I've heard about this. It's sort of like a quasi-MMO, isn't it? What I remember is that your 'planet' exists in the multiplayer universe with other players' planets, but if you destroy their planet, it doesn't actually affect their instance of the game.
Anyhow my brother will be excited, I'm sure.

It is MMO in the sense that you play on-line and you can decide if you want to destroy your neighbor or make friends with them. One of the more interesting parts of the game is that you decide what kind of body parts your organism gets and where they go.
Here's a clip of someone making a creature:

Finally! I was worried that this thing would be outdated by the time it was released, but it still seems to be fairly unique. Brian Eno did the music, is that right? Farewell Sim City. Hello Sim Universe!

From what I've heard, there aren't many bugs when this is released...but I wouldn't count on it being bug free. Dev did a lot of tuning over the past year so the game is pretty much done.

The Long Now Foundation hosted an interview with Wright and Eno last year at which they demo'd the game. It looks like a blast. The demo isn't the completed edition of course, but you can get an idea of what gameplay will be like: VIDEO
