Post Macworld
Anyone glued to macrumors in anticipation of this?

I direly need a new laptop. I don't know if I'd be into the alleged uber-tiny laptop, but I'd love a 12" macbook pro.

I'm loving that mini notebook design that fits into the side of the display like a dock. I wouldn't get one until next year, but still...nice stuff if it's true.

I can't believe Macworld is here again already...

Please freaking god, new Xserve RAID and Final Cut Server already....!!! $@!?ing Apple... New laptops would be nice, micro notebook sure. The new Mac Pros and Xserves are dank, PCI Express 2.0 slots w/ 16 lanes, that is 8 Gigabytes per second in each direction, mmmmmm. Think about the utterly ridiculous RAID/SAN you could have on there...

My best bud is in charge of laptops at Apple. He won't tell me anything, being the professional he is, but it appears to be safe to assume that an unusually lightweight laptop will be announced.

Beatles on iTunes is inevitable, but I don't think the catalogue is fully remastered for digital distribution just yet.

I think I can sum it up:

Blu-ray has regions, nastier DM, more data storage, and is a little more fragile.

HD-DVD doesn't have regions, slightly less nasty DRM, a bit less storage, a little more robust (tougher to scratch it a way that would cause data loss), and easier for manufacturers to switch to from DVD.

Some people inherently hate Blu-ray because Sony is involved. Some people inherently hate HD-DVD because Microsoft is involved.

About 2/3rds of the studios are behind Blu-ray exclusively, the others are behind HD-DVD exclusively -- for the time being, at least. There has been switching both ways. As of late, it seems like Blu-ray has the momentum, with Warner moving to Blu-ray exclusively. There are rumors of the last two big studios who are behind HD-DVD switching to Blu-ray soon, but they deny it.

All I know is, I'm the kind of person who should be first in line to buy a high-def. disc player -- I buy a lot of DVDs and have an HDTV, and am a big believer in the superiority of well-produced HD content over SD content (I sell HD editing systems and video equipment for a living.) If someone like me is "boycotting" both the formats until the industry gets a clue and one format prevails, something is seriously eff'd up. My guess is that Blu-ray will probably win, but it will take a lot longer than it should have for this to become clear.

Nicky you are right on the money, excuse me if i ramble but one fat pub lunch severl staropramens and irish coffess later
I own a sony bravia hdtv, my amp is sony as in my multi region dvd player...
Parka don't know if you have seem a hd image but it is stunning (be it blu ray or hdtv) this will be the last physical format before downloads (approx ten years ) the problem stems from the fact that sony aggressively want their format to be the one going format
Blu ray machines on the market today are what is called 1.0...sony are about to release 2.0 discs which will not play in older machines
sony want you to pay extra for special features via online download
blu ray machines use java script and are really buggy
blu ray doesn't support the usual optical.coaxial leads for digital sound meaning you have to use hdmi leads for true hd sound meaning you need a new amp
regional coding looks like it will be impossible to ack at the moment
the price is double at the moment, and i personally dont think it will come down when they have a strannglehold on the market

I like sony but over the years they have tried to push technology that is not compatible with others _memory sticks, mini discs, betamax, umd etc and i believe that this is really bad for US the consumer ...although i would be happier with one universal hd format as the picture is stunning.
Not surprised apple went with with blu ray as hd dvd is funded by microsoft and both of these companies are going to be pushingfor downloadable film content shortly (i beleive jobs is going to announce downloadable film renting on monday from itunes)

sermon over

I think HD-DVD has already lost. Don't quote me or anything but I thought all the numbers I've seen have the installed blu-ray base outnumbering hddvd by millions of units. Of course this is somewhat misleading as tons of those are PS3 units. But that was Sony's big gamble in the first place...they were banking on PS3 getting blu ray players into homes...and it pretty much worked. Now major studios are switching exclusively to bluray, apple, etc...

That won't bother me at all. I wanted a Macbook. So I'm happy with that, just I hope there aren't any huge hardware upgrades. For some reason an ultra-thin laptop doesn't do much for me. Especially because the rumored hard drive will be only 32 gbs. It would be nice to have the non-moving hard drive, but the space isn't high enough for me.

When is small too small though? Although there are absurdly sized laptops out there, my 12" powerbook seems just about perfect. It's definitely not too heavy to lug around. Even my girlfriend's 13" macbook is pretty portable.

If this 0.8" thick laptop rumor pans out, will it feel so small that it feel cheap and fragile? Will there be enough weight to keep the monitor/lid from tipping back when it's open greater than 90º?

I have a 12' laptop from 2004 which is starting to show its age (like when running Leopard). Definitely portable, but my next laptop has to be a 15" and/or spring for a cinema display. I found the 12" screen fine for short periods, but I want more screen real estate next time.

It's amazing how quickly we get spoiled by tech. I only started using my 24" iMac about four months ago, but already, my 17" PC monitor seems unacceptably small. Like, I watched movies on that?

Heh, Apple site says "something's in the air."

Just curious, how did those of you who know about the lightweight portable find out? From the rumor sites?

My powerbook is about the same age as yours and it's getting a bit run down. The funny thing is that I was fully convinced last January that I needed a new machine but when macworld fell short (with no macpro revision), I just decided to hold out until leopard. Then I decided to hold out till tomorrow. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.

I agree about the size of the 12" screen for longterm use. I have a 23" cinema that I plug into for the most part. The 12" is great for grab and go situations though.
