i just got back from a week long trip through here...

I've hitched or driven what sometimes seems like every single road east of the Mississippi, but my only real experience west of Big Muddy is of SF and the Redwood Empire to the north, LA, and those long-ago adrenaline-fuelled clandestine supply runs to Austin, with the long hair tucked firmly up under a cap. The rest of it is truly just 'flyover' to me - One of these days, I would love to do some wandering out West.
