I think the problem is with people who DEFINE themselves this way. Same with people who DEFINE their life with drinking/drugs/etc. When people define themselves with these things is when they get weird and depressing.

I'm a social drinker (maybe once a week, on the weekend), and then it's not for the buzz, but I really like the various tastes of beers. I see it as a complement to my life. That said, while I do eat meat, I've made a much more concerted effort to eat far less processed food. And I don't smoke. And no drugs.

Rog: You're a smoker? Never knew...

HMS: the tofu is all good, but c'mon...you also eat...soygurt?!
kidding...

sxe here in orange county were mainly kids who fought, got tats, had neatly styled hair, plugs and were the metrosexuals before we had them. They formed crews like Lords of South County out of dana point and lots of them still fight in UFC stuff such as a friend of mines older brother Emerson who was on UFC's ultimate fighter. Basically if you are edge you will deal with a lot less shit in life, such as cops and legal trouble and if you ever get in a fight you don't have to worry about getting beat up due to being to wasted.

It really isn't a big deal if you are edge or not, like someone said an asshole is an asshole, for instance HMS is edge and I am not, many would consider either one of us assholes on here. Personally even though I drink I have seen enough people that act like idiots when they do that I could totally see why someone would not want to associate themselves with that crowd.

For further help identifying edgers that will fight you here is a visual aid, watch out for groups of them and hope you are somewhat sober. Even though they eat more chick food than your ex girlfriend a lot of them can fight pretty well

Wow, did I post on this thread? I must have been wasted. ;p

Never been a smoker, and had probably ten cups of coffee in my life (just don't like the taste). I've never been crazy with the drinking and the drugging, my vice has always been food.

i think there may be a misconception that people who drink (or use illegal drugs for that matter) do so because they depend on them for a good time, or do it to cope with lifes struggles. while that is certainly true for a lot of people, i think its worth mentioning that this is not always the case, and some folks just enjoy having a couple beers (or whatever) here and there. its not always about escaping or retreating.

all that said, i have nothing but respect for each persons right to make their own decisions for any reason, and hope they respect mine as well.

Very well said Josh. I've done every substance known to mankind but never have been addicted to anything. I've never 'needed' anything to have fun. I've always been pro-experimentation-anti-addiction. As I get older though certain things lose their appeal. I'm lucky nowadays if I have one drink a week, then again I don't go out much because that too also lost it's appeal. I think going out is a seasonal thing for me and winter makes me stay in. Anyhow I respect anyone's own belief system whether it be straight edge (a have one or two friends that are) or social user. It's the abusers or close minded at either end of the spectrum that annoy me.

i must have been hanging out with the wrong crowds in high school and college.

I never once met anyone that was straight edge. Up until a couple of months ago, i didn't even know what this was.

Word! I often contemplate picking one up from a thrift store and switching the letter on the front to an X. Usually, though, they have something ridiculous like 'Lil Crazy' embroidered on the back.

I would like to add the description to the straightedge warrior:::

he doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, and premarital sex? well, maybe. unlike his nerdy scenester counterparts, this guy takes care of himself. his daily exercise routine consists of 50 roundhouse kicks, performing windmills until his shoulders give out, and at least 10 minutes of mock stage dives into his parents pool.

he's from a rare breed of the hardcore fan; very few exist past the age of 21. due to their adolescent abstinence, guys like this often lose all signs of their former "posi" attitude and become raging alcholics. awkward doesn't even begin to explain how difficult it is to explain "edge" tattoos to chicks at the bar.
if you want to contact him for crucial mosh tips, don't hesitate to IM him at xedgextilxdeathx

unless you grew up or were involved with hardcore/punk somehow, realistically you wouldn't really have any idea or understanding about it.

your choice of the word "user" displays some amount of negative bias. just as "non-user" implies positivity. the morality of '80s after school specials has infiltrated your mind! :D

I work in Public Service Announcements when my job tells me do less evil work. so I'm sensitive to labelization and the imminentization of a "don't drink, don't smoke. what do you do?" cultural backlash. I fear it more than the possiblity of one day being taken to court for being in violation of "grandparents rights to visitation".
those are two fun sentences I wrote while high. your turn soberstuff...

I actually didn't particularly care for my choice of words there either, but I didn't know what else to say. plus I was posting this and missy was all ready to go out the door with her coat on and everything thing and started nagging me so I had to wrap it up - no time to edit.

I don't hold anything against anyone who drinks or anything like that. I know plenty of social drinkers who appreciate the taste and can handle themselves quite responsibly. I don't even care if people want to get drunk from time to time. I just wouldn't want to (and don't) associate myself with those that feel it's necessary to have a good time.

as Josh pointed out, and my intent wasn't to make any generalizations either way, that their are plenty of casual drinkers that know how to have a great time with or without. just like there are straightedge kids that are boring and lame.

the only point I was really trying to make is that many straightedge kids (at least others that I've known) are fucking lunatics and sometime the thought of them on some substance that might further alter their already crazy ass minds is quite scary.

any self respecting straight edge kid would never do a windmill or roundhouse kick.
wait unless its 1994.

I will tell everybody about one of the worst things that happens. maybe only the people in said subculture can understand. I cant stand the 30 year old who just broke his edge. He usually turns into a 16 year old. he cant handle his alcohol and turns into a wreck. i feel this happens 75% of the time. Or the one who feels super guilty and wont talk to you even though you have zero problem with what he/she has done.
its lol fest

If youre going to break your edge. do it at 21 and spare your friends the embarrassment.

Straight edge til Coll-edge.

this thread is fascinating to me just because it reinforces
how many different things we all get out of these toys and this hobby.
i know a big part of the allure to me of monsters is
how radd and heady and psychedelic they all are.
i'm guessing "psychedelic" isn't an attribute that draws
many edgers into enjoying monster toys.
