Hey folks...

I've been thinking it would be interesting if people talked a little bit about their guilty pleasures in toys collecting that aren't normally spoken about here. I know there are many peeps here who stick to Kaiju and Kaiju only, but I unfortunately still stalk the toy aisles at Target and such and buy other things here or there...so I'll start...

I still buy:

-Star Wars figs...the new releases are amazing. Just take a look at the new 2-1B and tell me they aren't putting out great stuff. And the McQuarrie figures from last year rawked. period.

-Matchbox Cars..this actually only started about a year and a half ago when my nephew was born when I decided to stockpile them for him...but when I realized how cool many of these are (especially all the construction/city type cehicles) I have been buying them up like crazy. Some Hot Wheels too, but i can't resist the $1.00 Matchbox goodness...

-Playmobil. enuff said. I bought the Nativity scene to help decorate my place for Christmas, despite being a die-hard agnostic...and buy single figures when I see one I like...

so, don't leave me hanging out here alone folks...I know you still have some despicable things you collect...what are they? let's all help each other through this...

i'm don't feel guilty for the other things i collect.

I used to collect a lot of the 1:24 Bigtime Muscle models from Jada.

i have a few of those magazines around. i used to TRY and draw car-toons, even had some commissions, (a mustang board uses my work as thread buttons lol), wish i could get back on that horse and really go at it.

funny thing about the title of this thread is that all of the things i listed are actually in my closet

I indulge in vintage figures here and there. Mostly from the eighties like toxic avenger figures, or whatever I find at Amok Time and Land of Oohs and Ahs. Even 5 and dime store toys or drugstore Halloween toys that are well done. Some Disney stuff also. Damn.... I think I could keep going on and on. It gets exponentially worse when you have child who's very into toys also. I think I have a young collector in the making.

Vintage Star Wars Figures and I have been getting into the original He-Man figures lately too, they really bring me back to the excitement of getting these characters the 1st time around as a kid.

I buy Transformers. My favorites are the ridiculously garish versions released in the early 90s when robots in disguise suddenly became violent shades of neon.

I, too, have called the toy department of a Wal-mart, have stalked the aisles of a Target and have waited patiently outside of a TRU for the hour of opening.

LoL - I used to wait at the wal-mart untill the pallets were unloaded and I could snag and open a new case of SW toys. nothing like the chase...

I recently bought Gary Panter's "Jimbo" figure. I've been a fan of his art since the late 1970s, when he was still doing art for musicians like Zappa and The Residents. In the early 80s he was well known especially for his Jimbo comics and also as the designer of Pee-Wee's Playhouse. I first learned of the figure from Isaac's RFSO site.

Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed with some aspects of the execution. The vinyl feels more like cheap plastic. The figure doesn't stand well without the stand that's included, and even then, it leans too far forward. This should have been obvious and corrected prior to production time. The loincloth thingie is held on to the figure by a cheap rubber band. I guess that fits the punk spirit but ... c'mon.

Good points are that the coloring is really cool, and the sculpt very good aside from the stance issue. The colorway was inspired by a Hedorah toy in Panter's collection. A photo of the toy is included in the excellent "making of" booklet that comes with the figure. In fact the book may be the best part of the product. Very honest play-by-play of how the thing was created in collaboration with the sculptor. The colors, despite being inspired by kaiju, are vintage 1980s New Wave ... clashing pink and cyan. I guess the thing looks cool in the closet shelf where it now resides alongside some GID toys and some bootlegs of a couple of Michael Lau figures, but it'd be out in the open if it would stand up correctly without that cheesy stand.

I don't collect much besides kaiju these days, although I still have some comics and science fiction magazines from when I was much younger. Complete first two years of Starlog, lots of original Star Wars promo material, lots of the original trading cards ... the ones my sister's kids didn't steal LOL.

Anyway, just thought I'd mention Jimbo as it was the only non-kaiju toy I've purchased in a long time. Well, besides random little Japanese blind box toys found at Heroes Club and Genki in SF. Some of them are pretty cool, especially the historic Samurai armor toys.

LEGO! I literally have tens of thousands of LEGO elements. The pisser is, I no longer have the time or the space to take it all out and build. Squished pennies, too. Whenver I am at a place that has one of those machines that flattens a penny and embosses a souvenir image on it, I have to get one. I also have a very unfocused art collection.

I can't let go of the stuff that I no longer actively collect, either. I still have coins, stamps, vintage Star Wars toys from my childhood, Aliens action figures, Micronauts (the few that I rescued before Mom threw them out), McFarlane fiugres, Starting Lineup figures, sports cards, autographed sports memorabilia, comic books, etc. Ummm... storage and display space is in short supply at my house.

toy wise i am and always will be addicted to old knockoff sci fi toys and old cheapo plastic halloween masks good thing is these are most times very inexpensive to aquire. other than that while definitely not toys & tho it creeps out most friends i show them to, i guess i get a guilty pleasure in that i collect antique medical stuff especially amputation saws.
