid-size)

we will have release dates, sizes and all other pertinent information as best we can corroborate with the manufacturers. It will be all that and a bag of chips.

i prefer no checklist. i like the mystique and the thought that there's something out there I haven't seen... and if one ever surfaces, i'd be like "oo, what is that?"

but not like if there's a database i'd be mad.

yeah

oh yeah... and i think additional features and more subsections would make this forum too complicated for me. i like it how it is now.

I am super amazed that 1/3rd of the votes are oppossed to an archive.

I wonder, is the percentage also oppossed to things like the upcoming mook, or the flyer Kaiju-Taro just released IE: real x head?.

Or is it they dont want an archive here, on the skulbrain site.? what if the archive was it's own, seperate 'read only' site?

?

There are always going to be people who want a monopoly on knowledge, or want certain secrets to remain that way. Brian has gotten complaints about Super7 articles, I experienced some griping when I posted my Yahoo Auctions FAQ, and more recently I spoke to someone who grumbled about Tokyo Underground. Fortunately, these people are in the minority.

But how does a databsae take away from the hunt? I mean, all it does is make me want to start hunting for things I didn't know existed.
