Nile is a respectable choice.

honorable mentions:
Hate Eternal... the new album rages. pure and simple.
Behemoth... one of the best live bands ever
Insect Warfare... part grind. part death metal. all awesome.
Anaal Nathrak... are they death metal? black metal? who cares.. they are intense.

..that is sounded like shite. At least panzerfaust had a bit more depth to it, and that was done on a 4 track!

Deathspell Omega and Vlad Tepes I think deserve honorable mentions too. oh, and VON.

Lets not forget Sodom either!

ah yes, 'kvlt' with a V, can't get much more grim than that.

I always figured that the majority of the BM bands just played that off as deliberate, moreso than the fact they could'nt afford proper recordings.

Whats your take on Emperor's 'Nightside' album? I thought they peaked on that, as the stuff afterward sucked.

C'mon, Mayhem's Deathcrush should get an honorable mention just for batshit insane satanic band member murdering church burning nuttyness. Wouldn't call it DM myself (I'd really call it a pile of dung), but the band members (remaining ones) refer to it as DM.

I'm not a big fan of the more symphonic stuff. that is definitely the last decent Emperor record though

and Mayhem is definitely black metal, not death metal

more spaz/grindcore but happy today with the as yet unreleased
BEAK - "Mucus Infect" EP & again not really deathmetal but
anything by the defunct Japanese band NECROPHILE,
NAPLAM DEATH, SOB or BATHTUBSHITTER usually
melts my earwax just the same.

Yesm. It was a photo taken by Euronymous, who obviously 'posed' the body somewhat too. Dead slashed his wrists before shooting himself, yet the knife is lying on top of the gun....

well, Euronymous did

I actually really hate how all this hoopla around these few bands/events years ago is all that anyone still really knows or talks about when it comes to black metal

it has come a long, awesome way since then and there are so many great bands but any time black metal is in the media it's like "these crazy fuckers kill each other and burn churches!"

I do that every weekend and no one gives a fuck

The OT media hype surrounding the events of 93 didn't help though, and secured the legacy of black metal with those events. I still have the copy of Kkerrang! that has the burning church on the cover and the sensationalist articles about Norwegian BM and the supposed 'inner circle', and its absolutely ridiculous. The book 'Lords of Chaos' really didn't help either, although it is an interesting read. That aspect will never go away, unfortunately, but yes, there are plenty of very very good bands that have come from the BM scene that are a million miles away from all that hype. I am glad that the USBM scene has produced some quality acts too.
