That's a great example of one man's junk....
Vintage collectors (Star Wars, Mego, etc) go gaga over this kind of piece. When I was big into vintage SW, there was a hardcore group of display collectors. Can't remember a piece ever going for that much, though...
Modern collectors could assemble a nice collection for that much scratch.

That tends to be the case, until someone sees an Ebay auction close for 2K and then says "Wait, I've got one of those in my cellar." Happened a lot in the SW world - I think mostly because the Net has made info and "finds" spread so fast - business at the speed of thought. (Ooh, a Bill Gates quote!)

I'll bet the monster box collecters board emptyboxbrain.org talks just as much shit on us.
"Wait a second...these people buy the same figures that arent even from a movie or comic book over and over again in different colors just to sell them a month later?!"
I'd love to meet the person who is drooling over that auction...

Damn. That's dedication. Hope it goes to a deserved collector.
You could corner the market with some good illustrator + photoshop skills to do a run of those things. Nothing like the original though!

THIS JUST AN AWESOME DISPLAY BOX THAT HAS BEEN KEPT IN GREAT CONDITION
I feel so much better for blowing my load on a recent show.
I can't wrap my mind around paying that amount of money for a box.
Then again, I was watching this dog show on Animal Planet.
They are SO INTO these dogs and presentation.
And the judges are always these grey haired ladies...
Oh well.
Trying not to judge. Each to his/her own.

I actually REALLY love displays. it's great when you have some really nice toys and then the display to go with them.
I mean, they are often more rare than the toys themselves. sure, lots of kids buy the toys and play with them/beat them up, but there are still always examples in good condition and very often still boxed/brand new pieces.
but store displays? I mean, when the store was done with it - throw it out. what do they care? no one thought this stuff would be collectible.
the same seller has some prototype Megos up too, that they apparently got from a guy who worked for Mego.

also, when it comes to monster toys, the box/display artwork is always so cool and often revered as much as the toys themselves, so I can totally understand why this auction is so high.
those Mego boxes kill it

I mean, in all honesty, I've seen newer vinyl toys, handpaints or one offs, go for close to or over that price, and in my opinion that's not worth it, whereas something like this would be.
I know it's just a box, but it's from over 30 years ago and in great condition and you just don't see them around like that. some guy that has all 4 megos in really nice boxes is going to buy this and just have the ultimate boner-inducing collection that will destroy all others.

I work with a woman who basically collects stones. Yeah the stones are from places that she visited and signify memories. But in the end stones or rocks.
It's so cool that she is into a hobby of collecting that is basically free except for lugging them back.
She stops by my desk and sees the toys that show up in the mail at work.
And shakes her head in disbelief. Whatever.
Takes all types.
Chase or collect what you desire.

I seriously love collectors of all types. well I shouldn't say all, there are some who get under my skin depending on their antics and the culture surrounding what it is in particular they collect, but for the most part I'm just all for anyone that is super passionate and dedicated to something like that.
without a doubt it makes them about a thousand times more interesting than most other people - a special breed if you will.
in the words of one Isaac Ramos, it shows they have a "zest for life"
keep on collecting, die hards everywhere

Wacky Packages go for big money too sometimes. This group of 101 stickers went for over $3000.

Boxes and wrappers sell for $$$ as well. For example:

Its live but hopefully noone here had their eye on it.

I haven't thought about Wacky Packages in ummmm.......years.
My entire dresser was covered with those stickers. I wonder how much that would be worth?

Were they in good shape or peeled and stuck on the desk?
The 16th series and some others are worth big money (in solid condition).
Some other cards were considered offensive and or provoked legal threats and then removed from circulation so they're extra rare and valuable. The posters (of the cards) and boxes for the posters are also sometimes worth a lot too.
Anyone not familiar with these things might want to check them out on Ebay, they were really warped and a lot of fun some of the art's really interesting as well.
The empty boxes and empty wrapper prices seem the most absurd to me because they're really just empty boxes and empty wrappers.

haha actually I hate them and am working on a new arrangement.
that said, for the time being they are serving their purpose in the space that is available.

The 16th series of Wacky Packages was released in a fairly small run and was the last official series for years, those are supposedly really rare.
The 15th series is expensive too but nowhere near the 16th, think the brand was petering out (it got brought back later).
Boxes and wrappers are sometimes inexplicably expensive. The $7000 box is from the posters which were just large size reproductions of the cards (but rare).
I don't collect these but they bring back fond memories so I sometimes watch the auctions. Its wierd seeing an empty wrapper or box sell for a small fortune.
