My favorite place this side of Osaka has got to be Tommy's sushi in tustin. Total dive, nothing fancy been there 20+ years best fish quality I have had in the states.
They also make their own spicey sauce and the wasabi isn't that over powering crap you get at some places and they don't ever have dyed pink ginger. Its also dirt cheap, I would recommend only sitting at the sushi bar, the tables are really boring. Just a heads up if anyone is in the are or everyone is going through there, plus I really love the place.

Onami or Todai for me.

If you're ever in Hawaii there's a famous (or infamous) sushi place named "Sasabune." The sushi chef is notoriously strict about the method of consuming each type of sushi, and has actually asked people to leave on this basis. Never been there yet, as it's about $100 a head.

Winu there is a place in La Jolla called Tadashi that has such good sushi, its down the street from the la jolla american apparel on the corner when you first come in to town, the whole side is glass and is great for people watching and they have great specialty rolls.

That and you guys got Sushi On The Rock there and in encinitas, its really good food, I am banned from there though, I got kind of rowdy there and a bit physical, ended up spending the night at my friends house, the couch was all concrete though it was kind of a bust. The place is upscale, dark and is great for dates.

My uncle in Florida ownes a Sushi place, which is really taste better then what i've tried over here.

I'd be interested to know if Japanese people actually run it. There are excellent small local places up in San Jose for sushi but I always find it interesting because most of the sushi places here seem to be run by a mix of different asian ethnicities. I've rarely found a place that is solely owned and run by people from Japan. There are a lot of excellent Korean chefs running some of the sushi places. Not that it matters but just an interesting observation.

I'm not sure why, but here in Baltimore and the suburbs we have quite a few decent sushi places. In fact in Towson, this is in Baltimore County, there are I think 5 places that do sushi all within a 2 block radius, it's actually kind of ridiculous.

I remember the first time I had sushi, this was when I was probably 14 or even younger, visiting my aunt in Boston. She had been to Japan and probably is a big influence on my being a bit of a Japanophile. I just remember thinking "this is IT!" The hot towels were awesome (too bad a lot of places don't do that.) And now, well, sushi places are a dime a dozen, around here at least. Which I won't ever complain about!

I cant speak for SF but Sticky rice in richmond va is my favorite punk-rock-sushi-bar-where-you-can-order-tater-tots-by-the-bucket. BELIEVE IT!

Nope full on japanese. With all the cliches for their sushi chefs, punk rock kid, old wise one, drunk guy, old perv and even a pirate who runs drinks and whatever to tables, most of his teeth are gold or silver. All of them speak japanese fluently english is the second language. The food is nothing short of amazing.

Sushi Sam's in San Mateo... horrible name, great sushi.

Have you been to TGI Sushi on Hamilton Ave? - Very small Sushi restaurant that is always packed but incredibly tasty sushi

I like Sushi Deli in Hillcrest (SD). Its certainly not the best quality or authenticity but its much better than average for around here and its cheap!

A few places that I like are:
- Yuki Sushi (near Valley Fair)
- Sushi O Sushi (on El Camino, check out 99 Chicken a few doors down, best fried chicken ever!)
- Ryoko's (in SF, small hole in the wall joint underground, has an awesome vibe and the best hotate sashimi)

I like Sushi but prefer Sashimi. Where im living at the moment we are a long way from the coast. Not the freshest seafood. Can't wait for to crazy in Japan.

Sushi Sam's in San Mateo is classic...

Seto (run by Japanese) in Sunnyvale is very good....
