I saw those also, and was like WTF. I guess its good for them but now we're going have to deal with all these MTV jack-holes at their shows, if they play anymore...
Runs to break out Rock for Light on milk white vinyl....
I don't want to say they were one of the best, but Underdog is great....

I don't think they've been "underground" in quite awhile. I all the old punk bands like Bad Brains have been co-opted and sold over the counter at your virgin megastores and your CVS Pharmacies for quite awhile. Being a 15 year old listening to bad brains when they were new is quite different than listening to them as a 15 year old now. I think these bands have been entered in the the boring rock canon and are regarded with the same weight as your aerosmiths and pearl jams (shudder!)

I saw Bad Brains back in 1988 (or was it 1989?) and it was truly amazing! Music was tight and HR's vocals were nuts! Also, HR was killing people doing dives and backflips.
BUT...
I saw Bad Brains again this past summer and they were HORRIBLE live. The music was still tight, but HR just stood there centerstage, wearing a bigass parka and his hands in his pockets, half-heartedly singing the songs and rambling on and on between songs. It was so bad that people were booing by the end of the set.
----------------
My picks
BEST HARDCORE BAND: Agnostic Front (if you ignore everything after the 'One Voice' LP) and Sick Of it All (if you ignore everything after the 'Scratch The Surface' LP).
BEST EDGE BAND: 7 Seconds or Minor Threat

i'll chime in here...
i saw the bad brains with israel singing... i think he was on the rise album. it was great just to hear the songs and sing a long. i didnt care who was singing. with that said, he was actually really good. and then i saw them a couple february's ago at cb's with leeway opening. john josephs from the cro mags sang for the bad brains that night, and although the music was awesome and tight, jj just couldnt hang. i dont think he knew half the words and it was just sad.
ok... best HC band of all time? it's hard to argue with the Bad Brains so i wont.
best sxe band? im going to go with a band that is still sxe... earth crisis. there are a lot of other bands that i liked that were sxe, but most have sold out.

I saw Bad Brains about 5 or 6 years ago.. it was whenever they first regrouped. It was kinda nutz.. not good nutz.. hr was pretending he had a baby in his arms the whole time, and they had to play sloooowwww so he could keep up.
Since then, I've heard the stories about his vicious homophobia that make me cringe.
Fav hardcore... hard to say.. also depends on how loose you wanna go on hardcore.
The first DRI ep is crazy! Kinda a thrashy proto-powerviolence thing.. to bad for the later albums.
Mid-90's toughguy straightedge would have to be Integrity.

hr has always been off his nut....
i have seen them twice,,first on the "i against i" tour (1986??) in nyc at ritzy hotel (now webster hall)..the best large punk gig i have ever seen...insane energy from the band & crowd...
and just this past october in london,,my expectations were real low,,and musically they really surprised me,,kept it tight,,but the tempos were slowed WAY down (even on "pay to cum")...hr was in robe & sunglasses the whole time,,standing still in praying pose..
you have to give them the benefit of the doubt that they are a bit old now...
for sXe bands,,i would have to say the originals,,7seconds or uniform choice...i would say minor threat (but they were not complete sXe,,only ian,,brian definitely was not sXe)

were integrity ever labeled sxe? i'm pretty sure it was a minor threat type situation where it may have been the case for the whole band only for a short time.

Ya, your probably right. They did drop the straight edge tag when Dwid got more into the culty imagery. He was obsessed with that Process Church thing...

Favorite of all & still listen to often: SEPTIC DEATH
Favorite I actually got to see live: C.O.C
Technocracy
"This ecological atrocity finally
Caves in on itself...perhaps it's
All for the better
Lock your doors and say goodnight
As toxins leach out of sight
We're living in the new age
Of electronic security
Technocracy probable cause
Technocracy bending some laws
Living in fear making something
Of yourself is making fifty grand
A year
The technology that spawned
Our every convenience
Creating more and more poison
Pledge of toxic allegience
Technocracy probable cause
Technocracy bending laws
All American clones
On and on their sermon drones
Rabbit at your career
It goes on all around you
Part of this insanity
Working for the technocracy
Technocracy probable cause
Technocracy bending some laws
There are limits to
Growth on this planet but
There is no limit to your
Green or potential to
Exploit...the end of
Suffering or just an
Eternal scream"
