up on a german auction site, have to put a bid on these.
love the colors & vintage but still in great condition.
maybe im wrong, but guess german maker vitra that owns european license for eames
furniture stopped doing em out of fiberglass around 20 to 30 years ago.
anyone know when miller stopped doing the fiberglass ones?
what would be a realistic price in the u.s.?
thanks!!!

All i know is that the reason why they stopped producing fiberglass is because of the toxic fumes.

I would say plastic is a pretty new technology---I'm guessing around mid 70's to late 80's?

I may be wrong but these appear to be the 1948 originals. I have no idea when they stopped using fiberglass-reinforced plastic. The current designs appear to have been launched in 2005 and are said to be much more comfortable and certainly more durable. It's a lot easier to find origin dates than discontinuation dates. The Herman Miller site used to have complex timelines for all product histories but don't appear to any more. I have no idea about current market value but if these are indeed originals it's likely to be very high, almost prohibitively so if the chairs are in good condition (and aren't knockoffs.)

I'm not totally up on this subject, but are the fiberglass chairs Modernica currently makes different than this? They don't use the Eames name on their website, but that may be a licensing issue. They say they mostly use the original (1950's) equipment to make their chairs.

From my knowledge, Modernica bought the original machines from HM after they stopped using fiberglass.

I have one of the Modernica chairs and I think they look a lot better than the new plastic Herman Miller ones. I like the look of all the fibers, gives it texture.
