What do people say when they see your collection?
Curious Skullbrainers, what does the average person say when they come into your home/apt and see your collection of kaiju/toys? I've had anything ranging from "You should sell all this crap and use the money to move or something", to "Oh wow these are so cool where did you get them?" to "These are going to give me nightmares tonight- THANKS!" followed by people taking pictures of them at a house party. Just curious about any other weird stories of amazement/ and or ridicule. Discuss...

most people don't see mine because it is upstairs in our townhouse where guests usually don't go. sometimes my fiancee will show her girlfriends and they always say coooool
but i think they are secretly rolling their eyes
with my collection here at work... people usually just pick one out and ask what the story is. then i sound like a complete geek when i explain it.
a girl in my department asked what a dokuroman was when it was sitting on my desk. when i explained bootleggy vinyl of an old plastic toy from japan i could tell my cool points with her went way down hahaha

Oh man I HATE explaining the stories behind toys sometimes. I usually dumb it down and say catch words like Godzilla/Ultraman and people of certain ages get it. Those same people sometimes ask me why I don't have a Godzilla or Ultraman in the detolfs and I feel stupid. Then again sometimes people ask, don't get it all, and when you start talking you can see their minds wandering away...so for the most part I just don't bother anymore. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

Ha!! This was something I wanted to ask but you beat me to it.
Not sure why but most if not all say that it's kind of creepy or they don't even bother looking at them... I mean I have Bemons, Garg, RxH and GID Kaiju... my wife and I find them adorable and can't see how they would kill...I find it really bizarre reaction

People seem to ask how much it all cost alot.
I think for the most part, no matter what we say, we are bound to sound like geeks, and they are bound to roll thier eyes.
My one pet peeve is when people take ones that are out and start swing their arms about or what not, then look at me odd when I start looking nervous.

haha something like that happened here. i had a full size galtan that the guy across the hall was messing with. he asked about my hobby in general then asked how much galtan costs. when i told him around 90 bucks, his eyes opened wide and he put it down gently
so i guess i can add a little shame in my feelings there too

these kids at my werk always ask did you get any new blobpus monsters this week
i cant stand when people pick up my figures and then try to put them back the way they where but fail miserably (i get kind anal about how there placed) for the most part now every body knows how much i spend for these things and there reaction is usually something like are you going sell this stuff and buy a house or it just a piece of plastic how can it be werth so much
to others who are like im going steal this and put it on the bay or go flip it on your message board
but other than that most people like my hobby( i doubt any of them are crazy enough to persue it though i have gotten one of my friends hooked on western vinyl and prints) and one last thing most of them are like what happen to your [expletive deleted] i liked those the best

LOL! It's funny to see so many similar reactions from people. I always get the "Are you going to sell these off and buy [fill in blank here]..." I think one main reason I bought a detolf is to prevent people from touching them. In fact I know it's the main reason. My g/f likes to play a game with me and is constantly sneaking some small western toy somewhere on the shelves to see if I notice. Also my roomate DJ's and usually has people over here late long after I've passed out, so at least the detolfs say loud and clear "don't open these'. I think we're all doomed to have that 40 year old virgin moment with our toys.

Depending on whether or not I choose to tell them what a particular toy actually cost me, it's either "you're an idiot" or just "oh...".
My wife thinks they're cute... so long as they're Booska.
Pffft. Some friends I have.

It never fails when a person who has never seen my stuff comes in they immdeiatly grab my brown Bigfoot off of the top of my display. I always cringe and smile like "No it is cool if you touch them." Then they ask and I start to tell and trail off when they show zero interest. Some people are really into them though and want to know as much as I can tell them.

Honestly most of my friends have pretty sizeable collections, so it's rarely a big deal.
When it is a first timer, I play all cool and try to cut off any questions. I say stuff like, "What you don't have any toys, what the fuck? Did your parents not love you? Were you left on the doorstep of your work at the age of 25 wearing a tie or something?" Shit like that.
Most of the time they get that I dig it and it's just fun. They pick up that it's ok to have fun around the toys. I think most people are intimidated by things that are different and that's when you get the "grow up", or "this is silly" talk. But, I could be wrong.

this is an interesting thread.....
I don't have any pre-skullbrain friends that collect, but when they come over and they see all this shit, they look at me like i'm crazy. My cousin said: "this is obsessive...." then i have friends that say "so......is this for investment purposes?......what's the end game here? I don't get it...."
I have to admit that when I was touring my cousin and her husband around here recently, I did kinda step back and think to myself yeah, this IS kinda nuts....what am I doing? It was a fleeting moment, and I snapped back into the warm and fuzzy embrace of my toys...

People are usually too shocked from seeing my freezer full of severed human heads to comment on the toys.

LOL. When I started collecting 1/6th scale military figures some years back, I had folks who come by and get reactions that read "how weird" to how cool". Mostly "how weird". When I started working as a designer doing these 6th scale figures I added that bit of information when people see my collection and the difference is stark. Now it's legit and It makes sense why I have so many behind glass cases.
The same exact thing happened when I started collecting vinyl. People are soo funny I tell ya.

The ironic thing I've observed when people come over is that people who aren't collectors are more likely to pick up and play with the toys than people who are.

everytime one of my friends stops by he makes it a point to see how much the collection has grown and always says "jesus christ, what the hell is wrong with you"... he also starts questioning me why I have stuff shipped from japan to his work and not mine sometimes
usually i'm a bit shy to show my collection. mainly because i have to explain that i fund it with the prostitution ring i run

I bet your inbox was flooded with angry PMs from all the kaiju-collecting prostitutes!
