NEW QUESTION!! YAY!!

1- ritarder (or however you spell it)

do i thin the ritarder before adding it to thinned paint? or how does that work?

I have a comment but I'm gonna keep that one to myself...hehehe. Instead, from whatever I learned about glues and paints in college, I'm guessing this "ritarder" that pickel is talking about is an agent to slow the drying of the paint. If that's the case, then my guess is that it should be mixed in with the paint you'll be using. The amount you mix in is dependant on how slow a drying process do you need in order to achieve the effect that you want. If what this is what the "ritarder" is (aka: retardant: noun; any substance capable of reducing the speed of a given reaction), you might want to try it on something other than a toy....like say...an old record (just kidding).

i know how to spell retardant!

Its interesting though to know exactly why these aren't sold in the US. Just exactly why and just how hazardess they really are.

Just spray silver v-color on a base. The get an acrylic black everyday paint. Quickly rub on and rub off with a clean cloth. There ya go :) thats what worked for me :)

Then I sprayed clear green on top :)

So you're trying to do a rub...or a drybrush look on a base color? If it is a retardant, then it will do what I mentioned. It should slow the drying process down based on how much you use. I personally hate using anything other than paint and thinner. I'd say...before you buy it, try different techniques. There's a few basic techniques that you can use if you look up painting techniques for miniatures (like the one's used for Warhammer and the like). The rub style is similar to doing a wash for miniatures, and drybrushing is the same in just about every style of painting. In the end, there really is only one way to paint...and it is your style of painting.

and another question

how will v-color work on very soft vinyl... like bathtub duckie soft?

I would think it would stick, but I wouldn't let any kids play with it in the tub though... not sure how toxic the stuff is.

it's only for me. it's a figure from this line:

they are pretty soft

I was talking about this guy! So awesome, do you have others too? I'd like to see a pic of the set or some more of them.

To do the walder effect or any rub off it's kinda hard but great at the end. I've asked the guys in Japan about this a while back. They have told me that
1. Paint it silver or black base on the area you want the effect. Let it dry overnight.
2. Then spray the silver or black on top and wait about 1min~3min. then get a rag and put some thinner on it and start wiping lightly. This should just wipe off the top coat and not the bottom. But remember not to rub it hard for it can penetrate to the bottom base and wipe it off.

Hope this helps. I still need to try it.

NEW QUESTIONS!

1- how do some of you customizers out there get glitter on your custom jobs?

2- when masking, how do you make the line where the 2 paints meet perfectly smooth. a lot of the time with mine you will see a little ridge between the 2 colors. am i putting down too much paint?

when i have to ship this paint from japan at the price that i do, i don't like to waste it on something that can be solved just by asking

and as for the glitter - cant really experiment with that when i dont know how it is even done

and as for experimentation... i'll save that for the colors themselves... not shitty little technical problems like i have with trying to paint v-color on with a brush. still needing to figure that one out

I agree with rhino 100% !

Sometimes the best effects you will discover wither by accident of just going for it. Art isn't cheap brotha so expect to loose some money doing this.

Remember the people whp came before you had to pay there dues and figure the problems out on their own. Some of this your gonna have to lean through trial and error. This will actually help create your own style and help you learn.

Its like the karate kid :)

i'm asking things i was unable to figure out - like getting these lines smooth. why cause so much frustration and extra work with an annoying technical problem like that? i dont want to be all the way thru something then have one of my mask lines just ruin it.

and this thread is here for everyone - it's why i posted it in the first place. darth hank seems to enjoy it. this information gets so scattered so why not just have it one place - nice tips and tricks for those of us starting out without deep pockets and/or tons of resources

i make plenty of mistakes, trust me. but if i can save myself 20 bucks and a week or 2 on a couple jars of paint shipped, it is most definitely in my (and most people here i imagine) best interest
