My collection has definitely run amuck and it's time for some shelving. It's not helping that I have an 11 piece celga haul coming in at the end of the month. I've decided to be boring and go with a detolf like everyone else, but have a question or two.

Well first ikea are complete con artists on shipping and handling. $245 dollars to ship one $60 dollar detolf. Are you kidding? So it's off to Canada, one hour away in Burlington, to score two in the next few weeks. My question is this. My G/F drives one of those Scions toaster looking cars. Now I believe since the back seats fold down there should be enough room to put one in (I mean the package specs say lest than 6 feet). Could I fit one or two of these in a Scion? Anyone ever try this? Or am I goign to need another vehicle?

I drive a Pontiac Vibe. I can fit two fully assembled detolfs in the back. But then again, I wasn't driving very far and had to leave the back hatch open. I'm not sure if a Scion xB is much larger or what.

i drive a honda element which is comparable to a scion - you should have no trouble fitting it in there. especially if the seats fold down

on my trip i fit a detolf, a coffee table, and some other stuff

also, the shipping does seem high, but you will see why when you pick that fucker up. it would take 2 mail carriers to deliver it to your door

i would recommend getting some help moving that box. it's heavy!

I know it will work. If they are too long you simply move the front passenger seat all the way forward. Remove the headrest next. Then recline the seat, it will go all the way flat. So you would need to sit in the back seat behind the driver, that would be worst case, but you probably will not even need to do that.

Hey thanks for all the replies guys. I pretty much figured they'd fit but my G/F didn't think they would and was worried they might damage her car it somehow. Now I have some good ol' skullbrainer proof it won't- thus getting me out of the red and at least in the yellow caution with her. It really sucks sometimes NOT having your own car (then again gas, insurance, upkeep?)

where do you live that you dont need a car? i wish i lived there!

i was able to fit one in my scion TC... so i'm pretty sure it fits in an XB

the detolf in it's unassembled form isn't very big...just long and heavy...but only 3 or so inches thick in the box...so most cars can fit them easily.

and Pickle...living in NYC is a godsend if you don't want a car...it's a walker's heaven. in fact, having a car normally ends up slowing you down here...

I have a caddillac cts and my freakin back seats don't even fold down, and the trunk where the spare is has a screw thats a bit to long that scratches the hell out of stuff, I discovered it after putting an art print back there when it was new and found a whole in it and was like what the heck, and looked in my trunk, still need to take a bolt cutter to it.

I didn't realize Ikea's were so far from people in other places either. In so cal it seems like there is always one 30 minutes or less from everywhere.

the closest ikea to me (near raleigh, nc) is northern VA... over 4 hours away

Yup that SOB is heavy. Something to think about tho. I ordered 8 detolfs and it only cost me $190 for shipping from Ikea. Weird how everyone is getting high shipping cost for just one. Now when the delivery guy arrived he was driving a rental truck and course I helped him unload. I plan on ordering 8 more after the holidays. Hopefully that $190 shipping wasn't just a fluke.

I think shipping is based on distance from the closest IKEA. I ordered two and the shipping was around $150ish.

ikea runs their own shipping so cost vary A LOT depending on how close you are to the store shipping it out. they have to pay for the dude delivering it and the gas/truck...sometimes that's a ton of dough.

Just one thing I'd probably do in your place - buy an extra 2 or 3 Detolfs, to use down the line when you need them. If you can get one into your car, you can probably get 3 or 4 in, because the boxes are really flat. Since you're driving a distance to get them and going through all that hassle, might not be a bad idea to anticipate the time in the very near future when your first Detolf is filled up.

you can definitly fit one, i have an XB, it takes 2 people, one hasto hold it through the middle of the 2 front seats, i dont think youll manage 2 that way. maybe you can do it with 1 person and lye it in the front seat idk if i tried it that way.

Yeah I was going to get two but now probably three, just so I don't have to make another trip in the future. I mean as long as they're flat I'm sure they'll fit in the scion. The only thing I was worried about was the length.

I just built my second detolf today. Man they are a pain in the arse, when you are short and wimpy and doing it all yourself. First one I bought I picked up at the local Ikea, carried it by hand myself from the self-serve area to checkout, then out to my car which was far far away in the lot. Then I brought it upstairs in my house, thought I was going to lose it down the stairs about 4 times (the bottom of the box was falling apart and just barely held together as it was coming up the stairs.) I will say I am getting better at building them, next one should be a breeze.

Actually speaking of Detolf, does anyone have a good lighting recommendation for them, something not too hot so it won't melt/fade vinyl, maybe xenon bulb, AC-powered so I can just plug it into an outlet? I've seen a few things online but I'm curious what other folks here have used.

Once I get settled into my new digs, I was thinking of doing the same thing. Customizing is really the only way to do a collection justice.

I too am worried about lighting though. If anyone has any recommendations, I would second Nicky G's interest.

With the right lights, wood and an electric screw driver/drill would not be difficult. If a 10 year old kid in Indonesia can do it for Ikea and the like, then I feel I should too.

Never been a fan of Detolfs. Just seems to break down a collection into a series of cubes or cells. And then how do you appreciate or look at what's in the bottom unless they're some low bookshelf or something.

I just like having stuff out randomly on shelves cause it invites one to pick up pieces or easily rearrange them. But then I don't have kids or pets or other things to worry about.

Yeah that's what I really don't like, having to segment everything into cubes, I would much rather have a ton of shit all together on a giant long shelf.
