Maybe I'm giving too much credit to this board that we can discuss toys without getting personal or into arguments and have threads de-generate??? I hope not.

Nah, please keep giving that credit to the board. Those who "act out" are a minority. There are plenty of us who can handle diversity of opinion and taste without acting like someone just insulted our mothers.

I hereby nominate you for over-exaggeration of the year. I'm routin' for ya!

Jacranky, you're not out of line, it's just these discussions are bound to be view as negative by some as not everyone is receptive about things they love. Keep airing your opinions, but you'll have to expect so flak from the enthusiasts as well haha :D

jacranky - I'm disagreeing with you, not getting personal. Pretty huge difference.

You brought something up and a lot of people disagreed. Just gotta roll with it - no big deal.

Oh, I want people to state their opinions about these figures. If you look at my initial post, I'm asking for people's thoughts.

I hear ya! I'm asking for people's thoughts on these because I KNOW some will differ from mine.... and hearing other people's thoughts may bring new thoughts of my own on these figures.....that's what discussion is all about.

Excuse me? I was offering support for frank and open discussion. I wasn't describing you, in fact, I was thinking more of what was said about criticism of Secret Base.

Dude, you clearly think of yourself as Official Number One Cronic Fan, and I'm sure we can all appreciate your Cronic love and the information you share, but your arrogance or at least appearance of arrogance is quite obnoxious.

lol at the extreme over-defensiveness in this thread!

i think some good points were made here...

maybe 'cronic falling off' isn't the best thread name, but its hard to deny that zyurai, baku, and the mav still reign supreme over the new sculpts.

and as far as the rxh that was mentioned,
i think a lot of collectors will agree that the same can be said... none of the new sculpts can really f with the amazingness that is evil, head, and chaos imo.

i believe a good deal of gargamel releases are still painted by kiyoka, who is the sculptor and one of the designers of their figures. Kiyoka also 'hand sprays' every visighost, which he also sculpted.

hiro would be better able to confirm this than me, but i *think* mori still paints some runs of his figures himself as well. i dont know about any other current japanese vinyl companies, but i think ive seen some photos of yuji from m1 painting his figures too. those could have been him painting a master, though.

the distinction between "hand painted" and "factory painted" is one that has been discussed a fair amount here, but in my opinion is still a little confusing.

the term 'hand painted' implies a lone creator lovingly applying paint to each figure, and suggests a higher level of craftsmanship. 'factory painted' tends to imply an impersonal cookie cutter application of paint to a piece of plastic by a robot, and suggests a lower level of craftsmanship.

i think the truth is that very few if any of the toys discussed here are not painted carefully by human hands. some of them are hand painted by a skilled craftsman that youve heard of, some of them are painted by a skilled craftsman that you havent. i think the distinction really only matters when the figure is something extra-special like a pinstriped toy, or a one-off, or something very very intricate.

as for having a thread to discuss the pros and cons of cronic, i think it would be great if we could have thoughtful discussions like this on all the brands spotlighted here, and in fact these conversations do happen. but with something like RxH, a thread about not feeling new sculpt 'x' tends to get buried under the volume of other threads on release info, praise, etc.

andy wrote:
Sanjeev, that's right they're mostly "hand sprayed" although Cronic also has toys that are brushed or "hand painted."

Naoki, to my knowledge, is the only "major" pachi kaiju designer who still paints everything himself. Other companies either have in house teams or send the work out to individual painters or firms, which are usually called "factories."

And in my mind, yes, it does make a difference that that the figures are painted by the original designer. That may not matter to other people, but it does to me.
