I want no sequels

I started thinking about that a little too. Like maybe there were more of those big ass things?

I mean why else NY? Why not somewhere down the coast that's less populated? It seems like if it hit the big city it was a target, otherwise what are the chances that thing would rise up in NYC vx. an entire eastern coastline?

I think w/the sequel they just said something like "there's no way those were the only people recording that in New York." Like the other movies will just be different people going through the same attack and uncovering different info about the monster/s in the movie.

That's why I say it might be cool, but generally sequels suck so I'd rather leave it as it is.

Heard a rumor there's supposed to be a manga coming out based on it??


OH another thing I liked was the monster itself, so awkward. It was great that it wasn't just some large version of an animal, and that it had a real alien look to it. The huge arms that just flopped around and what not. Loved it.

Nerd stuff...

The movie is wrapped up as a TOTAL homage to Godzilla. It starts with the stomping sounds of the monster, and ends with that great Ifukube-style song that incorporates aspects of SO many kaiju soundtracks. Awesome.

I love the fact that we never find out what the monster is, or where it came from, and I'm actually sort of happy that it didn't turn out to be a whale monster with parasitic isopods. These designs were much more novel. At one point, I was thinking, "rat-bat-spider-crab!"

It was somewhat like something from Lovecraft, too. It certainly doesn't look like any living or extinct creature. That's a good thing.

I'm also glad that none of the viral marketing web sites had any bearing on the movie. Haha.

At the end of the credits, what is being whispered? Sounded like one word, like "still."

Also:

"You know who Superman is?"

"Yes, I know who Superman is! I also know who Garfield is."

I felt sad when she died.

Ah. According to IMDB, the whisper is, "it's still alive" backwards.

The monster reminded me of a more sea like angel from neon genesis. The way it slithered around the city was awesome. And BD I also caught my self with my mouth open in shock

Just exactly why is it called cloverfield ?

the street that the Bad Robot production company is located on is called Cloverfield. that wasn't going to be the original title, but was more like a "project" title they were referring to it as before a proper title was selected in order to keep it kind of secret. but then buzz kinda got out and people seemed to find the title intriguing, so they stuck with it and turned it into the name of the "incident" in the film.

So I just saw this tonight, and all I can say is GODDAMN! It totally freaked me out, as in, I left the theater shaking and with my stomach in a total knot, due to a constant adrenaline rush for about an hour. I can't think of any other sci-fi/horror movies that have had this effect on me. Heheh, maybe it's _because_ I'm a bit of a yuppie, aged 30?

I did see the splash in the water at the end, I was kind of wondering what it was. Thinking back on it, it does kind of seem like it was perhaps the monster in some larval form or something splashing into the ocean from... beyond?

Much of the movie gave me that feeling that you get watching a few of the extended sequences in Children of Men -- they just totally put you there, with complete madness going on, and you just have this feeling like "this is how it would really be." Amazing.

I thought the unknown actors were pretty good, and likeable. I liked Hud, and yeah, I think I agree that it was probably a nod to heads-up-display.

The monster and its babies (?) were just totally, totally mad. And rad. Complete hardcore freakout, definitely Lovecraftian, in that they just kind of can't be described. It's funny, when you read that Cthulhu is so horrible it defies expalnation, yadda yadda, I was always like WTF, you can describe anything, even a vile alien-looking monster. OK, now I know I was wrong, some things are just so freaky and horrible and out-there that you just can't really describe it as anything other than "something horrible" or whatever Hud said, which was freaking hilarious. I mean, I needed something light like his commentary sprinkled throughout the film, because otherwise it just would have been TOO MUCH.

Screw the booing little teenage brats, they probably had to look tough in front of their buds or something, because deep down it actually scared the shit out of them. Me, I don't have anything to prove, so I'm at ease admitting this film scared the bejesus out of me, and I will likely have nightmares from it.

As far as sequels go, I say go for it -- this is produced by JJ Abrams, I haven't seen much of his stuff but I do know he can tell a neat story over many parts, and just when you think you're putting it all together, BAM, there's another twist to keep your head spinning. If they kept this story unfolding in such a manner, I say HELLS YES!

All of the critics who say the movie is somehow milking 911 or whatnot, I'd say BS, there have been movies about cities getting destroyed for a long time. But, since 911 we actually know what it looks like when a giant skyscraper or two collapses in a very dense urban area, and so do filmmakers, so they can now make it much, much more realistic. But yes, all of these types of movies always are about our fears as a society, and this comes at just the right time because I think as a civilization we have much to fear.

God, I just cant stop thinking about what I just experienced... skylar, did you catch a sneak preview or something? I never would have been able to bottle up feelings about this flick for a week -- as soon as I got out I called my brother and was like "DUDE OH MY GOD YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!!!!!!! AAAAHHHHGG!!!!"

Shit -- that scene where you see the B-2 Stealth bomber just drop a ton of bombs on the monster... my god. Or that scene in the electronics store when you see glimpses of the creature on the news. So well done.

It was going to be called Greyshot which is the name of the arch in central park that they hide under at the end of the movie.

yeah. I occasionally review films for a FEARnet, Comcast's all horror On Demand channel and website. I'm also a member of the Philadelphia Film Society. so between those 2 things I get invited to a fair amount of advance/press screenings.

Re: the 9/11 connection -this was the first film I've seen (out of many) that I would call a true allegory for the whole 9/11 experience. The sense that it came, seemingly, out of nowhere, and just fucked everyone up. I loved the fact that there was no backstory, no explanation, etc. Made it much more realistic and frightening. I don't even care to theorize about it, because in my opinion (like I said before) the unknown is way more threatening. The camcorder idea was genius, it could have looked crude but they pulled it off so well.
And I'm with Skylar - NO sequel, please.

just got back. few gripes.
1. what were they beating the monsters with in the subway?
2. why didnt they keep those weapons. theyw ere just attacked by random creatures, you dont expect to see them again?
3. WHY DIDNT YOU KEEP THE CROBAR?
4.Beth should have either been dead, or seriously bleeding after they pulled her off that rubar.
5. im not sure i buy them, surviving that helicopter crash, maybe it should have ended there. i woulda walked out more excited i think.

questions and speculations:
where did the little creatures come from? they just came flying off the big one... they didnt hatch off it, they certainly werent birthed, are they small versions or are they some other lifeform?
i thought his breathing bubbles on his head were his lungs, and they really didnt look to be too tough, howcome no bombs poped them?

i wouldnt believe the oil rig in japan unearthing story, cuz if he was gonna show up in the US first, then hed show up in Cali not NYC.

i like the idea of others droppoing or showing up in cities across the world as well.

i can see a whole bunch of sequel/prequel/another angel movie options on this, not that i necicerily want one, but i dont doubt there wont be one. either another angle or another city or what happens after, who knows.

it was and wasnt what i expected, it didnt scare me but there was some excitement, and i did like h0ow they did alot of the scenes like the rooftop, the store when they saw the news, the army busting in and blasting the hell out of the thing, the statue of libertys head!!! and theinr plan to cross buildings.

oh, and my imagination came uip with this: the bite comtains a virus which our body cant handle and basicly boils our blood or skyrockets our bloodpressure bursting vessels and shit.

Something that was suggested to me: if the relationship between the little monster and the big one are a parasite-host relationship, then the parasites' saliva may contain some super-powered anticoagulant, like mosquitoes have.

That was fucking scary and I loved it! It was like every giant monster attack nightmare I've ever had.

i watched this after eating a gigantic meal about an hour before......not a recommended way of experiencing this, as the pov camerawork def made me queasy.....

as skylar pointed out the use of our imagination, builds the terror that this creature causes as it wreaks havoc on the populace of new york.....showing only glimpses of the monster is one of the best ways, imo, to help build suspense.....you never really get a good look at it, even as is eats hud.

i certainly got a lovecraftian vibe from this baddie.....my opinion is in the outerspace/alternate realm idea, either falling out of the sky or ripped from another dimension.....

this film won't be for everybody, my theater had notices posted that it causes motion sickness......

my thoughts is that a great movie keeps you thinking about it long after it's over.....this one had me doing little tasks around the house for about an hour before i could go to sleep....did i mention that i caught the last showing?

as for No County for Old Men. it was a wonderful film and a good book.....but what you should really read is the Road.....post apocaylptic survival tale, that is hard to forget.
