Yeah, maybeb it was. But for me moving frm London, it seemed relatively low cost....but in terms of property, its catching up. It is certainly WAY more expensive than it was when I moved here 8 years ago. Property prices have almost tripled...altho I can't compare that with other areas of the US, but I can say London's prices ahve similarly increased - and they started off more expensive.

If u want to live outside of the trendier parts of LA, then its cheaper, but still (as far as I knwo) more than many other parts of the country.

There was a 750 sf shack in Seaside (not as beautiful as the name implies) that went for $750,000 and that's the crappy area down here. If you want something within' Carmel by the Sea you can't even start looking for a "Charming Carmel cottage" for under a $1 million! And it's a fixer upper to boot. I can't complain though it's gorgeous, beaches, forest and so on. I'll just never own a place here.

Its cool ...

But is bothers me when people say that.

I get it often when no one really knows the truth.

So some times I lash out.

I moved from Cali to Seattle almost 19 years ago, I love it here ! There are still FANTASTIC deals on homes here compared to SF , CA. I loved SF but you really have to be raking in the doe BIG time if you ever wanna buy a home there. One of the reasons I left is rents were fucking out of control unless you had 3 or 4 room mates, no thanks. I lived in a 3 bedroom house with full yard and all the stuff here for nearl 10 years, it cost me $850 a month, in Seattle proper. It would probably run you $2,500 a month in SF. But I can still visit my old SF any time. I love SF, but Seattle is HOME !

In Ma. it's no better. I'm on the outskirts of Boston and a one bedroom is $1,000 or more a month. Not that nice of area's either. By law every condo/apartment complex over 8 units has to have section eight. I need to move. Forget about making decent money. Any general labor job pays about $10 an hour. Up here you live paycheck to paycheck.

where do you live greg??

i have friends with good jobs in publishing/advertising in Boston that are barely scraping by... even though they live in a crappy basement apartment an hour out of the city!!!

and of course western MA is much like upstate New York. Significantly rural and economically depressed. sigh....

This is easily one of the most depressing threads ever...

Everyone should move to Minnesota. Granted even in the summer most things, outside of bars, close by 9:00 and it gets so cold and you can't go outside during certain months but the cost of living is relatively low and the jobs aren't terrible.

The biggest problem is being in flyover land and having almost zero direct access to things like SB. But you can get a two bedroom apt 15 minutes outside Minneapolis for $700.

Come to Blighty!!

I'm just outside the affluent area (Chester) so I get the cheap housing (ish) and all the benefits.

That is the trick, you have to find where the line is and ride it like a horse.

I had a friend who lived in a part of Brooklyn that was one block over from 2 million dollar lofts but because the zip code changed one block over his place was insanely cheap.
