In my Psych class, the professor was telling us that Orlando has the highest per capita of registered sex offenders. I blame Disney!
897 Offenders

I'm just thinking out loud here so don't hate, but I wonder if this could be considered "cruel and unusual" in some cases. We don't know the nature of many of these crimes. The sex crimes in many states could be many things that fall in wide a spectrum of severity and contexts. For those of you that may flame me for this, I merely suggest a case of statutory rape between and nineteen year old and a seventeen year old could warrant this "sex crime" stigma, and be an act between consentual, all be it young, individuals. All of these people have obviously been convicted and presumably punished for their crime.

Other people have wondered the same thing. It was taken all the way to the Supreme Court, and they said it was okay:

No I was actually wondering that as well...or at least parts of it. I think the first thing that pops up when I hear the term sexual offender I think "rape" and "pedophile" But I wonder what all the circumstances are. I was watching that Dateline episode "TO Catch A Predator" and even though they didn't do anything..I think that those guys on their have to register. I guess...I would want to know more about how the info is defined.

Thanks for the links Roger.
The Supreme Court may be the ultimate judicial authority, but we can still consider their decisions unethical or wrong.

I have 2 things to add to this:
1. when I lived in northern VA. the county I lived in had their own registry. there was a guy who lived 4 blocks from me who was a sex offender. His crime: "crimes against animals". swear on my life.

2. A friend of mine when I was younger had to register. He was a registered offender because during an assembly at school he pulled down his pants and mooned some people. He got expelled and arrested for "exposing himself". Just an idea behind how many things get blanketed in this.

Nevermind. Found my own answer. You can click on any of those squares and a pop up comes up of the person, picture and states the offense. It's pretty crazy.

Looked at Tyson's file and under 'Markings' it says "No markings provided". WTF? He has a huge facial tatoo and if I remember correctly, he has a portrait of Mao on his arm or something.

ha, maybe it's a different dude, my bad

Actually, judging by that Cosby sweater and lack of tribal face tattoo in the pic, it must have been before he got the ink

Back when I was in college, an old friend of mine decided it would be a great idea to walk across the lawn of a house that a frat party was at and moon all the people outside. He was really drunk, we tried to talk him out of it, but he was pissed that they wouldn't let us in and he wanted to liven things up or something. So he dropped his drawls, and walked across the lawn. people were laughing, wooting, and omging, then the cops pulled right on up like clockwork. me and my friends were concerned at the time, but the next day we were laughing our asses off about how it happened. He'd call from jail and would hang up when he got the answering machine. we made jokes of some guy named "Bubba" hanging up the phone for him saying "time's up, honey". He had a court date, the cop never showed up to court, so I guess everything was dropped. If everything had gone as it should, he would've been labeled a sex offender, and would have had to go door to door in the neighborhood and tell everyone that he was a sex offender. He mooned some college kids at a lame party. sex offender? stupid, maybe. definitely funny.

I have a crazy neighbor, right next door, that once put up a big sign (4'x6', roughly) in his yard that read "Child Molester at #### Street"...I drove home from work to find this in his yard, and immediately got pissed because it was MY address that was on the sign! I confronted him about it, and he didn't realize that was the address of the house right next door to him (and he's lived there for years)---for some reason, he thought that it was further down the street...the cops showed up while I was pointing out the address clearly listed on my house, and made him take down the sign, which had been up for hours.

We live close to an elementary school, down the street from a University, and my wife teaches high school, so a notification to the neighborhood that a child molester lives at my house was far from cool...

This was a couple of years ago and it still makes me mad...

Child molesters are the worst kind of predators, in my book, and are most likely NOT "curable" of their urges...I'd much rather have drug users on the streets than child molesters...free the pot heads and lock up the pervs...

There should be two catagories:
1) Sex Offenders
2) Child Molesters

Sex offenders is a wide range from the rapist to the guy that gets caught touching himself in a xxx theatre (poor peewee). As well there should be a wide range of punishment.

Child molesters should be removed from existence.

His rape conviction occurred before he got the facial tattoo.

true. i am obvious ignorant to this fact in the US. i am just shocked though that there are so many of these people.... it's not as bad here in HK (I mean 500 offenders in your neighborhood!!!?? FAK)... most of my closest friends are also parents and they never really talk about that... it'll be interesting to see if it's high in the US compared to the rest of the world.
