Good points. I'm more disappointed that WATCHMAN is getting the movie treatment. I think that's equally bad.

"Akira" originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo."

WRONG try '82

Who the fuck wrote this?

Fuck this movie. You take away Neo Tokyo and the film loses all meaning. The socio-political implications, the imagery of the nuclear attack. Why would you call a white guy Kaneda, or Akira? The movie has been made. It is perfect.

Eh, they couldn't even get the right pic in there...I'm not terribly shocked they got the manga release date wrong.

New Manhattan? WTF?!?!?!?! That is so whack. Peter Jackson is doing the live action Neon Genesis Evangelion, between that and now this, it seems like a lot of anime is going to get remade as western suckage. I'm sure the fx will be cool, and that's about it.

One sci-fi comic I really like the movie remake of is Immortal, which is a movie version of Enki Bilal's awesome comic The Nikopol Trilogy. It's similar in ways to the FIfth Element, which itself borrowed a lot of imagery and feeling from Bilal, & Moebius of course, and a few others from the French school of sick-ass sci-fi comics.

A live action Gundam movie might be OK, if it didn't end up like Robot Jox. Uhg, heheheh....

That's funny you bring up Moebius, who Otomo sights as a lot of the influence for the art of Akira.

Immortal is a wild looking film. Love the blue chick, and the anubis.

i tend to agree with the distaste of westernized asian cinema as a whole even the good stuff is too commercialized with "star actors" which reflects on the stranglehold of the film industry to market rather than create.

However anime in particular doesn't always translate well to live action in Japan either.. Devilman comes to mind from a few years back, really a let down in my opinion. Imagine if Shinya Tsukamoto would have made it.

Too true. Casshern/Casshan LA was pretty terrible, and LA Tetsujin 28 was boring. Hell, even previously LA stuff redone, like Kamen Rider the First, was garbage.

For manga to film, you gotta love The Story of Ricky, though. That HK flick is fucking hilarious.

I agree with all this. First off, that new Kamen Rider movie the first sucked ass. I have to say that the costume design and everything was cool but it was a very long and boring story. I'm wondering what the next new V3 movie will be like. Like the first, the costumes are cool. But the story will have to make it balance.

LA Evangelion???!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....not another great anime made into LA film..........I'm sure the CG will be cool...but man....this really sucks.

Also, I'm not trying to be racist, but seeing another race being a japanese character just blows me off......I grew up watching Japanese anime instead of american cartoons, so everytime I see a anime dubbed in english, well it just sucks. The voice doesn't really go with the image of the character, and the lines, oh man, just shoot me.....

Not racist at all. I HATE when movie companies change race or what ever to fit the role they feel is better selling. I also hate when movies are dubbed in English if they are another language. Movies would be better if companies stuck to what was the original design. Its what we all fell in love with and should as least have some consistency to lure us back. Not that fact that its now LA

For SURE! When movies are based on comics/shows they should be on auto-pilot, they have amazing stories already to go. Why muck it up? For some stupid test audience? Where do they find these test audiences anyway?

Dude, half the japanese characters in anime have blonde hair and big round blue eyes. what's up with that? then there will be a couple characters that look more "japanese" to balance it out. I agree about dubbing; it just shouldn't happen. subtitles only.

Robot Jox? That movie KICKS ASS. yeah its bad and dumb, but thats why it rules.

I know 2 people who think Akira was ruined by the anime and should have been left at the manga level.

I personally love the Original English dub. Although not exactly correct with translation. It has alot of soul that the new dub is missing. Ive been waiting for another release of the dvd that will include the OG dub since at the moment you can only find it on the UK version.

The characters with those features are, what I think, is characterized as a person from another region. for instance, in AkIRA the characters were all pretty much black/brown hair with brown eyes, because the setting was in Japan, as of Dragon Ball, the setting was all over the planet + outer space. The new ones, which I don't watch much anymore, is pretty much going with the latest trends in reality. Dyed hair and so on. But if you watch and find out where the setting is and where the character is from, then there will be different looks.
I'm just saying, I think it messes the original look of the classic manga or anime if let's say USA makes it. look what they did with Godzilla and even Street Fighter. thats all I'm saying. Keep the classics original and not tweek it to get more audience.

This will be total crap.
I saw somewhere that there is supposed to be a westernized cgi astro boy movie coming out soon too. i guess hollywood get tired of ruining American comics with shitty movies so now they're moving out to Japanese ones.

Was the original the double vhs pack with the 'Making Of' tape? I had big problems with Kaneda being voiced by the same guy who did Leonardo, the ninja turtle. It's got to be dubbed for me.

OK This is true, the original English dub was OK, I mean it had Raphael from TMNT's voice as Kaneda, that was cool! The new ENglish dub is blech. Me, I'm a subtitle/Japanese guy myself.
